  1. That's just the latency of the DPC to see if your system can handle real-time content. I'm looking for a tool that measures the actual latency of the card itself.
  2. Even so, I'd rather not bloat up my system and instead just edit the desktop.ini file for the same effect.
  3. Well then some botter's going to get rich.
  4. My comment had no intent of malice, but take it any way you wish. As a side note, I might caution you against making it open-source, as you're not legally entitled to redistribute Microsoft's IP (Minlogon). Copy of the revelant sections of the XP Embedded EULA: c. Redistributable Files. Provided that you comply with the Redistributable Requirements set forth in Section 1(d) below and otherwise comply with the terms of this EULA, Microsoft grants you the nonexclusive and limited right to reproduce and distribute portions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT as incorporated in Runtimes you create through use of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT in accordance with the terms of this EULA (the “REDISTRIBUTABLES”) solely for development, testing, and evaluation of your Prototype. You may not redistribute the REDISTRIBUTABLES except as incorporated in your Runtimes in accordance with the terms of this EULA. d. Redistribution Requirements. If you redistribute the REDISTRIBUTABLES you agree to: (i) distribute the REDISTRIBUTABLES only in conjunction with and as a part of your Prototype that adds significant and primary functionality to the REDISTRIBUTABLES; (ii) not use Microsoft’s name, logo, or trademarks to advertise, market, or promote your Prototype; (iii) include a valid copyright notice on your Prototype; (iv) indemnify, hold harmless, and defend Microsoft from and against any claims or lawsuits, including attorney ’s fees, that arise or result from the use or distribution of your Prototype; (v) clearly mark such Prototype as “prerelease” or “beta” version and restrict use in compliance with the time limit specified in Section 2 below; (vi) not permit further distribution of the REDISTRIBUTABLES; and (vii) include a notice to the recipient(s) of the Prototype that such recipient(s) not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Runtimes in the Prototype, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation. If you have trouble interpreting the meaning of this, it is illegal to redistribute any part of XP Embedded unless your user has a valid XP Embedded license AND use it to test/develop/evaluate an XP Embedded image. And my project is merely suspended for the time being. Count on it being released alongside with Windows Codename Vienna.
  5. Wasn't Beta 3 due back in July ?
  6. Does it? I doubt it, since that's against their philosophy of defragging only as much as is needed.

  8. I think they already unload the Aero UI when a game is started, because there's no performance difference (in FPS) with the classic UI and Aero.
  9. Yes, the recommended amount of RAM for Vista is 2GB, since Vista takes up more than half a gig by itself...
  10. Anyone know how to change the font smoothing behavior for a font at a certain point range? I want the Arial font to use font smoothing at 10 points. EDIT: Got it working! It looks wonderful: http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/9479/antialiasedve6.jpg
  11. Happy week-old birthday xper! Sorry we didn't wish you a happy birthday earlier (like when it was actually your birth date maybe).
  12. Not as interesting as an ATI CPU. Their GPU architecture is stream-based, meaning that you can gain as much as 4000% on certain applications (F@H).
  13. Well umm...a pocket hard drive's not exactly flash-based, is it ?
  14. We don't need to start a flame war for every Diskeeper update, do we?
  15. Now this is interesting...Apparently turning off Aero has no effect on gaming performance, so the rather dramatic FPS decrease is here to stay .
  16. Driver API has been changed, especially for graphics. There's a lot of significant changes, so it's entirely possible that it will lead to increased performance.
  17. x64 uses the Server 2003 codebase and certain programs will see it as a server OS.

  19. Anyone know of a free (preferably) Windows audio latency tester? The only one I found, by CEntrance, requires you to sign up for an account which they must approve .
  20. Storing files in the MFT will eventually fragment it. Since the MFT is not ordinarily defragged (only a boot-time defrag will), then the fragmentation piles up and performance can be much worse than FAT32. But the MFT also serves as an index of sorts, so if you do a lot of heavy directory work, then NTFS will be the preferred choice. Ultimately, it comes down to your needs.
  21. That'd be pretty bad to spend a few hundred bucks just for security...Not to mention that flaws can still exist in the code. Server 2003 had relatively few security issues because of a massive code review, but MS didn't have time to do the same for Vista...
  22. DirectX 10 is one of the main selling points for Vista (besides the Aero UI). Other than that, Vista is nearly identical to XP except with a few value-added applications.
  23. Nerocmd.exe (the command-line version of Nero ).
  24. I think that's what MS wants you to believe.
  25. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35110 Definitely means I'm not gettting Vista unless performance is noticeably worse.
