Fans still working after shutdown, PC won't power down
bonestonne replied to Messerschmitt's topic in Hardware Hangout
SP2 removed a lot, i dunno if it'll show the shutdown messege. it has to do with ACPI unless i'm mistaken, you can't disable it. to turn off the computer, you need to push the power button...nothing you can do about it. -
Fans still working after shutdown, PC won't power down
bonestonne replied to Messerschmitt's topic in Hardware Hangout
if you're getting a screen like "You can now shut off your computer" or something like that, then just push the power button, and it should all turn of, no problem. many older computers were like this, such as Compaqs, and my old server is exactly the same. -
Is it normal after format to be used some space?
bonestonne replied to Messerschmitt's topic in Hardware Hangout
i can't say i get what you're asking. formatting a drive results in losing an amount of space [such as formatting an 80GB drive results in only 74GB of space that can be used]. the remaining 6 gb of space is reserved to store deleted items for a short amount of time. when that 6gb gets filled [and it doesn't take long], as soon as a new item enters, the oldest normally gets removed, never to be recovered again. other than that i cant say theres a better answer i can give. there are hidden files that windows is unable to show however, they control how the drive is mounted, and store information about the drive, and its record. normally only Linux can view these files [or as i've ever seen]. -
if you're getting 4 gigs of RAM, you'll need a 64bit OS to see it all. 32bit Operating systems have trouble seeing over 3gb of RAM, depending on the specific OS, sometimes less. quad core is a little over-rated right now, most apps [even the new ones] are just starting to adapt to dual core, so you'lre hardly ever going to utilize all 4 cores. gaming can hardly touch more than 2 cores, i have a dual Xeon rig and this dual core rig...all the games i've ever played are at their peak in these rigs...it 4 cores, the games don't get any faster.

sorry to double post and all, but i need this bumped. i just started googling some random phrases loosely relating to my problems, and "revive dead laptop" seemed to get me what i needed. this is some stuff pulled from my google search: many fixes include just a mobo replacement from IBM, however it doesn't appear to be just an IBM problem, or a Thinkpad issue, its widespread. this is going to make me switch to Fedora 7 over Ubuntu, as people saying Red Hat based distros didn't have this problem, and it was possibly ACPI related. can anyone back this up, expand on this, or kill my theory? or more importantly, does anyone have a laptop and know enough about the problem to have an idea?

i removed the battery, same thing. removed the CMOS battery, didn't help. i've also removed RAM, HDD, optical, reseated video cable, cleaned heatsink and fan....does absolutely nothing for me. i'm going to leave it unplugged for the night and i suppose all of tomorrow as well, and let the suggestions pile up. starting either friday night or saturday i'll wrestle with it again.

Ok, i've looked plenty into it, and i don't want to say my mainboard is shot [unless it definitely is]. I have a Thinkpad T22, 900Mhz, 384MB of RAM, 20GB HDD, Linksys WPC11 wifi card, and finally the correct adapter. well, lately, i've had this funny problem which just started actually yesterday, when i got the original adapter for it. yesterday, i backed up my CD inventory list, and i installed linux on it, because i felt that a free laptop should continue the free legacy. well, after i installed linux, i was using it for a while, all fine and dandy, and then i updated the OS [all 169mb of updates] and i restarted..and things were fine, but my login screen the splash screen weren't what i wanted, so i changed them...but i didnt restart right away, i figured i'd install stuff i tend to use most, Audacity, K-3D, and XMMS. well, while i was on the internet, i was looking for ways to get Ndiswrapper to work, but it just shut off randomly [which it has been doing lately]. and when i pushed the power button nothing..so i kept pushing the power button until it finally started...and it would get past the loading screen, and then wouldn't display the login screen, splash screen or any GUI. so then i wrestled it to using Knoppix...which was all fine and dandy. i was using the OS, i mounted the hard drive, and even browsed it without a problem. i went back to restart...didn't do it. now, if i push the power button really fast for a long time, occasionally it will turn on for 10 seconds at the most...rarely showing me the boot screen [iBM logo], but it doesn't make it to BIOS. i've googled the problem, people have had mixed results from the problem...am i without a laptop again? i really don't have the money for new parts or a new laptop..i still need to buy a second gig of RAM, a new HDD, and a new graphics card for this computer, which puts me in a hole. if anyone has suggestions of any kind, lemme know, i need a laptop for school, and this is all i've got.

thats actually wrong. AMD's are cooler than Intel in terms of wattage, which is what matters most. also, if you use Speedstep, the systems noise is determined by the heat of the CPU. oh, and its not all that common for a CPU to reduce its speed because of heat, its normally just the heatsink fan picking up. i have seen cores reduce their clocks though...especially when its been on for extended periods of time with little stress.
-
hey LICS, could you post a pic of the inside of your computer? what's it look like, the airflow, components, show where the fans are etc.
-
well, you really shouldnt be running it without a fan to cool the heatsink..an overheating CPU can cause more problems than just instability. what died, the CPU fan or the northbridge cooler? if its the CPU fan, what socket is it?

Replaced motherboard, cables dont fit...
bonestonne replied to drogemeister's topic in Hardware Hangout
well, you could use a pin, and raise the tab and put the pins where they need to be, or you could try to find individual plastic things for it, and go that route. i've done both in the past for computers i've put together. just keep in mind what polarity you put where, it does matter. as for finding the individual pieces to use for the front panel connectors, try the local dump where all the computers are and just look and see whats available. -
have you replaced the HSF yet? if the fan died, and you haven't changed it, its overheating. if you have changed it, the heatsink isn't properly seated, and its overheating.

