how about an "impartial" option. we are a "Dell" shop at work...all 200 workstations... there are times when the tech support people are knowledgeable while others are incredily "slow" for a lack of a better word! so does one bad apple ruin the whole batch...? yes, but you gotta weigh out the other good times when you call tech support!

Sorry to hear about JP. it's amazing how those furry little guys can get so wrapped up in our hearts...sometimes we wanna just scream at them for doing something bad, but in the end there's nothing like having them beside you (and behaving!) Not to take the glory away from JP, but I can kinda relate, we almost lost our orange tabby on or about 1999. We used to let him out and roam the streets (not anymore), one night he came to the front door meowing up a storm, he had a tiny little red dot on his leg. My parents, brother and myself had no idea what it was, could of been a fight bite for all we knew. He cried most of the night and could barely walk. Next day took him to the vet and found out that his left leg bone was shattered by a BB Gun shot.... some a-hole decided to play target practice with the cat. The operation would of been 1000 dollars but we had no money and were going to put him to sleep. The vet felt so bad watching my brother crying through the cage at the vet that left the procedure at $250 using "low end" materials. Now 8 years later with "low end" materials he is still alive, walks and jumps like if nothing ever happened to him. The only prob is that he sheds alot...apparently a side effect of Feline AIDS...go figure! As long as he doesnt get sick or get in a fight with a sick fight he'll be ok. I could throw in the story of 2 hamster and another cat I had with my Xgirlfriend but that would take too long! RogueSpear, another four legged friend will come along to make you just as happy as JP once did! I am attaching some pics of our orange tabby, Hershey!

a quick google will show you the way. I worked in the POS (point of sales) system for a year for grocery stores. It would involve what could be called a "Server" which has all the information and then the pc's in the front that would have the client software that would connect via the network to the server. good luck! ceez

Is there a prog to find mp3s on network worskstations?
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Well I guess I stirred up an interesting topic.... I have some good news... After endless google searches with different terms I ended at downloads.com where they had a little program called SoundJudgment v2.11. It's 30 days shareware, so use it for what you need it and then delete! You can create a batch file with settings specified on a config file created with the program. Then you can add that script to a logon script or in group policy to scan all local drives. We have about 230 workstations and we had no complaints about anyone with slowdown on the machines with this script running... of course all this is happening without their knowledge! The report can be in txt, csv & html, named with either the computer name, user name or other custom option. If you're looking into something like we needed I definitely recommend this app. Even though it seems a bit buggy at times. It might pick up a jpg or bmp or skip a couple of mp3's, but the time saver and the fact of knowing how many mp3's are on the network is a great thing.... you can even run it on your servers and point the config file to a share, boy was the IT Director fuming when he saw mp3's on the shares!!! Thanks all for your input and thanks gunsmokingman for that that vb script. I'll see if we can put that to use also. Ceez ps- it can also search for video files!!! -
Is there a prog to find mp3s on network worskstations?
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
mjc, thanks for the links. I am only left with 1 option since most seem to be unix/linux based. I am going to show the boss the mp3spider and see what he thinks about it...what do you mean by it being "nonfunctional"? Have you tried it? -
Zup fellow msfn'ers!!! I dont know if this is the right forum, but it has to do with a windows 2003 network! Our network is growing and people are somewhat abusing of downloading mp3's with itunes to their workstations. We need to have a way to show the owner of the company the amount of mp3's that are on the pc's and network. Trying to prove the point that is time to tighten' up and stop playing mr nice guys! So I was wondering if there's a simple app that can scan the network pc's to just look for mp3's and then point the location and if possible total file size. Any thoughts? Thanks, Ceez

@SuperSniper... You are experiencing the same problem that I was experiencing with my new mobo upgrade. Hopefully you have not gone through the whole reinstall process. Check out my problem and fix on this thread. Let me know if it works for you! ceez

BSD when connecting a configured HD to a new mobo...
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
well after endless hours of google-ing, I found the answers.... there were two of them, the 2nd one was so much quicker and easier, to make a long story short... ms kb link at end of post 1st fix boot normally into your current mobo, insert xp cd, select upgrade, let it do its thing, when it gets to the point of restarting let it restart BUT turn it off before it continues the setup, then move harddrive to new mobo. OR boot with the xp cd on the new mobo and do a reinstall of the os without partitioning or formatting. now, the 2nd one is so much easier, with your current setup (pre mobo upgrade or HD move), find your drivers.cab file under %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\I386\ and extract Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, and Pciidex.sys , copy and replace those files into SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers. Now copy the following: save it as a regfile. run the regfile and merge into the registry. shutdown the system and move the hd to the new system/mobo. turn on and "walla' windowsXP is back in business. what a great fix. Thanks everyone for you help... you might want to remember this one! ceez ms knowledgebase article -
@ripken204...drilling holes in case not my idea of fun...more of like making a mess out of the case! @Thai3g_Eclipse, thanks for that link, i'll look into it.

BSD when connecting a configured HD to a new mobo...

