  1. The RSS Problem .. Microsoft need a glyph (probably 16x16) for Internet Explorer 7. .. But NO RSS. Symbol is IMPORTANT but COLOR should not be. ie. Orange background may not suit all applications. RSS letters are not required. Firefox has something. *What's needed is one standard to indicate a web feed. AND it has to look good at 16x16 pixels! Try it - you can't do it. Make a nice big image that looks terrific, but when reduced to the toolbar icon, becomes a muddy mess. This is a 128x128 image .. And reduced to 16x16 .. It may also need to be a Bitmap. Can you do it ? You will be the only person in THE WORLD to have designed that icon (glyph) that everyone uses. MS have some ideas on their blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/archive/2005/10/08/478505.aspx PS. Ofcourse, all you have to do is get the world to agree. Just like the United Nations.
  2. On a dial-up connection at 44K with a stiff breeze I use the Firefox 1.5 B1 Flashgot Extension with Free Download Manager.
  3. MS Agent Peedy sings .. *An Outlook Express email letter, ( .eml ) in a zip download. Just unzip, check with your virus scanner, and click on it, and it will open in Outlook Express. You may need some extra sound components free from Microsoft. But you can still read the words. ::..Download..:: .
  4. Reducing voice sound size for email Outlook Express If you read the *Lyrics for: / Brown Eyed Girl / into MS Sound Recorder the default SAVE is PCM 22.050 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono and the sound file will be: 2.61 MB (2,740,646 bytes). Depending on your speech. However, if you click *Save As .. for the file, (and NOT *Save) you will see Format: and a *Change* button at the bottom. Click this before you type a name to save and change the Format to GSM 6.10 8.000 kHz, Mono and the sound file will be: 98.7 KB (101,070 bytes) *That's a saving of 2,639,576 bytes.* And the sound quality is good enough for voice. And the size makes it now possible to insert in email. A talking email. "Hi grandma, how are you on your birthday .. etc .." From Outlook Express > Format > Background > Sound (Browse for wav file and check play 1 time only.) (You can also change the Format by clicking > File > Properties in Sound Recorder.) That's a pretty staggering saving, isn't it. Try it. It's not music, but voice quality. What do you think? PS. Incidentally, the line from the song "Making love in the green grass" caused a HUGE controversy in my day, as did The Stones "Let's spend the Night Together". My generation changed the world. My grandmother used to think saying "Bloody" was the worst thing you could do. And my mother used to think the same about "Bast*rd" which may still have some effect, hence the * in place of "a". What's in a name? You need to be taught things are bad to believe them.
  5. Paul & Bill's Big Adventure IBM doesn't make toys .. but, when pressed by a horde of nerds (but mostly early inquiry from small business customers), it decided that if anyone is to set a standard for a toy computer, it should be them. Those specifications still hold today, although the floppy disk is floating belly up. When the nerds said can we use those specs to make our own PC's, IBM said sure why not. (It's not going to float anyway, dead duck, there's no mass market for toy computers.) Just like Bob Hope, IBM like a BIG ROOM. Apple still wouldn't let anyone play with their ball. Anyway, making the hardware is one thing but stuff the software, 'let's buy it.' Who is there? Two very young guys named Paul and Bill (Paul & Bill's big adventure) at something called Microsoft. Right place, right time .. almost. I see 'Men in Black' pulling up and asking to licence their software. We've got the hardware coming out and need any old thing to get it to at least blink. 'Sorry' say Paul and Bill, our stuff is not really up to the job yet. But we know of this other guy you can talk to. OK. IBM drive off. This other guy is not home, but his wife is. 'Can we come back tomorrow?' say the men in black. Not really says the guys wife, 'we're going on our vacation ..' So, men in black back to Paul and Bill. We'll give you $100,000 up front, they say. Lot of money in those days. Oh, alright, says Bill, reluctantly. What now? says Paul to Bill, when the men in black had gone. We got MS DOS but it only ejects a floppy disk. I know a guy, says Bill, working on his own DOS. We'll offer him $25,000 for it, lock, stock and barrel. Then we'll rename it MS DOS. Good idea! says Paul, let's take the rest of the day off. AND THE REST IS HISTORY .... Urban Legend =:: or ::= Fact ? .

