in a nutshell: Xeon=Better. faster FSB [in some cases] larger L2 Cache [a big plus] Faster cores [sometimes] Server cores are built for massive beatings, Workstation cores are built to work with less overall access, however the ability to focus more power to where its needed [such as a CAD or other program, rather than more than one place at one time] anyone who's used a server and then a workstation would tell the difference.

Setup Tri Monitor on 1 PC using Virtualization
bonestonne replied to ideas's topic in Hardware Hangout
ok, i'll give you the best run through i know and can give, as i have to wait for a file to be saved to my external drive on my other rig. heres the basic run down: 1) install Linux. any build will do, however i recommend 7.04 [the newest release of Ubuntu. available at www.ubuntu.com] -reason for ubuntu, its the one i'm most familiar with, as well as being most popular distribution. if you want to dual boot its all possible. while installing you find this out. the CD you burn is both the install and live CD, so no worries, you'll understand that when you install it. 2) install VMWare. VMWare is a type of Virtual Machine. there are other ones available, however VMWare is the easiest that can be set up from what i've researched, and through the websites i've found. -you need to be connected to the internet for this, as when you go into the Synaptic Package Manager, you will search for VMWare, and the package needs to be downloaded from the internet. you don't need to worry about any repositories for this, whats installed first is everything you need. 3) you need a .vmx file. this is the virtual hard disk file for VMWare, and it allows you to install the OS of your choice on it. -to get one, i've found a website called www.easyvmx.com use that website to create your .vmx file, which will be downloaded as a .zip file. Linux has support allowing you to extract them right to the desktop, which makes it easiest. when starting VMWare, you get a box asking you to find a .vmx file, which you can, through the file you've extracted from the download from www.easyvmx.com -on www.easyvmx.com, you need to use the middle, or left side options, as they give you plenty of options. were it asks for a GB size, thats the size the virtual hard disk will be, you can make it up to 500gb, and as small as 500mb. 40GB is about average, and if you plan on emulating XP, Darwin and Vista, you'll want two 40GB ones, and a 60GB on for Vista. -theres a menu that asks how much memory to allocate it. it can be changed later, however both Darwin and XP should get about 256MB each, however with vista, you need no less than 512MB. 768 is a better number, and will give more room for Vista. 4) capture the VMWare image ASAP, and press F2, so you can get into the BIOS of it. there, you need to change the boot order so that CD comes before HDD, which will allow you to install it properly. if you don't press F2 fast enough, just hit Esc fast enough, and you will have a boot menu. from there, you should be able to do everything you need. now, i've never used Linux on multimonitor, so i'm not sure how easily that will go off. I've used Linux on a 64" TV, but not more than one screen. linux should be able to adapt to multiple monitors, however you'll want to experiment with that first. when it comes to Darwin, i'm unable to get my version working on my workstation, so i can try it on this box, but no promises. it didn't work on most computers, i'm just SOL, others get lucky. doesn't work here either, so oh well. with just what i've put in so far, this should be enough to get you started with XP/Vista -
Setup Tri Monitor on 1 PC using Virtualization
bonestonne replied to ideas's topic in Hardware Hangout
hmmm beat you to it almost? i only have a little over a gig of RAM, and i can emulate Vista Ultimate and XP at the same time, and i'm running Ubuntu Linux. As soon as i get Mac OSx86 [next marketpro visit] i'll throw that in the mix. Vista is terribly slow, however in XP i'm running my external hard drive, Adobe Audition 2.0, Office 2007, and Winamp. in vista, i have changed anything because i can barely get it to work [it took a good 5 minutes just for it to disable aero glass]. Use Linux, and VMWare. don't try to use windows and emulate linux, the default screen size for linux is 1600x1200px so don't think that'll fit anywhere easily. one tip that i have, is to not use different physical monitors, use the different workspaces in linux. it makes it that much easier. when i installed vista [and i do have an old computer, so it could just be for me] it had Aero Glass enabled first boot, so the thing was disgustingly slow. also, if you've got a dual core CPU, VMWare will only use one core, so make sure its quick. my machine has two processors, and each virtual machine only uses one processor. but that leaves plenty of room for linux to still work. if theres something specific you want to know, just ask, i can boot into the systems fairly quickly, and will be moving into a faster rig hopefully next week. [gig of DDR2, 3ghz dual core]. i wouldn't advise emulating vista though, it really does run like crap. i also have this old version of darwin from before the actual project was dropped because they didn't reach their goal in 6 months, if i can ever get it to work, i'll be sure to let you know. the darwin i have is on CD, not DVD, and is very different from OSx86. -
que? what was that again? 7600 is limited by a barton? again, what i said earlier, you may want to opt for the cheaper one. ...i almost love being the underdog sometimes...lets all beat on the kid and do research later.

