  1. I've been running a 9600GT 512MB with a 300W power supply for almost two months now, and its been completely solid even under load. I also swapped my cooler for an Accelero S1 Rev 2. i don't heavily game, but in the games i have played, i haven't had a problem at all.
  2. ^new heatsink, for the 9600GT. Accelero S1 Rev 2. plastic junk is removed, that's why you may not recognize it. burned in the MX-2 last night taxing the 3D accelerators with Alice. might be an old game, but its still designed by the mac-daddy of 3D animation, Randy Pausch. idles near 40C now, 7C cooler than with stock cooler. just wish i was able to cool the VRMs with something...maybe i'll see if a RAM heatsink will fit on them sometime. The stock 9600GT cooler makes contact with them, which is why i see it as a problem, but when you look at the Fanless ECS 9600GT, with an Accelero S2, you see that there's no heatsink on the VRMs. mixed feelings about that.
  3. Rev A Ninja. I wanted the bolt-thru more than anything...no overclocking, no undervolting. funny though, my CPU is doing a lot better with the ninja and we both have CM cases Zxian...but even with a mid/high 30's idle, i'm sure it'll be up there under load. will test after i get my Accelero S1, i'll do CPU and GPU same day. looking at the pic longer, and my system makes me hate where the ATX connector is, but once i get some wire wraps (the white stuff the coils around it) i'll see if that makes me feel better.
  4. Scythe Ninja..those are the standard fan clips. lower front fan @ 7v, exhaust fan on the CPU header, heatsink fan @ 7v. silence is golden.
  5. wish i had a MBP...i like the interface, but hate the incompatibility with what i do. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/bon...er/IMG_2423.jpg ^for now..about a week. next up is when my AC Accelero S1 arrives. yeah, its a 9600GT. i like it, and it beats my FX5200 by leaps and bounds. there's still work to be done though. as always. don't you feel a little nervous with your tower on the edge of the desk maleko? my only question is what the cables look like behind it if its pushed that far back to the wall.
  6. i've used Winamp for years, and i feel like for general media organization and management, its excellent, but i wouldn't rip music with it. what is it that you want to know? once you open up the playlist and drag and drop files (audio and/or video) the UI is very obvious. once you move into the newer version, you get the advanced media library, but i'm still using an old version. i can get back to you with it, but i'm running Ubuntu right now, and i'm downloading Ubuntu Studio, and i prefer to use apps like that natively not emulated. i'm not sure how hard it could be to download it, and start exploring.
  7. i think my dads air compressor can top that, but meh...i don't know who makes it >.< oh, what's with the RAM by the window next to the compressed air, geek? no ant-static bags for it?
  8. I have a four port Belkin KVM switch that uses VGA and PS/2...USB>PS/2 adapters work fine with it, no complaints on that end. i used to use it when i had two towers down here, but haven't since...still have it though, someday i may need it, so i'm not getting rid of it.
  9. those 8800's must be choking...or suffocating like that...why not the SSC version? i'd hate to see the temps of the middle one, sandwiched between two other monsters. i've seen one 8800GTX and worked with it, and it far outperforms anything we use it for, but why not, it was a donation. that must be a gamers paradise.
  10. well, talking to Punto earlier led me in the direction of a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. Jcarle, its not that i'm willing to let go of old technology, its that i don't have the money [being a highschool student] to keep replacing everything i have. the only reason for the motherboard is that i intend to go for a Wolfdale soon, and its just unsupported by this motherboard. the soundcard i have is $130, but you can find them for $100...i can't find any equivalent cards in PCI-e form. that and i have a 160gb IDE drive...losing IDE altogether forces me to use an adapter, and you lose quality with every adapter you use, its just a golden rule. if i had $500 again, i'd just build a second system, but i don't.