@ripken204, it's my primary drive. I just want to be able to move it from one mobo to another without having to backup everything and reinstalling. Thanks again, ceez -
BSD when connecting a configured HD to a new mobo...
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
@Porn Loader: Yes, this drive DID have a C:\ drive, fully configured working XP. I dont want to wipe out my drive, I want to keep everything I have in it...a lot of stuff on a 200gig drive! I did forget to mention on my post that I tried the fixboot on the recovery consolde but did not try fixmbr. I will give that one a try later. How about if before I connect it to then new mobo i go to the device manager and uninstall all the current mobo devices and then pop it in the new mobo? I'll give that a try after the fixmbr.... thanks, ceez -
Here goes another question.... i dont know what's wrong with me.... So as some might know from a previous topic, I was having problems keeping a new mobo+cpu powered on for more than 10 minutes, this issue is taken care of. Now I want to connect my current 200gig HD that was on my old PC and hook it up to the new mobo. The few times I have done this windowsXP usually starts up and detects all the new components from the new mobo, this is not the case this time. Right before it reaches the WinXP splash screen it blues screens with a stop 7b error message. I tried botting in safe mode and it also crashes when it reaches a file called 'mup.sys' Is there any way to get this to work without having to reinstall windows on the drive. What do you guys suggest Thanks again guys, ceez

thanks everyone, blowing the air out it is!
-
zup peeps, I have a case fan that I am going to place on the back of my case near the cpu. Should this fan blow the air in or out of the case? I would assume "in" since there are no other places to place a fan for air circulation(like on the lower front of the case). thkz ceez

New mobo, cpu, ram, case, powers off after 5 minutes...

@ssmokee, you were right, I placed it on the "wrong side". It now ran for about 30 minutes, time to put it to the test! Thanks again! ceez -
New mobo, cpu, ram, case, powers off after 5 minutes...
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Hardware Hangout
update... Well I survived hurricane Wilma....bunch of trees down anywhere and lost power for 5 days...life slowly getting back to normal. My current PSU is a 350w that has worked with no probs for 3 years pushing a 1.5ghz Athlon XP 1800, 2 HD's, 2 CDRW's, Vid, Nic, Sblaster, 2.0 USB card....and a floppy drive! I swaped out the psu, went straight to the bios and kept an eye on the time.... it ran for 10 minutes and powered off, after that when i try to power on it runs for 3 seconds and powers off. So definitely not a psu issue. I immediately took the heatsink off, it does not feel hot. Removed the cpu, it does not feel hot either. Used the good ol' "smell test" and nothing smells burnt. I am starting to believe that I might have a faulty mobo or cpu... I dont see any other explanation. Time to go to the customer service desk and fight for a replacement... Thkz ceez -
New mobo, cpu, ram, case, powers off after 5 minutes...
ceez replied to ceez's topic in Hardware Hangout
@ ripken204, the PSU is the same brand as the case itself, a JustPC 415W. I could take out the PSU of my current PC and connect it... man that would be so annoying. I guess I'll give that a try after hurricane Wilma passes through south miami! I dont feel any heat coming out from the cpu when it's on. @ aspenjim, I cant use any monitoring software.... i cant load any OS! Thanks for your input. Anyone else? Thanks, ceez -
Hey msfn'ers... I bought a new Chaintech Mobo with AthlonXP 3000+ barton core , an ULTRA CPU fan and a single ULTRA PC3200 DDR 184pin module @ 1gig. It's mounted on a JustPC Case 425W. (it seems like the links dont quite work, just right click and select 'copy shortcut' and paste in new browser window, sorry ) Now this is not the first time I put a PC together so I am not a n00b at this. I put everything together, cpu on mobo, heatsink (there is a "dab" of heatsink on the CPU -size of a grain of rice!), inserted RAM on the DDR1 slot on the mobo and placed on case. Connected a 20gig and a CDRW to primary and secondary IDE, conected all power cables. Powered on, BIOS settings autodetects the CPU at 133mhz freq (333) and shows the 1gig RAM and XP3000+. The 1st time around I was just reading the available BIOS settings and it powered off. I pressed the power button but would not turn on, flicked the power supply rocker switch...no luck, after a few seconds it powered off and 10 seconds afterwards it powered off again. Waited a few minutes, everything powers on and stays on, for about 5 minutes before the whole process happens again. Has happened at least 4 times. I even tried installing windows, but it shuts down 5 minutes into the text based setup. The CPU fan is spinning fine, the power supply case fun is running fine, no funny noises, just a nice "hummmmmm". I have re-seated the mobo power connection and the heatsink\fan & CPU. There is no smell of "burnt" on the cpu or the power supply. Thinking it 'might' be RAM, I even tried a 256mb module PC2700 module (supported by mobo) which I am currently using on this PC.... it still reboots! So I am thinking it could be a faulty CPU? Power supply? I guess it would be easier to exchange the CPU at my local tigerdirect store than getting another case... Any suggestions? Thanks for reading! ceez

To burn CD's and DVD's I use Stomp Record Now Max v.4.50,has never failed me at all and it's not bloated with junk! I think they are now part of sonic and do not like the newer versions.
