  1. A better example would be with XP Embedded then. XP Embedded is based off of the same code as XP Professional, yet I have built many images without a page file present. The argument that there's still a page file buried in the bowels of Windows can't hold here, since the target device was a thin client (i.e. a machine without a hard drive). This image was for my local library, which runs common user applications like Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, etc. These machines run almost all day with abuse from hundreds of users, yet no one has complained about any system instability .
  2. Photoshop relies on its own swap file, not the Windows one. I have used it for more than a year without a page file with no problems. Performance also degrades with a page file. Don't remember how to get it back again, but there's a status indicator in Photoshop that shows your performance level. Ideally it should stay at 100%, but once the Photoshop swap file is in use, the performance level drops. The more swapped memory you use, the lower the performance level. I'm not saying a page file is bad though. Windows is usually intelligent enough to page out only when necessary. But sometimes it pages out memory even when you have plenty left. I'm sure we've all had those moments where we minimize an application, and when we open it again, the disk starts rattling a bit before the application finally reappears. Even if that's not a problem, if you have enough RAM to not need a page file, then why waste the disk space?
  3. Have yet to encounter one that does. Can you please give some examples?
  4. System has 2GB of RAM and no page file. For those of you who have trouble interpreting the graph, as the program (Advanced Port Scanner) approached 2GB, it simply crashed and returned system memory usage to normal levels. Hope this disproves the theory that a page file is absolutely needed for system operations.

    Vista DVD?

    RC2 key expires June 2007.
  6. Links have been pulled. I'll have them back up shortly.
  7. I was thinking of something else when I clicked the link...
  8. No, it means there is a memory divider.
  9. Well I beg to differ. I didn't change any settings and WFS allowed me to do so. Assuming that the user will change the default settings puts the blame on WFS/MS.
  10. You need Cleartype ON! Or else the text will look like that.
  11. Short of finding a similar hack, there's no way to remove the notice from an evaluation copy of Windows.
  12. It's your graphics card. Windows Vista is more sensitive to overclocked hardware .
  13. Many of you have expressed a desire for an updated USP5. Although I lack the expertise to do myself, I do have a singular thing to contribute back to the community. A while ago, Gurgel had generously given one of his most important development tools, sfxcab.exe. It's this same tool that allowed him to package his update into a service pack installer. He had, however, asked that I not redistribute it. I respect his wishes and will not do so in any circumstance. But if someone or a group of people can create an updated USP5, zip it up, and the community agrees upon the fact that it is of reasonable quality, I'm willing to package it up with Gurgel's tool and upload it for all to download and use. I'm as eager as anyone else for an update, and I'm sure this is what Gurgelmeyer would have wanted .
  14. Hate Windows File Sharing. I had it on to share files with other people in my network. Then I got a new computer, and was curious to see if \\192.168.1.2\C$ would work, and sure enough, I had complete file access from my new computer. Not sure I feel safe with that kind of security.
  15. The importance of reviewing the performance of prerelease builds: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34915 Some people said earlier in the topic that RC1 was still in development, and hence performance should be much better when Vista goes gold. Obviously that's not the case, and Microsoft has even said so directly. Guess I won't be finding any incentive to switch to Vista anytime soon, especially if someone ports DX10 over to XP.
  16. What sound card does everyone have? I have the X-Fi and nForce 4 onboard sound.
  17. I'm planning on migrating from Opera to Fyrefox, but I'm not sure if that's a smart decision from a security point of view. From what I've heard, Opera has zero unpatched flaws while Fyrefox still has a few. Is it worth the switch? And I'm hoping that the Fyrefox gurus here could help me with this little customization problem. I would like to be able to set a maximum height for the address bar, and a max width for the tabs. Example is shown.
  18. Post your favorite icon packs in this topic. Mine: Elements Minium
  19. Mozilla Sunbird is a free open-source calendar application. Very basic (like Firefox) and supports themes/plugins/extensions as well.
  20. Dunno why the corporations are so keen on shutting down YouTube, but I can vouch for the fact that it is effective advertising. Rarely ever watch TV since there's nothing that interests me much, but I watched the trailer for Heroes a month ago on YouTube. It looked interesting, but I didn't actually care to find out when the show would start. Then today, I stumbled upon the full episode of the premiere, and amazingly, I decided to watch it . And...it was great!!! Second episode's coming on in an hour, and I'm already addicted .
  21. Because RC1 is three releases away from public, and Build 5728 is only two. Unless you're expecting miracles, a good indicator of the final build quality is of the RC build performance. RC builds mean that Vista is as good as done, with only *minor* issues left. A 20% drop in FPS doesn't qualify as minor in my opinion.
  22. The GNU Public License (GPL)?
  23. Not to put you down or anything, but there's a much more accurate implementation of the glass style here: http://www.joejoe.org/joejoe/Design/Vista_Glass_PSD/
