  1. Symantec made an uninstaller a while back for nav (shows you the quality of their product ) though it does not work for 2004, it works for versions pre-2004. It is called Rnav2003.exe removal utility. The manual directions DO work however and there is a reg file for removing NAV2004 as well. Go here For system works 2004, d/l the reg file and follow the directions. Go Here I keep these uninstall tools handy when i know symantec products are on a problem computer. The only good thing is WinDoc.....running directly from the cd
  2. From the very useful Tech-hints.com site: http://www.tech-hints.com/files/nt4w.zip
  3. http://www.masaieditor.com/products.htm the eval. version of admin studio and wise are fully functional as well during the trial period
  4. http://winxp.bink.nu/bootcd/ has instructions on this topic. Though the work-around is written for sp3, it works for sp4 as well.
  5. Alcohol's driver caused my 2003 to BSOD often when it loaded during boot. I would stick with D-tools for a few days to see if alcohol is the problem for you. Also, check their forums for any solutions.

  7. if you do not edit the dat files properly they are not usable.
  8. i also have a lappy w/o a floppy. trust me, get a usb floppy drive. in the meantime, i would use RamDiskNT. It can emulate a 2.88/1.44 and other sizes as well. Virtual PC is VERY picky about floppies so i would not really bother with that as a good alternative.
  9. when you manipulated your files with the hex editor, did you simply replace or do an over-write?
  10. d/l the bcdw module for cdshell and use command bcdw acropartex.wbt (or similar name) to boot acronis product. Acronis products are linux based for bootable media so you wouldn't be able to launch from dos anyway.
  11. if you can't point to the original installer file for whatever reason, go to ms's website and d/l msicuu and msizap. This will let you delete all entries releated to your problematic msi installer with one simple click.
  12. you better edit out those serial numbers from your post what is your root directory structure?
  13. open gpedit (Start-->Run-->gpedit.msc) and look at your settings.
  14. i know of your problem. here is your solution from Installshield plus some follow up info. Replace your old ikernel with the new one. If the problem persists, get a eval copy of vbuild 2.1 and let it rebuild that installation so it uses dBender instead. vbuild is great for Installshield v5 and above installs as it makes smaller and more compatible install packages. It also extracts all files with folder destinations so you can easily track the locations of EVERY file a program will install.
  15. shady problems call for shady solutions.... try this program to bypass the version check
  16. Try this slimmed XP Recovery CD ISO. It is ~ 7megs and can quickly be included in a MultiBoot cd if one knows about such things.
  17. use acronis partition expert. you will be able to unhide and assign a drive letter to a recovery partition in one step within windows. i do this a lot when i run into HP's. They have a rec. part. that has all drivers, winpe to install, and all programs that came with the comp. It is simple and safe for the most part.....
  18. Tested your script w/ cdsh v2012. It worked fine using cdshw.com for debugging. Are you using any special graphic screens? Sometimes vpc has trouble clearing /loading splash & graphic screens. Check for trailing spaces though it should not matter. Double check that all modules included with cdsh are present.
  19. i use it. the home edition is free, and it has low overhead to run. Pretty quick, as well. Eset Nod is the top dog IMHO.
  20. the progs, (esp. mcafee) you are running will slow your comp.they do not need to be running all the time if you use web browsing common sense. mcafee alone will cripple a system with its running agent. Also, clearing the web cache constantly will slow your surfing because it has to d/l the same file over and over if you do that. turn down your web temp folder to about 35 megs. Check what starts when you begin an xp session and delete (be on the lookout for realplayer, quicktime MS works, adobe gamma loader). Also, turn off useless & unneeded services as well. Get XP-Antispy and load default settings. Post your start up list and services if you are in doubt. In display properties, turn off everything in 'effect'. be sure to turn off the fade transition effect. If you have system restore service running, reduce it by at least half (you will have fewer restore points, but your system will not have to work nearly as hard in the background. go to the advanced tab (r.click my comp --> properties) and check 'adjust for best performance" then check the box 'use drop shadows for icons'. Also turn off remote assistance and desktop if you do not use them. make sure you have a minimal amount of items on the desktop. it will slow you down otherwise. get a defragger to defrag the mft, consolidate free space, etc. try that and post the results. have you applied any reg tweaks? is explorer.exe running at 99% most of the time?
  21. 1.you can also try to uninstall the modem driver, then reinstall if it has a yellow ! in dev. manager. 2. try to reinstall the driver from an xp cd 3. swap the modem into a different pci slot. If onboard, disable in bios, start windws and then restart with modem bios enabled. 4. Check for phatom devices in device manager and uninstall them if they are present. upgrading win9x to win2k never seems to go smoothly.... the two freeware programs on this page will be very helpful to identify, download, backup, and resolve driver type issues. i highly recommend keeping these little gems somewhere safe
  22. go into to the bios when your virtual os boots and verify that cdrom is 1st in the boot order.
