  1. Partitioning is usually safe provided that you use a current release.
  2. There is a way to grant specific administrative tokens to a limited account.
  3. What's so great about Longhorn anyway? How will it revolutionize computing?
  4. If Linux had any user-friendliness, then the mass-market would have long submitted to the penguin.
  5. How did that quote go? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I think the same goes for this. Spyware starts up with Windows, usually by sneaky methods, so why not just disable all registry startup paths? I've done this and all of my occasional scans never detected a bit of spyware.
  6. Why buy a stripped down version when you can take off Windows' clothes yourself?
  7. It's some sort of ID Windows uses to identify objects.
  8. Antivirus is already obsolete on my computer .

    Mindows Project

@bigman1 How's it going? That's a tough question . No, the truth is that I haven't worked on slimming it further because the nvidiabeta.zip file contains the slimmest functioning build possible. @tom_vilsack You need an explorer.exe replacement.
  10. If there's an official one, why do you need this unofficial one? Maybe it's been brought up before, but I haven't the time to read twenty pages . EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out . BTW are you sure claiming Microsoft is the publisher of the pack is legal?
  11. I dunno how many people confused the graphics memory with the system, but the specs are for system memory.
  12. The Venice core overclocks very good . AGP is a good choice only if you don't plan on upgrading. Many cards that come in AGP and PCX flavors are identical except that AGP costs less. Socket 754 might also be a good choice, since AMD might base their future processors off of Turion, which is S754. As far as I can tell, your computer will be capable of playing all of the current games, but probably not future ones.
  13. Did you enable Direct3D and video acceleration?
  14. Do you have a firewall blocking your browser application?
  15. Microsoft does not recommend using Longhorn alpha for any mission-critical tasks.
  16. http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,...,1790569,00.asp For Longhorn PCs that are customized for "living-room scenarios," Russell suggested PC makers strongly consider optimizing around 64-bit, dual-core processors. He also said dual-channel memory; a minimum of 1 GB of memory; and a high-performance and capacity disk drive (averaging 3000 GB-plus)would all be nice to have. "Longhorn will provide an absolutely fabulous gaming experience," Russell told WinHEC attendees. In order to be able to take the fullest advantage of Longhorn as a gaming platform, Russell suggested PC makers gravitate toward 64-bit dual-core processors, 1 GB of memory, 256 MB of graphics memory and advanced LDDM support.
  17. We also have a pretty good idea that it is what we think it is from all of the alpha releases.
  18. Dunno why so many people are complaining that you shouldn't game on a Server 2003. There is nothing wrong with the games. It's just the installers, which checks what version of Windows it is. That's why Doom 3 will install on XP-64, but not on Server 2003, even though they share the same code. If you don't get what I'm saying, take a look at my screenshot: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=At...pe=post&id=6989. I installed Server 2003, but somehow "converted" it to a regular XP Pro install, still using 2003 files. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Look at my post a couple steps up. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Take a look at this: http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/Articl.../2816.html?Ad=1 Server 2003 internally is tweaked beyond your control so as to be more optimized for server tasks. Switching it to XP Pro solves the problem .
  19. There's no way to get rid of it permanently, it's an integral part of Windows. But you can delete all links to the folder.
  20. Press F8 as fast as you can during startup .
  21. Check if these keys might be it: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU]
  22. If you are using WinRAR, then the ISO file will appear to be an archive, which might have led timidbull to believe it's a zip file.
  23. Microsoft hasn't released the system requirements yet, but does have specifications for a "Longhorn-ready" computer.

    Alternate Shell

Or you can rename the alternate shell to explorer.exe and make it a cab, then move it over to your UA CD.
  25. Some people have nothing better to do .