  11. Hey all. I'm starting to look for a new motherboard for my computer, because it will be easier to then upgrade the processor. for now though, i want to upgrade to something that will still fully support what i currently have, and then have no problem moving into what i plan to get over time. Right now i have an MSI Neo F P965 motherboard, the BIOS is v1.7, and when i tried to update it earlier through the Live Update software, i just got BSOD'd every time. since this motherboard does not support 1333mhz Bus, it wont last too much longer for me, because i intend to move into a Wolfdale based system within the next couple months. right now, i need to have: Intel: changing to AMD would be too expensive at this point. Pentium D support: I don't have the money for a new everything, i have to reuse this for now (Pentium D 940). 4 DDR2 DIMM slots: i want to use all the RAM that i have now [3GB DDR-II 667]. 3 PCI slots: this is preferrable, but 1 will work too as long as the motherboard has onboard graphics. my soundcard is PCI, and this is a DAW. 1 PATA slot: old, yes, but i'd prefer to keep my optical drives on PATA for now, i don't need a new one yet, so i'd rather not buy it yet. Quad core support: first chance i get on a quad, i intend to take it, but that may not be soon. the form factor isn't my worry i suppose, i've preferred ATX, but i guess i wont complain about mATX, i just prefer having more room to expand because from time to time i have more than one soundcard, and they're usually PCI, so thats why i'm picky. I'd also like the assurance that i will be able to reuse my Scythe Ninja. I've been thinking about a Mini Ninja as well, but its not as important. I'd also like to have USB headers on the motherboard, so i can use my USB bracket, i have a lot of USB peripherals that i do use, such as USB audio adapters. Firewire isn't necessary, but i wouldn't complain about it, i don't have an ipod, but once in a blue moon i'll be around a firewire mixing board. I also only have a 300W power supply, so i'm hoping that's enough. its plenty for now and works great, but its not #1 on the upgrade list. The cheaper the better, can i say keep it under $100? I'm not picky, my current motherboard was bought open box, and i have no shame from that. I have to buy at least one new hard drive (500 or 750gb) as well, so cost is an issue, i'm not trying to be cheap. Linux support is also a plus, but i've gone over a few hurdles, and i can take a hit with it. Intel BOXDG33TLM is one board i was looking at, but the single PCI slot limits my capabilities. I don't use optical either, however i'd rather have it as an option. i'm not the savviest person when it comes to chipsets, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  12. hah, i'd back up any small text files that you cannot lose. or i'd find two that are identical in looks at least, take them apart and make/sell earrings out of them, for the techno-girl in your life =P if nothing else, sell them on ebay and charge for shipping as well.
  13. my Sp2 for XP x64 fails as well...but before it even gets anywhere. it verifies the contests, starts the install wizard, i click "Agree" and then i click next. once i get to where it would start installing the driver, it says that the incorrect *somethingalongthelinesofupdate*.inf file is the incorrect version. i have 64bit drivers installed for my soundcard that work fine, and other software works fine, but the OS will have incredible lag at times when i have multiple windows open, so i want to install Sp2 to see if it helps. any ideas on that one? **my install was also nlited, with a little removed, and drivers added, but no integrated service packs. i've downloaded SP2 twice from the M$ website and have never been successful in installing it. sometimes it even says i have the incorrect OS installed.
  14. thats a sweet keyboard and an extremely neat desk...better than what my desk looks like..is the case side a custom job? oh, and don't feel bad about your monitor, i just got a 17" yesterday before that, been using 15" LCD @ 1024x768 for seemingly ever.
  15. wait a little longer for penryn to be released. faster, cooler, and better for so called "future proofing". you can't really future proof a computer, there's always something newer out there. Photoshop definitely benefits from extra cores, however gaming may not for a while. ripping CDs or DVDs is marginally helped by a quad core, but that also depends on the codec and your choice in settings. the quad may help in photoshop, but you may not notice its beef for a while. dual core may last a while though, its really hard to say if quad core is really necessary for a home computer, even with photoshop. faster bus will do more than having 2x the cores, clock speed means nothing when you compare different architectures. another thing to think of is a cheaper dual core, because then you wont have a slow quad later, you'll have saved money, and be ready for a faster quad core when the time comes. best way to future proof is to get a motherboard with plenty of compatibility with stuff you think you may never need. when the time comes, you're more than capable.
