When attempting to run Windows XP, it brings me to the screen where you can choose the safe modes or normal etc. However, when I pick any of the choices, it gives me the following message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can atteempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I realize that it does not state which drive the Windows folder is in (it's in C).

I am like many other people, and I purchase computers with pre-installed Operating Systems, and I rarely upgrade. Thus, I do not have a Windows Setup CD-ROM. I have other computers running Windows XP Home Edition, and I was wondering if anyone could help me in fixing this problem.

do u have something that u can set it up with?

i mean some companies put the i386 folder in to the c drive or make another drive (d) and put it over there...

if u have that u can setup again but when it prompts u what to do when it says "windows have been found, what shall i do" type of dialog just say repair"

btw that "system" file its a 4.75mb file.

i'm thinking that file should be unique to your computer. so it might not be on the cd. also maybe u can try

go to start menu

go to run

type sfc /scannow

and it should place the files back though as i said i think that file gets created not copied. i'm sure someone else with greater knowledge will reply when they get up :)