Post Pictures and Specifications of your computer here!
bonestonne replied to ripken204's topic in Hardware Hangout
No pics yet, but my specs will be [as soon as the CPU comes] MSI P965 Neo-F Mobo Pentium D 925 [3.0Ghz] 1Gb DDR2 667Mhz G-Skill dual channel kit [2x 512mb] 250GB SATA WD drive LG CD-RW [52x32x52x] DVD drive [read only] Apevia X-Dreamer with Side window CPU hasn't arrived yet due to shipping f-up...the claim better fix it...there was a small price drop i took advantage of...price is now $86, it started at $100, dropped to $84 [when i went for it]. build will definately run Ubuntu SE, possible dual boot with Vista Ultimate, windows XP will be emulated in Linux, maybe a third boot on Mac OS-X. depends. -
7600, whichever model will be good for that. you'll have dual DVI out and TV out....which will be able to do just about anything you throw at it. i would probably go a little lower though, its an older system, and even if its for gaming, i wouldn't blow a fortune on it, because it wont be able to redeem its price. just one thing, don't be hatin' on the 5xxx series...i have an fx5200 PCI, and you'd be surprised how handy it can be.

sadly, i downloaded one thing legally, turns out its become illegal, so i guess that makes it illegal because i use it? bah. a single modified operating system. no music, no programs, and i don't game anyway. the company actually now distributes the modified OS, so i don't even know how to count it. it was illegal when i did it. havent made it completely work though. haven't gotten into a GUI with it, just command line stuff.

ok, when i get the money for something better, like an ultra 120 extreme or something, i'll come back to this...its a hell of a lot faster than anything i'm used to already, so i can't complain.
-
actually, it has 350W in it now, and all the voltage rails are dangerously low. i believe that he's going to aim for the Seasonic, however since he's out of town until tomorrow night, i dunno if he ordered it yet. i showed it to him and told him that its better than what he has..he didn't like the price tag (at 120 i wouldn't either) however he's not a computer buff, so he doesn't understand the importance of a quality PSU.

generally, i just want to pull the FSB up to 1066 so it can beat most C2D on the market. even with only 800mhz FSB, i know it will outperform basically the 4300, but i want it to be comparable to the E6600, and close to the 6700. i only have stock cooling for now though so it wont be intensive. this build is going with what i have, not what the best is.

a legal notice box itself, well, i don't think you could have a popup like windows has were you hit Control-Alt-Delete, get the message, then log on, but you can change the default screen from saying Welcome to something else. system>Administration>Login Window when you're in there, click on the "Local" tab. Instead of saying Welcome, then it will have what you type..i dunno if theres a character limit or anything, but thats the closest i think you'll get. i just finished installing + customizing 7.04, but i'm pretty sure its the same in 6.10, maybe in 5.10, but i haven't used that one in a long time [just got into linux myself, and i was up late exploring]

ok, enough of that $h17 keep your temper to yourself. is it possible to bump the FSB or is that a really bad idea? either way its the CPU i'm getting, i have the board and RAM, will test both this coming week...hopefully i'll get paid soon enough to get it by may 10th.

well, macs use airport, so i'm not sure how well it would go along using that with windows, however, if you network everything, it should be fine, meaning each computer linked to a shared files folder, etc and so forth, drag and drop on both computers... and if that doesnt work, a simple flash drive will.
-
my reasons for not using firefox 2 all summed up... i currently use 1.5.0.9 support has ended for it, but it runs very stably....and in classic look it matches everything else on my computer, while not hogging my resources...but with over a gig of RAM, nothing really hogs anything...theres enough to go around.
-
windows sets its own restore points every now and then, so if yours get deleted, its because windows has taken a more recent one...you could store them on a different partition, or on another drive.
-
if you want it to show you a logon screen, just add passwords and/or more accounts, and prevent it from loggin on automatically. OOBE has nothing to do with logging into accounts, it has to do with activating windows, and creating accounts before you actually get into windows.

