  1. Yes, it is, I just did test install of Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6 + IE 5.01 SP2 and Windows Update has found (and installed) 26 MB of updates. The URL is http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/R1150/V31site/default.htm Petr
  2. These files are used in the English version of the following operating systems: Windows 98 and Windows Me 5.0.0.7022 - 643072 bytes - timestamp 35474F94h -> 29/04/1998 18:04:36 md5: f2c94d09f87ad02a0636230567f6d143 Windows 98 Second Edition 5.0.0.7022 - 643072 bytes - timestamp 3720A205h -> 23/04/1999 18:38:29 md5: 5616a7582144ded2f551c0b8c5d69b11 Windows 2000 5.0.0.7051 - 565760 bytes - timestamp 33FA7CF2h -> 20/08/1997 07:13:22 md5: fd31a6a72e5e4af02daababb2b1fd89c Windows XP 5.0.0.7051 - 565760 bytes - timestamp 33FA7CF2h -> 20/08/1997 07:13:22 md5: 11ce755e00794c8ccd1a4f71282f8167 Windows Server 2003 5.0.0.7051 - 565760 bytes - timestamp 33FA7CF2h -> 20/08/1997 07:13:22 md5: 860da5120cf5e01696cec6a24b496da4 So the newest internal compilation date has 5.0.0.7022 version form Windows 98 SE. Petr
  3. You can download from the web full Windows distribution, just use Google... but this is not the way chosen for the unofficial support pack. msvcp50.dll should be part of Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0, this is part of Visual Studio 97, I was able to locate direct download links from Microsoft - but Visual Studio 97 Service Pack 3 does not contain msvcp50.dll fiale at all. Petr
  4. This version is part of Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems but AFAIK it is not available to people who did not bought them. BTW, the "string" file version is 5.00.7051. Petr
  5. Richedit 5 has the same font switching problem as Richedit 3 and 3.1, only Richedit 4 works fine. Something was corrected in version 5.50.99.2012 (rom KB900459) but still it is not OK. Petr
  6. Windows Update for Windows 95 is still operational.... Petr
  7. My opinion: Windows 98 (SE) is mostly used on old computers. In most cases, it means also users who are using this operating system for years. In most cases, these users have their favorite application(s) for every task and will see no reason to use different one. As a result, it means that any BIG pack of 3rd party software will be useless for them because they just use different programs. There are fans of Winzip. There are fans of WinRAR. There are fans of 7-zip. There are fans of PowerArchiver. There are fans of Adobe Reader (specific version). There are fans of Foxit Reader. If you will make one big pack, it would either contain the installers only - or there will be big problem with file associations. What player should be added? Media Player Classic? WMP7.1? WMP9? WMP10? RealPlayerOne? What version of PowerDVD? Or BSPlayer? Or what? There are too many personal preferences. Or was there any other idea behind? Petr
  8. I think the biggest problem is lack of testing and feedback. All patches and fixes require deep testing in various hardware and software environments. Some incompatibilities has been identified and files not included, like ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2226 and others. Many reprted bugs were not tracked down, like various problems with modems. And the worst thing, the registry corruption was solved by switching off registry consistency tests (SystemReg=0). There are just a few people able to test the fixes and the service packs in whole - but usually in one (or a few) environment(s) only. And this is definitely not sufficient to make any high quality service pack. Petr
  9. However, in the Win2000/XP/2003/Vista versions of Notepad you can choose whether to save TXT files in Notepad either in ANSI Encoding or Uniccode Encoding from the Save As dialog box. From the Save As box, default encoding is set to ANSI not UNICODE. if you do the steps on that site to reproduce the problem but save the file in UNICODE format instead of ANSI format, the problem WILL occur. If you save the file in ANSI format, the problem will not happen. It was just wat I read. Now I have tried to duplicate the "bug" and I'm not able to do it - in Windows XP, the file is saved as ANSI and opened as ANSI, everything as expected, so I don't know what the "bug" is about?? I have followed the steps exactly. Petr
  10. Does anybody know how to use MS patch (mspatcha.dll) to extract the RTMQFE branch form packages like KB916281? I have found on MSDN pages how to use mspatchc.dll and mspatcha.dll by other programs, but is there any way how to use them as standalone utility? Or is there any tool that would create this type of patch files and restore them back? Petr

