  1. The Metro core is even more useless since such capability exists -but were not exploited- on every Windows version since w98 (if not w95)! You can have a Metro like interface on w98 and above with an HTA application launched at start-up, played in full screen mode or without without border and caption. I could write a Metro interface in HTA in... what... 2 hours? Give me one hour more and I'll do a thing that will fool anyone into believing it's w8! But no, Microsoft is spending millions in coding this s***t, creating new code, raising uncompatibility issues etc... Another way to Metro-fied pre w8 Oses is Active Desktop. Not as close visualy, but it can be also very cool. I once had the TV programs summarized on my desktop, so that I can easily record or watch them (on the same computer). Instead of reinventing the wheel again and again, they'd better develop new stuffs on existing technologies. And that would fit on smartphones too.
  2. The management is going to terminate Microsoft Corporation as a going concern. Everything they do with Windows 8 goes to that direction. Next step will be removing True Color support, only 16 colors. LOL
  3. Looking at the comment on Sinofsky's blog, the verdict is unanimous: Metro will is a disaster. With all these negative feedbacks, they would be crazy to go ahead with that. They would face total incomprehension. Warning: the list of comments is realy huge. Not only they suck with their OS, they also do with their website.
  4. and _____________________ Amazing that we are still at the preview versions and coders already released patches to improve/correct it. It speaks volume on MS inability to realize what poeple want or wether they care of that. When the first Unofficial Service Pack for w8 Developer Preview? ______________________ __________________ MS has decided to turn computers into interractive TV. They signed at the same time the dead of the PC and the the birth of the shopping & entertainement console. (Note the "cart" tile on the Metro) And also the uniformisation of the interfaces. Wether you turn on a TV, a computer or a hand-held device you get the same screen with the same moronic suggestions about last products, fashion, new hits, weather and celebs. I'm positive that even single moms with kids will hate it. MS is very deeply underestimating the seriouseness of the regualar home users about their computer. Just listen to non-geek/tech-ignorant poeple around you complaining about things, not so ignorant and not so non-geek. IMO in the future, if you want to use your computer as a computer you will have to buy a version of Windows designed for serious, office works. Because I can't imagine that MS think seriousely about selling W8+Metro to companies and professionals.
  5. As soon as I see that there is an interface in existance looking like Metro* on my PC, I immediately ask for refund. (* or whatever the next "Bob" is called.)
  6. HI Duffy, I hope you will still hang around here for the fun of it. Too many poeple leave without a word. Everyone of us who is still not on dual-boot is facing the need for another OS. Not because other versions of windows are better, definetely not, but because it's the only way to get thinks working. For you, it's WiFi, for me it's interactive websites such as Facebook and Google map, the USB is also very slow on my PC (but I'v seen XP machine being dead slow on USB too), for others it will a scanner or a printer... Dual boot or having two computers linked with a KVM switch is the best option as you still can run w98 for the things that work fine, or to browse the internet safely. One thing I don't get thought, I don't want to start an OS flame war and honestly beyond w9x I feel no emotion about whatever you use, but technicaly why Windows XP and not Windows 7? Should I buy a new computer it would be W7. Once you get into the NT family, why not taking the last and most fixed platform? Wasn't XP support supposed to be discountined this year or something? I understand if it's a question of money, but else...? I promise if my PC dies and I buy a new one it will be kick-a** fast, up-to-date till the last second, but... ...I will also DISMANTLE WINDOWS 7 DOWN TO THE CHASSIS and make it the way I want it, with the same feel of speed and simplicity as in w9x.
  7. Yes: the 98SESP3 page is not a "how to back up w98" FAQ. It's only telling you to back up your system, and I added (I'm the author of this "important notice") the most basic way to do it, for poeple who have no time looking around on the internet for the best cloning solution still compatible with w9x. I wrote about that just so that poeple can't complain afterward that we let them in the blue about vague mention of back ups without giving a clue about how to do it. TBS, having a copy on a second HDD is a pretty safe way to back up w98. On a CD-R too. Partition cloning is only better. Yet I doubt it's faster. Maybe it's faster to copy under 32bit mode than DOS. That's the only difference I can see for a task which consists basicaly in copying nearly one Giga of datas. The other difference is that you can't have a functioning OS by just copy-pasting system files on a blank HDD. While you can have it by cloning. HTH
  8. FlipX A simple copy of the files on a CD-R/DVD-R or on another HDD, or on another medium is enough to restore 95% of your system. Remains the registry but a registry backup is also present among the files you will copy as a back-up. If your system files back up is not too old, it will be possible to restore a valid registry after copying all the files back. Then normaly 99% is restored. (Save 1% of unkowns.) Note that recopying the files back may have to be done through another OS (if any) or through DOS or through a boot Floppy or boot CD. All these methods may require some knowledge so take the time to look for the informations and how-to about the way you will restore/recopy your files in case of problem. Also read the IMPORTANT NOTICE on the u98sesp's webpage. There is a rapid summary on how to do this. Of course all other, more complete and more advanced methods presented by all the smart poeple here are also valid.