  7. Last warning MSFN Forums > The General Stuff > General Discussion > Funny Farm I was using IE 7 Beta 1 downloaded from a respectable web site but have returned to Firefox 1.5 Beta 1, as it's in better shape. Also, I supported Robert Downy Jnr for as long as I could, but there comes a time when you just have to give up .. Free Download: Internet Explorer 7.0 BETA 1 .
  8. from my site: zones were the major flaw in ie's previous versions. all of the MICROSOFT security advisories related to ie dealt with trying to keep the internet from crossing into the local zone via the system DLLs. non-ie browsers don't deal in zones. they can't act as activex containers. they don't have system DLLs like WEBVW.DLL or HSHTML.DLL that could allow html buffer overflows, permitting code to execute locally.(btw, as for people bashing ie... it kind of reminds me of a saying that pops up on slashdot occasionally. if an admin or someone knowledgeable tells you not to do something, it's probably better to stop what you're doing and ask why rather than hitting 'reply' and posting that they're wrong. there is a possibility that they may be telling you from experience, and you are repeating things that "everybody just knows," like the capital of kansas is kansas city. of course it isn't, but it's what a lot of people say. repeating it doesn't make it true, and repeating the Internet Explorer Is A Target Because Of Its Popularity Myth doesn't make ie secure.) IE7 Beta 1 does have 'Zones'. Opera 8.5 has a serious flaw. And after ten years, can this be forgiven. If you save a web page, say to your desktop, in IE or FF you get a html file AND a folder with all the images, sub- folders, etc. OPERA saves the html file AND every other files individually. Scattered all over your desktop!!!!!
  9. Lucky George Bush didn't do that when he landed to tell everyone the war in Iraq was won! At least that was on my news service where I am located: Paradise. --- PS. Do you think the co-pilot actually landed the aircraft. He'd be the Top Gun No.1 flyer in the US wouldn't he? No chances taken.
  10. There was one I did with LH5048user at Flexbeta he named (Windows 2007 Professional) that I modified when the Vista name was released. It's in the thread: MSFN Forums > Microsoft Operating Systems - Software Discussion & Support > Windows Vista (formerly Longhorn) >Longhorns new name? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=13343&st=100 Here it is anyway, just to fill things out. I still am knocked-out by grafx1. I feel that Microsoft may be leaning towards a darker look with Vista ..
  11. They are all really good .. But I voted for XPero's IM Program as I use it on my desktop for a FOLDER named * forum posts *, where I store notes and things. Oh, I grabbed the Opera one also, as I just got 8.5 free to try out ..
  12. Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 is NOT warez, rooter skunk .. It's a free product from a public listed company on the New York Stock Exchange. You Conepatus leuconotus wood pussy, get you're facts straight .. Microsoft is testing the product first with criminals to see how they hack it. You farandole fartlek, your just kissing in the wind .. If you don't understand the posts, then don't reply! I want a legitimate copy of Windows IE B2 as I have IE B1. I'm not concerned about people breaking into my computer as I have limited bits & bytes to steal, and several traps are waiting for them. At the moment I am Browser poor with IE B1 and FF 1.5 B1. I take the risks of bugs in the betas. But get this into your head - you cannot get a warez version of FREE software - get it, IE is free! Now be a good felucca and felwort off!
