  1. *dying* Bad news : I was about to convince my brother to get the Core 2 Duo and finally he said no. He told this would be sufficient for him for the next 3 or even 4 years, since he needed no CPU power and doesn't intend to play all the most recent games. *arghhh* The idea behind P4 D805 was Tom's Hardware article. However, according to what he said, there is no need to overclock the processor, so no watercooling, I should even find a cheaper CPU. So I'm thinking about an A64 3000+ Venice, single core, 78€. Could you advise me a nice mobo ? Do you think this CPU with a 7600GT could be a limiting factor when it comes to games ? As for the PSU, I still don't really know : I thought it should be the last thing to be found because of SATA connectors, power needed by CPU/GPU... (btw, would 400W be enough for 7600GT, A64 3000+, one HD) Also, I haven't been able to find any benchmark, adding to my confusion. Last, a DVD burner is needed. And I am wondering : is LG, BenQ or ASUS reliable for such peripherals or should I rather take a Sony or a Philips ? Enough bad news. I found a 17" 1280x1024@75Hz TFT screen, 13ms, at 142€ : BenQ T705. Sober design, high luminosity and contrast, mostly good user feedbacks. Should fit nicely with the window (at sunrise the light comes directly in the room and at sunset, it is reflected by a really white building). I decided to take Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 : better price, better performance (source TH). What do you think about this GF7600GT @166€ then? Again do you think a CPU such as a A64 3000+ Venice could limitate framerate in games ?

I think there won't be legal problems with updating files. But there is a slight possibility, so slight, it breaks something with windows installtion. For example, two DX8 files (dpnlobby.dll and dpnaddr.dll) are normally registered (regsvr32 way) but their DX9 versions can't be registered. I doubt this would cause any problem because when upgrading manually to DX9 these files are certainly unregistered. I have no experience with "Gold" tech support but I think some may tell you "you did something that is currently unsupported therefore I can't help you.". And we agree this is too risky for business. Tech support not always motivated. :/ (did you know most french tech supports are in fact located outside of France, in northern Africa ? )
  3. The "close microsoft-ds port" tweak is not a good one imho. I'm not speaking of the way it is implemented in nlite but one the tweak itself. To me it is just too stupid. It's like you want to prevent anybody from using your computer and you set your computer to run on 220Volts instead of the usual 110Volts (or the other way round for me). From what I've seen it does not disable NetBT but breaks it by providing windows wrong informations.
  4. Absolutely possible. Maybe you removed a needed protocol. Do you remember having use the option not to install default network components ? And there's also the "Close Microsoft-DS port" tweak which seems to have some side-effects. We'd really need your lastsession.ini Warning : what follows is not 100% guaranteed, I've not been able to find a good place explaining SMB implementation in Windows quickly and in an understandable way.| (that's why I want to setup a group of 5 VMs and study how they communicate between each others) Port 445 is used in 2k, XP and 2k3. This tweaks is pretty weird because it seems to prevent you from using Network Drives. However, network drives existed before port 445 (as far as I remember, at school we have some computers to conducts experiments in biology and they run 95/98 and use network drives). In theory if port 445 can not be accessed windows should use ports 139/138/135. This is a typical situation when accessing SMB shares on a win9x computer from win2K and higher. I don't think Samba has problems but I think this "Close Microsoft-DS" tweak has side-effects. It's also possible it has something to do with a Netbios over TCP/IP (not sure about the exact name), which handles port 445 afaik. But this is unlikely since the use of port 445 was a surprise to Samba devs : I don't think Samba would require it even if your computer is XP.
  5. I'm not 100% sure about what you want to get rid of but my first logon is always on the automatically created "Administrator" account. I think that when you use "Classic Install" a.k.a. Win2K appearance (in Options), you don't get that. Again, I can't give you a precise answer because I used XP flashy install only twice. If you try, then you should use a virtual machine then.