  9. Facebook is working again on w9x. Aparently there were problems for other users too. The anti-w9x conspiracy stretched to its limits?
  10. I don't know what the timeline is, I just know it's a new thing a few poeple have issues with. But I'v never seen it. Last time I checked on a supported browser Facebook layout sucked more than usual.
  11. Facebook became unusable on my w9x machine two days ago, neither in K-Meleon nor in Maxthon. I need to switch to the w7 laptop next to me. What a shame. Even on w7, Facebook managed to dance the Polka for one minute...
  12. - (Re)start in DOS and type "FORMAT C" Then follow the instructions. Attention: This command will entirely erase the all the datas on the hard disc C! Don't type it unless you are sure all these datas can be deleted. If you don't need several partions (or if you don't know what a partition is) and your hard drive is less than 128 Gb, it's easy. If it's more than 128 Gb, you still can do with a single partition but you need to read the post about using W98 on large HDD. (see this page on my website for a list of all important/interresting forum conversations about w98) - After you formated C (it takes about 1/2 hour), install windows. - Then install the drivers EXCEPT USB and USB DEVICE DRIVERS! - Install U98SESP - Install the other softwares that you need - Install USB drivers ONLY IF the USB devices don't work already. More details in the hundreds threads of this forum. Take you time to read... Good luck.
  13. I would second what j7n wrote above: Install NUSB and try again:
  14. PROB, could you test the download link? You don't need to download entirely, just look a few seconds how fast it goes. Thanks.
  15. For those who will download 98SESP3.exe, please use the second server (rapidshare) for the moment. The main server has speed issues. I doon't know if it's permanent or temporary.
  16. How much ram did you have when you got this error? Maybe one can try to find out the ram requirement for SESP3+MDAC... We can propose a second link to MDAC just to make sure it's not installed at the same time.
  17. Bear in mind that a memory cleaner can be pretty slow too. In my case it was almost faster to restart the PC than whiping the memory. I don't know how the INF scripts work but they should wait for one process to finish before starting the next one. That would be logical. Adding a wait command adds only an extra safety against lock ups. But with MDAC it's not a problem about that. The most radical way would be to install MDAC between two reboots.
  18. PROB' I'v uploaded a wait.exe where you know. I would add the wait command after an option (I mean a package) is installed and before starting the next one. But not between each of them. Only those who looks heavy or seems to slow down the process. I think there is a wait.exe present in more recent versions of windows but I'm not sure of that. There are also files named sleep.exe for the same purpose. Do not use the "ping" trick often mentioned on forums, and which consist in calling or pinging an IP address, because this method uses a lot of resources, even possibly 100% of CPU! I suggest to echo "please wait 4 seconds..." (if applicable) so that users know what's going on.
  19. We will soon be hosting 98sesp3.exe on the website again. ...with enhanced safety. PROBLEMCHYLD, check your PMs for more infos, please.
  20. Problemchyld, Just like that: Try to set a "wait" time (or delay) in the installation script. Maybe the computer needs a rest, or need to finish a task even if this task is reportedly finished. In DOS you can run wait.exe, a small executable which does only that. 3 independant versions here: http://www.createwindow.com/raewebsite/rae-watx.htm or '>http://www.petersen.de/content/contenido-4.6.4/cms/front_content.php?idart=163 or '>http://dpotter.net/technical/2007/09/utility-to-wait-for-a-process-waitexe/ I suggest to set a 3 second delay between each update. (you can't have fractions of a second unfortunately). As MDGX used to say: HTH
  21. I don't know if this was mentioned, ... Here is a good file recovery app. Works without KerneleX. I tried it only once and worked perfectly as intended where one similar software failed. ONGD - FREE - PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery 4.x http://www.pcinspector.de/default.htm?language=1
  22. Yes, finding new updates off non-MS OSes, would be awesome. But is it realistic beyond a few DOS tweaks? ______________________________
  23. CoffeFiend, What I mean is the phenomenon (rather than the thechnical evaluation) of poeple facing something new, which looks great and promising but without real application. Other important innovations like SATA, USB2, etc had immediate use. Why w3.1 if it's to launch only DOS softwares? Why x64 if it's to launch only 32 bit softwares? The move forward took much longer than merely a new piece of hardware which comes with a driver. In these two cases, the entire software and hardware industry had to update their products to make the innovation fruitfull. The concept of windows was not a hardware advance, but it forced the software industry to completely rethink the way interfaces are designed and adapt to a wide range of new possibilities, notably the use of a mouse. While not new when w3.11 was released, it was new for MS-DOS users, most "home users" at the time, GUI enabled computers were still rare high-end machines. At least for the PC world, there was a huge albeit gradual shift from DOS-launched, often mouseless and 2D apps to 3D windows apps. The x64 was not as visualy spectacular because an x64 PC looks like a 32bit one, but it was the first time in almost 10 years MS made a core change in the OS, along with a core change in the hardware (processor). 32 bit was so much the norm that you would be yawning at the mention of it. Today it's more exciting. Interresting link: A Short History of the GUI and the Microsoft vs Apple Debate _________________________________