  12. And is it really safe? I have read on many forums posts of unhappy people that thought that it is safe to unplug the flash device without the the "safe unplug" procedure - and accidentally they found that their data disappeared, and sometimes even the flash disk got damaged. (Maybe the real cause was different but who knows?) Petr

  14. The problem is in automatic recognition of Unicode text files. Notepad for Win95/98/ME is not able to handle Unicode text files at all. Petr

  16. Strange. I download files from www or ftp server at speed about 450 KBps on my 4-Mbit line, with no download accelerator and no tuning of Windows 98 SE - just default install. Petr
  17. As you can read at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/w...t7/wrkappa.mspx there are 4 different basic types of Windows 98 - United States, Middle East, Far East and Thai. These 4 types contains many different systems files because of different functionality. Gape's unofficial service packs are for United States versiom, and it means that this service pack will be fully functional on English, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Greek, Turkish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian versions of Windows 98 SE (with some text strings in English) but not on Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Korean Windows 98 SE. As you can see at http://old.winpack.org/petr/win98_internat_files.html (column EHE = Enabled Hebrew) only few files (greee ones) are exactly the same in U.S. English and Hebrew Enabled versions of Windows 98 SE. I see the only possibility - just to replace all changed files back. You may start with kernel32.dll and other vital system files. Petr
  18. Anyhing new? Was anybody able to find the real 2.52 version? Petr
  19. Do you know this online tool? http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/ Petr
  20. Thank you, this io.sys witout logo was posted here also by Tihiy some time ago. Yes, there may be several workarounds, but I'd still prefer to be able to move localized strings into original io.sys for ME from Q311561. Does anybody know that is the difference in functionality of winboot.sys and winboot.ebd in Windows Me? The size is different. Petr
  21. I can use either original winboot.sys or English winboot.sys from Q311561, I do't think it is godd idea to use winboot.sys from Windows 98 SE - besides of different DOS implemented, it is much bigger, contains different logo etc. And what more, Windows Me contains also different version called winboot.ebd for use on the boot disk. For correct localization of Windows Me service pack it is necessary to localize also winboot.sys and winboot.ebd - but I don't know how, the contents is not readable, it looks packed. Petr
  22. Hello, does anybody know what is the internal format of the IO.SYS file in Windows Me? As it is well known, all IO.SYS (WINBOOT.SYS, WINBOOT.EBD) files published by Microsoft in the Q311561 knowledge base article are English version, although they claim to be localized - they are not. For Windows 98 (SE) it is very easy, there are just three standard blocks of localizable texts, so it is no problem to transfer them from the original localized IO.SYS to Q311561 IO.SYS. But Windows Me IO.SYS uses some different format, it seems to be packed but I have no idea how to unpack it or how to put localized part of the IO.SYS to the IO.SYS from Q311561. Any ideas? Petr
  23. Originally they were built manually, then I wrote simple batch file for auto-generation of most of the necessary files. just these two files (and later the generated file is here too) 1st level subdirectory: "files" contains complete unpacked service pack (with or without the following files, they are generated automatically or not required: sp2.cab, supp.cab, slayout1.inf, slayout2.inf, advpack.dll, W95inf16.dll, W95inf32.dll) 2nd level subdirectory (inside the "files" directory): There are two directories, sp2 and supp, containing files belonging to sp2.cab and supp.cab respectively. How it works? The .bat file does the following tasks: 1. create sp2.ddf and supp.ddf files 2. makecab will use these files to create slayout1.inf, slayout2.inf, sp2.cab and supp.cab 3. iexpress will package everything together to the final package 4. all temporary files are deleted. Maybe it is nice solution - but it wors, and is not dependent on the location of the root directory. I hope it is correct - I did it more than half year ago. Petr
  24. Do you have any information about Win9x support in future Opera version? I'm not familiar with Opera roadmap. I know that the versioning system is not exactly the same but: Current version of Firefox (1.5) works on Win9x. Current version of Opera (9.0) works on Win9x. Next version of Firefox (2.0) will work on Win9x. Next version of Opera (?.?) will work on Win 9x or no? Next next version of Firefox (3.0) will not work on Win9x. (probably) Next next version of Opera (?.?) will work on Win 9x or no? Petr
