Adding a Hard Drive to a Dell
LiquidSage replied to Halzions's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
There should be 4 screw holes on the bottom of your HD. If the frame holding your hd doesn't have any holes under it, you can grab a drill and then screw the HD(upside down) into it. Pain in the a** to move afterwards though. -

Get the 7200. The power requirement is negligable. The real power drainer for a laptop is the display and the cd drive. Also, i find that a lot of people leave attached devices (wifi card, usb items) in when the laptop is working on battery and that IMO adds up more than a higher speed HD. Let the HD work a little harder so it spends less time in use seeking and writing I upgraded from a 4200 HITACHI Travelstar DK23EA-60 to a 7200 Travelstar E7K60 and with Hitachi's femto slider feature I really haven't seen a negative impact in speed or power use. Also, it's pretty silent. The overall heat my laptop gives off hasn't changed from what it used to be. I am happy enough with my upgrade to ramble on and recommend it here.

I tried it for a while about a year ago (and anti crash) and i really didn't see too much of an improvement. I will admit that i found the Battery Doubler app to be useful. It did bring a bit of new life in my laptop battery.

WinXP Manager and NetFramework
LiquidSage replied to totoymola's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Get a MSI editor such as AdminStudio or MaSaI and include .net installer with the WinXP Manager installer. I was able to run WinXp Manager by first doing an Admin install and the putting the yanicsoft folder in a winrar sfx. Also, i imported the registration key via bat file during this modified install. I had .net 1.1 install before hand and it worked fine w/o a reboot. -
sounds like you had cdimagegui set to use optimzation as cdimage doesn't actually compress anything. Try them both. If you added PE to your CD then the size difference sounds about right.

Try mounting yoiur ISO and then reference the drive instead of directly mounting the iso file in Virtual PC. Make sure you are rebuilding the iso if you are editing the iso directly.
-
winiso boot files are created as .wbt. WBT's are created in a different fashion and are not the standard for bootfiles. Grab isobuster and try using the bootfile generated from that. (I'm assuming you extracted the bootfile and then renamed it with a .dat extension.)

Look what I found in LongHorn, Windows Memory Diag
LiquidSage replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Multi-Boot CD/DVDs
You can add this to a multi-boot compilation by putting windiag in the i386 folder. Choose to make a cd image and then use IsoBuster (or whatever you like) to extract the bootsector. (ex. WinDiag.dat) The bootsector will be standard size, 2k. Then just call the bootsector using your bootloading program. This is a specialized bootsector. Unlike a standard xp,2000 bootsector making a call to 'i386'. This boot sector makes a call to windiag by using 'WINDIAGBOOTFIX.BINI386' If you have an existing i386 folder at your CD root, Don't Worry! The windiag bootsector made in the ISO will only call windiag specifically and any other bootable creation using I386 at your CD root won't be troubled by it since windiag won't be loaded. -
are you using cdshell v2.0.11 and the bcdw plugin v.1.5z? Your problem, can arise using different versions (esp cdshell) and not having bcdw.csm in the modules folder. Check your spelling for everything as well. BCDW (standalone) handles .wbt's directly if you are more comfortable using that as your main bootloader instead of cdshell. Post you tree structure and cdshell/bcdw versions if you are still stuck. good luck

Thermaltake Tower 112 is what i'm using with the silent 90mm fan option. My temp loads are almost on par with my water rig at overclocked loads. It's heavy, silent, allows for 2 fans, and not for the mod novice. I'm extremely happy with it.

About 40GB of data lost... any tips for recovery?
LiquidSage replied to SilentRob's topic in Windows XP
Make an image of your entire hd, sector for sector and save to a new HD. Any attempts of recovery will almost always result in further degradation of both your data and chance of recovery. Personally, I have used Disk Director 9 will a reasonable amount of success at finding lost partitions.(Recovery Expert to be more specific.) I have also (by chance) recovered some lost NTFS partitions by installing Win2003 on a clean HD and then attaching the damaged HD right after setup finishes copying the install files and reboots. Win 2003's dskchk kicked in and automatically did a very long NTFS Stage 2 fix. -
ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt
LiquidSage replied to bamboozled's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Try replacing the ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrnlpa.exe before a reformat. This issue should not be so bad that it would justify a reformat. Copy ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrnlpa.exe from the service pack files you have currently installed. (If you have win2000 sp4, grab the admin install of sp4, extract, and replace the two files on you system.) Also, make sure to check your boot.ini and make sure it is standard. Your problem may very well be the result of a custom boot screen issue if you have one installed. IMO, the best way (gui-wise) to check both the boot.ini and the two files would be to get a bartpe boot disk. Otherwise, boot into the Recovery Cons. from your install cd and use the copy cmd or start an sfc check. Also, your issue may be caused by a virus (windows and system32 exe files are the first to get sick). If you are going to salvage either the OS, or your personal data from it, run a complete scan! -
you might want to try burning at 1x speed, DAO, make sure you close the session, and possibly use a normal dvd-r. RW's aren't always forgiving. I hope you didn't use a udf rw (nero incd for example)

Diskeeper9 and Security Center problems...

I don't quite know what you are getting at, but if you want to extract all files from the installer exe, change the extension to .zip. Use winrar, r-click on the acronissetup.zip file and 'extract...', (Some archive programs have a hard time opening acronis.zip's. Winrar extracts exerything so long as you don't try to open it directly. Maybe that has been fixed since 3.4 final though...)

make an additional boot folder leading to your winxp w/o winnt.sif. You now will have 2 options, install winxp unattended and install winxp regular. an unattended distro breaks the optionto use recovery console from the bootable media containig winnt.sif

1st make sure you rebuilt your dvd as a new iso. Sometimes changes will destroy your boot sector and/or files (esp if you use WinISO on an optimized image). 2nd, Virtual PC has a well known problem using large image files directly. You will need to mount your image using Alcohol120, Daemon Toos, WinImage, etc and then capture the cd drive on which it is mounted

i don't think you are using cdshell v2.0.11
-
I don't see the point since you have two completely seperated groups. I guess you could use a conditional statement and have it return a msg "Insert CD 2...' if it returns an error code. Much easier (and makes more sense) to just label one disk 'Dell' and the other 'Windows'. A sinple task to make the disk 2 menu since you just need to change the menu names and bootloader names after copying menu 1.

the firmware updates are highly recommended and need only be done once. I'm not sure why d&d isn't working..... check your cd's dma mode. did you also install new drivers like intelinf chipset v6 for example. Did you install a different burning program as well? perhaps the aspi layer was overwritten. did you build the xp cd using nlite? maybe you slimmed it down too much.... try nero's registry checker and general clean tool. It fixes a lot of cd related problems (not just nero's)

Error message before login window
LiquidSage replied to archdev1l's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
on the ms site...there is a d/l for a win2000 sp3 bootable registry recovery disk. It is made on the framework of the winxp sp1 bootable 6 disk set. I would d/l that and give it a go. I have used it on xp and xpsp1 to recover a few bsod probs before with good results. -