  6. Have you tried inside a virtual machine ? It may be unnecessary but I think you should get this setuperr.log. Have you tried UBCD4Win ?
  7. I also had "loading please wait" a couple of times. But not always. I guess IPB simply doesn't support some character sets in Quick Edit. NB: using a WinXP SP2 computer WITHOUT nlite.
  8. Of course you're right to use the best thing available. But as far as I'm concerned I don't have an high-end audio chip (integrated AC'97 in my laptop, which I don't have anymore btw). And I find this is pretty handy, and portable.
  9. But OOBE is needed for Windows Activation.
  10. First of all, you can't integrate any "network install" update. Then, nlite doesn't handle DirectX ATM.
  11. @Scubar, I could not find any 7300GS with DDR3. Any link or benchmark ? Also, OCZ memory is definitely too expensive : +50% compared to the Samsung which is still reliable. For NCQ, this was mainly an example. In fact, I think SATA-1 was only a new connector. SATA-2 brings some new features and techs and it would be silly not to have them considering that there is absolutely no price difference between SATA-1 and SATA-2 drives. PS : I'm currenty in holidays so I have plenty of times to take photos. The only thing I hope is I'll convince my brother Core 2 Duo is the only possibility.

Because update packs are sort of windows's parts redistribution I think. :? As for modifying, I'll check what french laws say but I doubt it allows it (though reverse-engineering is allowed for compatibility purposes [making a visual theme compatible ?])
  13. Changing my passwords would be a pain. However my ! password is pretty strong I think and if it is only stored as a hash then I'd take the risk.
  14. You advise to change passwords. What does msfn stores : clear password or hashed password ?

Isn't redistributing or modifying any part of windows forbidden by MS ? Of course, home users won't be bothered by lawyers but such things would maybe "break warranty" for windows and this could be an annoyance to companies. I see no reason nlite could not be used for company purposes except the fact that MS has annoying lawyers. PS: from a strict legal point of view I think update packs are not legal. However I doubt MS would won any lawsuit against something protecting end-users from flaws. (though they forced WinUBCD to be renamed to UBCD4Win !)
  16. Thanks a lot. I'm not done yet but it already looks much better. I decided to drop X1600. It's more expensive and less performant than a 7600GS or GT. I found out that Asus is making nice 7600 cards without fan, only passive cooling. There's even a Extreme N7600GS TOP Silent 512 which is OCed by Asus and which seems to be really fast. However I don't know if I'll take that, I still have to check the prices (7600GS is around 120/130€ whereas 7600GS is aroung 160/170€). One nice thing with 7300 and 7600 cards is they don't need an additionnal power supply. I checked the timing for the RAM I found. PC4200 is 4-4-4-12 but I couldn't find the ones for PC5300 and PC5400. I'll keep on searching. As for the hard drive, I prefer SAT-II not because of higher transfer rates but because of new features such as NCQ (imho SATA-I had no interest). WD drives are more expensive but I still have to check that. Also, I'm really wondering if it is worth having 16MB cache on the HD; I have 2GB RAM. .... 30 minutes later The cheaper Maxtor drive seems to have some problems, so I took it out and realized all 250GB SATA-II drives are 77€ +/- 2€; really no difference. I think I'll take that one : WD SE 16 Also, I don't think I'll take a Plextor : too expensive. ... never thought I would spend so much time on this! And you both already helped a lot.
  17. The title says everything : I have problems using € symbol with quick edit. This is the EURO symbol : € I'll post this new topic, then quick edit my post without changing anything and it won't work anymore. @any mod, full edit my post, don't change anything, don't type, just press "submit modified post" and € symbol should be back.
