  1. You could use MBSA from Microsoft. This program will also let you know of any office updates that you might need, just need to run from your machine and download the files that MBSA shows that are needed. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
  2. Hi Jim, What jaclaz stated is good stuff. Make an image of the drive and work from the image. As far as recovery software I have used R-Studio for about 5 years and have been able to recover everything from a hard drive. The website for R-Studio is http://www.r-studio.com/ Good Luck John
  3. @ Ponch Yes laptop batteries typically only last about 5 years. This one seems to have been an exception rather then the norm. I always pulled the battery out when ever it was charged fully and just running on a.c. The only number I see on the battery that might be a manf. date code is this. 9 0907011021 @ PC_LOAD_LETTER Thanks for that info but this Compaq's BIOS has no battery diagnostics (To early). Thanks for the input. I've got another battery and charger board being shipped to me so hopefully I will know something soon. John
  4. Had a similar problem with a friends laptop earlier this year with the same symptoms. Upon checking the obvious power cords, power output from the power supply, my arm bumped the power cord going into the back of the laptop and the system shutdown. What this was was the power connector on the motherboard was loose/broken around the solder pads on the PCB. After replacing the power jack the system powered up and stayed powered with no problems. There appears to be quite a few laptops that experience this issue. John
  5. Hi all Recently my laptop battery has not been charging completely and may only get a 5 minute charge max. The charge light on the laptop stays on solid for about 3 mins. and then starts flashing in a pattern that would match a second hand on a watch. I purchased a new battery thinking ok this original battery is about 5 years old and has probably jumped ship. I received the new battery and I am still getting the same result, so I was thinking maybe the charging circuit board inside the laptop. Anyone have knowledge or experience a similar issue? The laptop specs are below TIA. John Compaq Presario 2720US 1.2G P3 512 megs mem XP SP3
  6. There's been several reports over on the Windows Home Server Forums regarding this issue and it appears that Microsoft is not having an issue (Lenient) with the reactivation. Some people have been going from OLD hardware (Testing) to NEW hardware without any problems reactivating by PHONE. Do a search on the forums for the info or ask there. NOTE: According to the EULA you are supposed to only install on the same computer as the original install was done. However as I stated above Microsoft is allowing changes. 7. I think it's a pretty good guess that PID is all over the torrent sites and with year dates ranging 2005 thru 2008 it is more than likely blacklisted. John
  8. If you can take a screwdriver and use as a stethoscope place tip on hard drive, fan casing or any other moving parts until you hear the noise the loudest. I have in the past had some fan troubles making strange noises, and I found that CAREFULLY pressing on the center hub on a flat surface the hub would pop in a bit and the noise was gone. john
  9. I'm not here to start a war regarding child rearing, but it's the PARENTS right and RESPONSIBILITY to keep tabs on their children. The program I use is TightVNC http://www.tightvnc.com/ this program allows you to watch other computers or remotely control them and it's free too. jd
  10. Well here's what I got even after clearing the cache. jd
  11. Comes up as $9.99 for me after I click "Secure Checkout". I of course did not click on "Checkout Now" after filling the form cause I don't need to purchase it. Did you get the message after actually clicking on "Secure Checkout" (1st step) or "Checkout Now" after filling your address, credit card info? I got $49.99 at both windows. 1st at the Buy Now, and then at the second window of the shopping cart. jd
  12. going all the way to filling the information out and then hitting secure checkout it still comes up at $49.99. so even following the link posted by spacesurfer it's not working. jd
  13. Had the same problem the other week. Uncheck the Malicious software tool and it should work. Link to the problem. http://www.msfn.org/board/The-remote-serve...or-t120533.html John
  14. Hi jcarle, Been trying unsucessfully since last night to get both x86 versions of XP to download. I'm currently using the latest WUD & UL's. The first one I tried last night was XP Post SP3 about 75% done and it stopped with an error. Tried again and all went OK with the SP3. This morning I tried with the Post SP2 list and again 95% done and it gives an error. So I think ok try the second time, and again it crapped out. I have no problems downloading from anywhere else on the net. Thanks John