hmm...being a quite lazy person sometimes [sitting here talking with people on various messengers for 3+ hours a day uninterupted, i guess it was important to find a few ways to stay in shape, and without too much aches and pains. well, i bike a lot, in fact yesterday and today i biked 20 miles, coughed up some really disgusting crap, feel loads better. i have a bad back, so i don't really have a good answer for that, other than my tendancy to slouch is huge..sometimes it feels better, but it isn't better. i do stretch a lot, however it doesn't do that much...sit in a chair that forces your posture...normally you'd want a relaxing chair, but its not always better. i have this habit of sitting way way forward, however its better to sit so that your back is kept up straight, and a fair distance from the screen, and blink..if your just sitting there, look away. look away more if the refresh rate of the screen is lower, like 60hz, thats a killer... well...now i'm off to remind my dad why i haven't touched his old computer yet. other than the fact that i'm saving up for a 3.0GHz dual core, to replace everything but my workstation. i don't want to work on 500mhz, 1ghz, or less anymore...i want good computer from now on. my workstation is not a crappy computer by any means, but a 500mhz slot1 CPU is. i want my LGA775 right now!

SATA with important data shows unallocated - pls. help
bonestonne replied to Barthes's topic in Windows XP
if you can run checkdisk on it, i'm quite sure that theres a big chance you'll get your data back. i had a problem with my external drive, when the power went out while it was connecting to my computer, half of my music was gone, but it was still taking up the same amount of space, after running checkdisk, all my music was back. -
huh. how many different things could cause this? other than a million or more, there are a few things you could try. dust could be hampering your processors cooling ability, so you'll want to get yourself some compressed air, and blow that computer out, preferrably outdoors, where dust wont be able to get back in. try running CCleaner, and cleaning up the registry. although after installing, you'll want to make sure your browser isn't checked, or you'll loose all your saved passwords and whatnot when its done. burn yourself a ton of CDs for backup, and get an autosave program, if i could tell you whats on my network, i would, but i dunno what its called. my sister set that up. you're system might have a low amount of RAM...maybe looking into what you have, and seeing if you need more will solve the problem. also, there could be issues with your RAM..running Memtest can give you answers to that. What are the exact specs of your computer? CPU/RAM/manufacturer/Operating System/Service Pack etc.

How to recover files with odd security settings
bonestonne replied to Idontwantspam's topic in Windows XP
glad you got it working, but the trick about changing permissions is that you have to do it with everything. no joke. every single file would need to be changed. -
is it possible to raise the FSB to 1066? i'm just wondering..i don't exactly plan on doing it just yet, but that would be cool, it would beat most C2D's if you could. how would it affect the actual processor in doing so? lastly, does anyone have a 925 that could talk about it? oh, and before i forget, whats the difference between the 925 and the 930 other than about $40.
-
i might be getting a 64bit CPU, i was wondering, is there any fully developed and worth using 64bit OS? so far i think if i do get it, i'll be going with a 32bit windows, and 64bit linux distro, but if theres a 64bit OS that is really good, i might think of trying it.
-
i've got a KVM switch for switching between linux and windows down here so i only have one monitor, i've got another monitor upstairs for the workstation... if i feel really compelled, since 2 of my 3 computers have dual display cards, i can bring one monitor to another computer.

How to recover files with odd security settings
bonestonne replied to Idontwantspam's topic in Windows XP
add your name to the users list that can access the folder...i remember doing that before..took a long time because you had to do it with everything. that or maybe unlocker can do it? never tried to use unlocker for it though. -
i saw that one, and i was thinking about it, but wasn't too confident right away with it, but i'm not shooting for performance...that can wait. i might jump on the board and CPU right away though, before that board goes out of stock...i'll have to talk to my mom about it soon. i have about $120, which will get me the board, and maybe the RAM too, the CPU will drop in price so i could get it with the gfx card if i can...we'll see next week, but thanks all...i'll let you know when i get into the build.