  18. I check my Spam box in gmail and there are 5 spams in it : 22 July, 21 July, 21 July, 20 July and 20 July. I am wondering how much do other peoples get per day ? Also, every time I get a spam in gmail, I use the "report as spam" button. I don't know how efficient it is, but anyway I do it. Does anybody else does the same ? This was to say : if this spam is caused, indirectly, by msfn, as far as I'm concerned, it is still a minor annoyance (if not an annoyance anymore)
  19. The task manager thing is maybe caused by the removal of secondary logon. However I think it is because you probably removed Terminal Service, as I do. And then, the box in task manager can not be unticked because it is not there anymore. There's a reg tweak for this. However, the key is a binary/hex one and does not set a single setting but many. Enabled will look like : XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX 01 XX XX XX XX XX And disabled, like : XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX 00 XX XX XX XX XX It's pretty hard to find the proper byte to change. Moreover if you use somebody's else reg tweak it will probably change some of your settings for task manager. The easier thing to do is to change the column width : drag and drop so it has 0px width. As far as I'm concerned, this is an annoyance. I'll probably make an app to change this or something.
  20. In the reg tweak, use HKLM instead of HKCU (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USEr). You should also change this in HKEY_USERS\.Default, except if you want to keep it for users you will create in the future.
  21. When I need to rip something like that, I usually plug my mp3 player in and use its LINE IN function to record. The quality is usually very good. 4 days ago, I recorded "Zelda : Link's Awakening" intro; it's a GameBoy theme. (it's also pretty funny to play SuperMario at max level on a HiFi system )
  22. Ok, thanks. I'll let a tape near the box. *always try*
  23. Hey guys, my brother decided to build a new comp. I'll say "we" instead of "he" because even though he would keep it for him, I intend to use it. edit : € means EURO, and it's pretty nice with current € vs. $ rates. edit2: forgot the use of the computer : light gaming, lots of forums, website designing and coding, VMWare, 7zip and maybe maths. So here are the preliminary specs we agree on, of course, the cheaper, the better. GPU : Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro @ 150€ -> we play games but not that much RAM : 2GB DDR2 Samsung : PC4200 or PC5300 or PC5400, same price (67€) but I wonder what frequancy would be the best, does the FSB matter ? -> 2GB is just nicer, it will be needed for Vista (if...) and I need it now to run 6 VMs simultaneously Mouse : good old trusty Logitech Click! Optical Mouse @ few euros Keyboard : probably a PS/2 one : USB one are just unusable because of weird keys dispositions, missing keys.... and much more expensive (+30€ !) We just want a keyboard that lets you type. Now, uncertain ones : Hard Drive : a 250GB SATA, max 80€, which one ? SATA1 or SATA2 ? LCD screen : 17", 1280x1024 We need advices on good screens; as I said, we play but not that much, I read and write a lot, as does my brother. Also, there will certainly be a window behind the screen, see the pic: Here is a list of possible screens. Case and alim, euh, no idea. DVD Writer : there are so many I can't decide. And last, the components we arguee on. I told him about Tom's Hardware DIY 4GHz dual-processor and he wanted it (Pentium4 D805 OCed@3.4GHz, aircooled so he can't reach 4GHz) and now I think a Core 2 Duo @1,86GHz - 195€ would be better because it is faster, cooler (so it does not need a high ventirad which would cost some money therefore we save some money on this and also it needs less power) A P4D 805 costs 110€. MOBO : he found a Gigabyte GA-8i915P Duo Pro - 105€. I think this is not the best and not necessarily the cheaper. What do you think ? Also I think both core 2 duo and P4 D805 run on socket 775. Many thanks for your time and your comments.
  24. Floppies doesn't like cellphones. Afaik there's no problem with thumb drives. Btw I am wondering what is the effect of WiFi over old tapes recorded from TV (the things we used before DVDs : my brother thought it would be good to put our wifi router near our tapes ["near" means as near as the two | just there : | | ]
  25. An old one, in an HP computer, DELL did not even exist at that time. It think it was a maxtor, and it was bought in 1997. (also has a 500MB IBM harddrive on a computer running windows 3.11 and it is being used on a daily basis -> my dad's office in fact)