  16. B00: what do you think of the Cooler Master Elite? i've got my rig in it, and i have no complaints, scythe ninja just barely squeezed in with my board, love it. my G3 project is further and further. got RAM, and fixed the motherboard. no pictures just yet though. will update pictures once i get a tablet [assuming they didn't sell out]. i have a little bit more surgery to do on my G3 project though, and this is what i'm scared of...i need to get the ATX input off the board. completely off...and i'm going to soldier power cables that will flatten out so the case can close, and i'll throw in a CD-RW for the time being. 40 more solder points to go...total finished will be 106. soldering iron master yet?
  17. i can't say i fully understand the frustration you have, but poor instructions have been a problem i've had in the past. looking at the online instructions, there's disgustingly poor documentation. i've worked with many point and shoot digital cameras and they seem to be fairly universal, some have more options than others. i've always trusted Canon for digital cameras over kodak though...i only use kodak 35mm film though..
  18. weird, i've had that happen a couple times under ubuntu 7.10, and its like a disease with no cure so far. well, in ubuntu, while its not perfect, you've got the "ugly set" of codecs you can get in Add/Remove Programs...it lets you play mp3, mp4, m4a, mov, divx, avi, and many more formats that i've never tried before. you have the restricted drivers for nvidia and ati, while not perfect [i know that all too well] they can work, and very well when they do. it depends on how far you're willing to go for your system with any linux distro..none are perfect, not really work better than any other as a whole...flaws still exist, but maybe not for you.
  19. i'll look into this new Sabayon release, i actually really like it...i've used 3.4 a lot, and i love it..i like installing it with the Fluxbox environment, and it performs great..although not so friendly with the laptop. i would definitely suggest this distro for others.
  20. after lots of taking apart and changing, i've come to no conclusive answer as to what the real issue is with this. i've taken apart the entire computer, changed the heatsink, backplate for the heatsink, tried another power supply, but the best i can get is that when the motherboard tray isn't in the computer, the computer works perfectly. the second i put the motherboard tray back into the case, the issues start. is there something i'm missing here? i can try a couple more things, but i'm not expecting much at all. any ideas would be greatly appreciated, but this is definitely the end of the line for me and buying apevia products. i dont even know what's exactly wrong with it.
  21. ok, so my sisters Apevia Q-Pack, first Gen. has been having some issues lately. we have it almost entirely apart, and before i go put it back together, i'd like to know if anyone can verify what the LCD front panel really does look like. i've contacted Apevia, and they said that they can replace the LCD component and we just return the defective one to them, however i'd like to know if that's really the issue. it wont POST every time you push the power button, and after taking off the front bezel, the LCD looked like this: http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/bon...mp/IMG_2225.jpg can anyone tell me if thats what it should look like or not? a new power supply isn't exactly the first option for this right now, especially since the ones that do fit are $60+. thanks in advanced, bonestonne
  22. well, using my headphones are the closest i get to hearing the max. fidelity. i'm [now that i've had the chance to use a pair] looking for a set of Edirol [or similar] monitors for this computer. the quality is just sick. plus i'm sure i lose a bit of fidelity going through and RCA to 1/8" adapter from a gamecube. well, i'm assuming that the 32bit is the absolute limits, but i save things as mp3PRO in Adobe Audition, i have the mp3PRO decoder in winamp, and i'm hoping that once i get the right studio monitors, i hear what i'm missing. i tend to rip music in iTunes and WMP at 320kbps @ 48,000Hz to squeeze what quality i can out of the card too. i guess if you wanted you could try some .flac and see if thats any better...it sure is a good way to kill space on your drive.
  23. tough eh? i'm pretty much in a similar situation, only i'm pushing more quality. i can't find a single 32bit/96khz sample ANYWHERE. nothing i've ever ripped even at the highest audio settings can even come close. soundcard: M-Audio Audiophile 24/96. it records fully at 32bit as i've tested, but i can't notice a slight difference during playback. worth every penny i didn't pay for it.
  24. i second that, avast has email protection, which is clearly stated as not being included with the free version of Avira...actually someone asked me the same question earlier this week.
  25. i've been running v3 in 64bit XP for about a week now with no issues, i guess from what i've tried, you could put the firewall in installer mode, and then it would be silent for a while, but after 5 minutes or so [i think thats the time period] it would give you a prompt to return to normal mode. also, there's a checkbox in the main app to go in/out of installation mode. past that, i'm not sure of any ways.