  15. RJARRRPCGP I do believe what crahak has stated is where the problem lies at with the companies like HP, Dell etc. I have been running SP3 on 2 test machines and have not had a single BSOD. The machines are 1. AMD Athlon XP 1800 with NF7 MB. 2. AMD Athlon XP 3200 with a AN7 MB. John
  16. Bring back the Amiga's. You could do Windows, (Up to 98) with a hacked processor. And do McIntosh (OS 8) at the same time as running everything else without BOGGING the 68000 down. GREAT machines and I still run an Amiga 2000. Yes they ran with some REAL hardware emulation and by a set combination on the keyboard you could go between OS's. There is a picture of a guy running I think 4 different OS's on his amiga, I'll see if I can't find the photo. Here's a little wiki on the matter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emulation_on_the_Amiga A bit of hardware http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=345 John
  17. Hi everybody, Well I have started to do my yearly clean install of XP considering SP3 is out. But I am having some problems getting everything to complete and without errors. Below is a few of the items that are showing up as problems. I do all my installs using winnt32 as this way I can keep all my installs in one place and be able to modify one at a time or all at once. =========================================================================== System Errors Scan date: 6/25/2008 7:37 PM Scanned with MBSA version: 2.1.2104.0 Catalog synchronization date: Security update catalog: Windows Server Update Services Security Updates Scan Results Issue: Security Updates Score: Unable to scan Result: An error occurred while scanning for security updates. 18. No I didn't do the "next, next, next" 10 times I did copy the packages that were made from iexpress into 10 different install folders for my home network. And as you made comment to the update showing up in Add/Remove programs/Show Updates (YES it Shows) and none show up when you check for updates (NONE show up). John
  19. I am sorry that I didn't make that clear, she would only have access as a user, even though the main/only user. thanks I agree with the above comment. Setting her account up as user would be the best way to do it. Only problem is that alot of the software will have to be installed by an admin (yourself) as XP will not let programs install if they will install to the registry/system areas. I found this out on my sons computer (10 yr old) and he has only been given "USER" level account which is even more restricted thru the system for only certain times he can be logged on. Good Luck John
  20. I have been having the same issues with this update. Last night I tried iexpress with huge success. 10 of 10 installs installed this hotfix correctly and was checked using MBSA 2.1 with no updates to install. This program comes with XP, in the Start>Run box type iexpress. Follow the instructions below that were posted by homiebrah and the link to the page. http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t38566.html Download the patch. From the Run line, type in iexpress and hit Enter. 1. Click Next. 2. Click Next. 3. Type in a package title. 4. Click Next. 5. Click Next. 6. Click Next. 7. Click Add and navigate to the location you saved the patch. 8. Click the down arrow in the Install Program box. Select the patch. Then, at the end of the patch name, enter /Q. 9. Click Next. 10. Click Next. 11. Click Next. 12. Specify a location to the save the new file. I would use SVC-EXE. Check both boxes and click Yes. 13. Click Next. 14. Select No Restart and click Next. 15. Select Don't Save and click Next. 16. Click Next. The program will create the new file and save it in the location you specified. Click Finish when it is complete. Add this to your RunOnceEX and it will install fine at that point. Good Luck John
  21. Sorry JD74, I think It's still doing it only the cmd box is showing on the screen with c:\windows\Daemon\dt4122.exe. And at the same time in my vm window the nic card is showing as communicating the same time as the cmd window for appx. 30 to 60 seconds. When I take the daemon tools out this does not happen, so somewhere it is triggering the net to call home. Thanks jd
  22. johndoe74 I did a new unattended last night and I will have to agree that it is definately hitting the net. I was watching the network monitor while the unattended was installing, when it was copying things to the desktop it opened a cmd box with www.xxxx.xxx (didn't catch all) IE7 opened with Thank you for updating to the latest Daemon Tools. jd