Promise Tx4000, Maxtor drive and Netvista recognition

"Although, JBOD also makes the disks appear to be a single one, it accomplishes that by combining the drives into one larger logical one." JBOD is spanning, similar to using RAID to make one partition over multiple drives. it doesn't matter how many there are, it just has to be configured properly. -
can't help but to double post this one...ok, seems as though my last reply [although correct], wasn't a good answer. use windows, but add the rear sources, its not just random. control the whole source. you use the realtek agent to specify what you want to use each port for, use their color to define them in windows, and control them like that, don't use the recording mixer, its locked at a "U" or universal setting, which is supposed to be fine tuned via an in-line amplifier. HD-Audio isn't self powered like AC97...it doesn't put out as much, my speakers need to be turned up a lot more for HD audio than my Sound Blaster cards.
-
what type of BIOS do you have? its in a type of system preferences control...Graphics Aperature Size...best sizes are 128mb or 256mb. on my older box its at 256, not sure about this one because i need no graphic performance.

the unattend.txt has nothing to do with activation, but if you aren't using the Dell CD, but you are using the Dell key, it wont work.
-
i have the same audio as you, this is the control panel for the audio, its located on the taskbar, after you install the Realtek driver for it. thats what you need to look at. the round knob that an arrow is pointing at is what you turn, the two channels tell you what you're controlling. my sliders in the Windows audio control are disabled too, just use the Realtek program to do it.
-
when you made the unattended CD, did you modify the "unattend.txt" file on the CD? if you did, its possible that thats why. i've only seen one case where the serial in that file matches the one used to install, and countless cases where that number will not activate windows.

one thing that i noticed during my build is that some processors require a certain chipset to run. i don't think it'll be a problem, but still worth knowing. my Pentium D 940 requires P945 or P955 chipset, i guess it also works with P965 because thats what i have...when i saw that on the box i was kinda scared, but it ended up working so thats good.
-
unless you game, cards like the nVidia GeForce FX5200 are perfect, i'm using one now...i've had issues emulating with VMWare with it, but i guess that'll change when i go to linux [at least i hope].

how many DIMM slots are there? my friend had a similar problem after [quite stupidly] putting a DIMM in backwards and then quite literally burning the board. check the DIMM slots on the board for damage, check both DIMMs for missing pins or contacts. if both work individually, then you may be looking at a mobo problem.

^routing of the ATX cable...strange positioning...i'll be sleeving that cable soon. ^fan to do several things. 1) cool the HDD 2) cool the gfx card 3) cool the southbridge...it runs at 7v to stay silent. ^the back. soon i'll be cutting the grill that blocks that fan, and i'll be making a backplate for the mobo unless a friend has one...its a waste to buy one. waste of money. the PCI slot cover was removed under the graphics card to allow hot air to escape. ^temporary HDD, will be replaced with a SATA 3.0gb/s Samsung 320gb drive. not mine, so thats why it wont be staying. ^side shot with cathode on. looks relatively neat, could use a longer floppy cable, and the front panel audio cable needs to be plugged into the headers as soon as i figure it out. ^CPU-Z and Speedfans readings. North and South bridges are hot...need to find a way to cool them better...soon i'll stick a Scythe Kama Bay in there to help a little, and as i said before i'll be chopping off the crappy metal blocking my fan, and put a fan grill there to protect it. its a mix of show and workstation performance, not high end gaming or anything. it does what i need it to, and has some fun goodies to go along. for less than $300 USD, its not that bad eh? my only rant about it is that i wanted a Pentium D 925 as it was only 3.0ghz...with a FSB set at 800, why would i want to go crazy? i ended up getting 3.2 because the 925 went out of stock. eventually there will be more mods, but for now this is my main computer, my old workstation will be used for digitizing vinyls and then files will be transferred to this computer for remastering [as its faster]. i also installed my sisters photoshop, so i can play with that from time to time [i'll be getting an 8.2mp digital camera soon i think, so i'll be learning photoshop sooner or later]. i use VMWare and Microsoft Virtual PC, but when i get the new hard drive, it'll be running x64 Ubuntu, and i'll emulate Vista and XP, and if possible OS X for testing/comparing. -

tomorrow i'll post the pictures, but these are the specs of my new computer [finally done!] Case: Apevia X-Dreamer black with side window [already owned] PSU: Fortron Source Green 300W 80% efficiency Motherboard: MSI Neo P965 chipset CPU: Pentium D 940 3.2Ghz 2x2Mb L2 cache [EMT64 + Virtualization Tech.] RAM: 1GB DDR2 [333mhz 5-5-5-15] HDD: Western Digital 250GB SATA Graphics: [temp] GeForce FX5200 PCI 128mb DDR Media: DVD+/-RW 16x superdrive pictures later, its bedtime after i finish one thing, and the cameras battery is charging for a truck show tomorrow. -
leaving it at Automatic prevents that from happening altogether. i have a dual CPU computer and i've had that happen before..quite annoying because it doesn't utilize all my RAM either.

You are using two Pentium 3's right? *sigh* i wasn't referring to model names, i meant number of cores.