  13. Google to search Mars before Microsoft. Google was expected to announce plans Wednesday to build a new 1-million-square foot corporate campus at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, according to a published report. Google, the internet's leading search company, is expected to build on NASA property at a now-vacant site in the heart of Silicon Valley, which will include offices, housing and roads, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing unidentified sources. (from Area51) "There is some land at Ames Research Center that could offer logical expansion space for Google,'' company spokeswoman Lynn Fox said Tuesday. She declined to comment directly on the building plans. The company has scheduled an afternoon news conference with Google chief executive Eric Schmidt and Scott Hubbard, director at NASA Ames, a space research center since 1939 that has recently been cutting staff as part of the agency's nationwide restructuring. Rapid growth in web advertising tied to online searches has fueled Google's stellar performance in recent years. The company has $7 billion in cash from stock offerings and huge profits. It hired 10 employees each business day in the last quarter and has a global staff of nearly 4,200. Some observers say the partnership between Google and NASA Ames could create a new hub of technological innovation in Silicon Valley.. The new facility would be larger than filmmaker George Lucas' new complex in San Francisco's Presidio and nearly as big as the 52-story office tower in the Bank of America Center in San Francisco's Financial District.
  14. This is absolutely stunning.. grafx1 As with your IE7 logo's as well..
  15. Stunning .. I think you must be a professional designer .. Downloaded a copy. MS Agent - Merlin

  19. Difference between Google and Yahoo see also .. Should Steve Ballmer .. make a hostile take-over of Google? http://www.flexbeta.net/forums/index.php?s...t=0entry85936
  20. Google is the best at present because of their smart Linux hacks and servers from any PC shop. (That's what they say ..) I used to used AltaVista (which is now owned by Yahoo!) before Google, so would probably go back to that. See also .. Should Steve Ballmer make a hostile take-over of Google? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...=0entry397294
  21. Rack 'em up .. « So called Google 'Pizza Boxes.' Hot enough to bake! Imagine the heat coming from those. I don't think my local computer stores have these, but then again, I wouldn't know what to do with them anyway. The economies of the Google approach:The cost advantages of using inexpensive, PC-based clusters over high-end multiprocessor servers can be quite substantial, at least for a highly parallelisable application like ours. For example, a $278,000 rack contains 176 2-GHz Xeon CPUs, 176 Gbytes of RAM, and 7 Tbytes of disk space. In comparison, a typical x86-based server contains eight 2-GHz Xeon CPUs, 64 Gbytes of RAM, and 8 Tbytes of disk space; it costs about $758,000. In other words, the multi-processor server is about three times more expensive but has 22 times fewer CPUs, three times less RAM, and slightly more disk space. Much of the cost difference derives from the much higher interconnect bandwidth and reliability of a high-end server, but again, Google’s highly redundant architecture does not rely on either of these attributes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plus, hack a bit of Linux, and you've made a few billion dollars.... Ah, if it were only that easy! -------------------------------------------------------------- Directions at Microsoft - or the floating dead in the water approach! Over my dead body! *I guess I'll be using XP or maybe VISTA for the rest of my life!!!!!! Green Apple - anyone .. I wonder if Steve gave Bill his 200 million back? iPod anyone? Not the one with the 'squashy screen' ..And then there's our unfortunate, former darling, Yahoo .. ********* "Yahoo Users Get Phished": Attackers use sophisticated new methods to tap users' IDs and passwords. http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid...7,tk,spx,00.asp ********* And I couldn't get my SOUND and MODEM to work when I installed Linux! (Mandrake) It had nice wallpaper though. So, what are we to do? Tell me someone - PLEASE!
  22. Think American forum moderators are tough? NEW CHINESE RULES You think American forum moderators are tough on your comments, try posting in China. Never a paragon of freedom, communist China is clamping down on free speech more and more each day. In the latest move, the government has decided to restrict any speech that's not in the interest of socialism and must offer "correct guidance of public opinion." As much as we might hate our loud-mouthed pundits on both sides of the political fence, at least we give them the freedom to be obnoxious. http://tinyurl.com/d5s7y ---------------------------------------------------- What do you think? wood pussy more F in Fun, rooter skunk!
  23. Well, with MDFolder you click > Create New Folder > The form pops up, and you type a name for that Folder, then >OK. Windows is not bad with File & Folder Tasks view, than Folder View which seems to evoke the Command shell. However it's easy to have it close the name New Folder before you have a chance to type the name, by losing focus. Then you have to Right Click on it again and select Rename. ------------------------------- bxNewFolder ..is listed as a 392K download MDFloder is only 11K
