i like and use WinTidy 2.0 which is a PCMag freeware prog, i like it cause it's not resident (or at least doesn't have to be) it's kind of a follow up to iconlock mentioned above. tested lots of these kind of things in the past and settled on this one. eh, i just thought i'd mention it...
-
sorry, wasn't sure what it was,but didn't mean bring up "hacked" things again, i actually thought it was a 32bit rewrite of scandiskw (maybe should have gone with "3rd party" like Rhelic said) i will go read through all Petr's 137 GB post, i've not really encountered this problem myself, don't know why sometimes i think you dudes get to serious too quick when someones just mumbling y'know, chill dudes miko (Also willing to learn)
-
ahhh, i was going to post on this but see someone has beat me to it if these are going to find there way into the SP might i suggest a new "large disk package" option. Tihiy has not said that this scandisk addresses any of the concerning issues and imo alot of people will not have problems with the 137 GB limit as their existing partitions will be smaller than this. i 've made my views on unnecessary hacked file inclusion in the SP pretty clear previously and for much the same reasons as Rhelic. it seems much better suited (what with the skinning and added icons) to Tihiy's own ongoing projects. anyway just my 2 cents...

what about this -

well i don't know what we did, but i'm glad you got it fixed, tell your pal to drop by. yup !
-
i always refer to it as "9X" which is kinda correct as that's often what the 95-ME kernel is refered to as, also it reflects that DX9 is last version we can run and bumps nicely into XP, i have start menu banners with "Windows 9X Professional" on them

apparently 98SE does not properly install ACPI unless it recognises the motherboard, (and it has a very short list, it was primarily for servers at the time of release) you have to use a command line switch (/p j) on install to do it or alternatively - -------------------- REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Detect] "ACPIOption"="1" -------------------- before the motherboard 'inf' drivers install (you will have some extra options in Display Properties > Screen Saver > Energy saving features of monitor > Settings > Power Schemes & Advanced tabs if it is installed correctly) ACPI Steering is a solution to IRQ sharing not a problem itself. when you see 'ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI Steering' in System Information it doesn't mean the IRQ is shared with this 'ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI Steering' 'device' it means the ACPI BIOS is 'Steering' the other 'device' on that IRQ to use the IRQ it is on. the ACPI BIOS (and so all instances of 'ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI Steering') only uses IRQ 9 which is what could be sharing with the USB controller and causing a problem. not using ACPI on an ACPI board is a sledge hammer to crack a nut option. not using APCI disables a lot of dynamic tweaks that will make your system run better, like the HLT instructions i mentioned and the various priority tweaks that are specified here - http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm (note these aren't 'disabled' when ACPI is used, they're 'managed' instead and shouldn't be set) it can also affect the correct installation of modern motherboard devices when you get to the 'inf' drivers installs, especially on boards with tightly integrated multi-function components. but whatever floats your boat, on older motherboards, esspecally AMD supporting chipsets, non ATX boards & power supplies, and where the BIOS isn't up to par with the specs it's probably necessary. on my old all Intel PIII system it all works fine, only ever needed to disable USB Error Detection, but then i only have a USB gamepad, so it's not a big concern of mine. btw your link above is borked - http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm MS link on command line switches - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q186111/
-
apparently 98SE does do this if it properly installed on an ACPI BIOS i asked about it here - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=39650 but no one followed up some other links saying much the same thing - http://forum.iamnotageek.com/t-11618.html http://freespace.virgin.net/richard.amuzu/overclock.htm more can be found via Google with a decently aimed search http://win32assembly.online.fr/ down the page a bit, cpIce 1.12 (with source) btw these things are somewhat cpu & chipset dependant.

compatiblity with DOS, some other programs and older compile environments mostly (i'm heavily involved in emulation) that and it costs too much (home edition with SP2 296 USD i even converted it for you from GBP) i have other better things to spend money on than constantly upgrading stuff i don't need to (example - my sony TV is 27 years old) but your tech support, your bred to think a different way. i don't need files larger than 2 gig (i don't pirate dvds) i've never seen a corrupted file, ever (i don't overclock either) i play the odd game, i surf the net, i read my net based e-mail (btw for any others reading, 98SE can be installed without outlook express, easily, just use 98lite to extract the cab files and it 'corrects' the installer) i do these things one at a time, so generally don't need the enhanced muti-tasking ablity of XP. i have a firewall and dial-up and that does me personally, so security isn't a big issue either, i don't fileshare or haunt IRC so viruses are also someone elses problem, i've only ever seen one. the programs i do use, i don't need to replace nor do i want to (again the money thing) sometimes i fiddle with it when i have nothing better to do, a bad habit i picked up from my old Amiga/ST days. my icons are all self converted or altered from the XP ones and the colour scheme is also updated, i also wrote a new webview, so it looks up to date. as i know my stuff inside out i've only had 2 crashes in the last 12 months (i had to check my faultlog.txt for this), i know a bit about it cause i used to provided support for my brothers and moms PCs. there are 7 of us and i'm the oldest so i kinda fell to me (they all had their own PCs while living in the family home) so i guess maybe there's a sentimental attachment, all the other stuff mentioned in the thread as an advantage is largely irrelevant to me. i think i would maybe upgrade to win 2000, if i could find a cheap copy now it's older, but unfortunately it's dearer than XP. my system specs - an old faithful 200 Mhz laptop. old system 900 Mhz Celeron, Intel 815, 512MB mem new system (in the post) Sempron 3000+, Asus nForce 2, 512MB mem (this new 'core' cost less than XP) PS. the above system was bought with 98SE and MAME in mind, and was only bought at all because my old system bust a very short while ago because a fan failed on the graphics card and that then damaged the AGP interface. i have a 2 gig all Intel XP PC sitting in the corner, it's always on, is hardwired into MS UK through a dedicated connection, can't go anywhere else, it's remote administered from somewhere and sometimes i go to use it and it has all new stuff on from the last time, it has Office on it and is mainly used for video conferencing, needless to say it's my work PC so thats all i use it for, it doen't even belong to me, occasionally the printer bursts into life with stuff for me to do, i actually don't use it that much. i'm a people person my brother and mum, both use XP, moms is a stable Dell and is just used for e-mail and writing, my brother that still stays at home built his own, plays online games and it crashes all the time (go figure) one of the few things i don't like about XP is it doesn't really seem to tell you why. i have spent time on both machines and installed XP and SP2 on my brothers for him. i've read through the thread, best post was by jaclaz, some of the 9X zealots get into it to much, but we need a few people like that around to keep a 9X support forum a healthy knowledge base, much the same as any other forum you need those that are heavily "into it". some good explantaions of the pros and cons of XP are attempted, but after reading through it occurred to me that most 9X users dual boot with XP, and after reading some if not all of your posts i reached this conclusion - it's not us that hate XP, it's you that hates 9X. as you said yourself a few times, I don't care (which was odd for the thread starter). i don't need XP, i work with what i have, i have very specific personal reasons for doing that, as by the time Blackcomb hits and you all start looking backwards i'll have retired with several blocks of flats bought and paid for, supplying me with an income in excess of that which i make now, i'll be 40ish then and technically a millionare, at least that's the plan. right now i'm off to watch the rest of the Dambusters on TV...

ok, almost right, i got that, the "Super Moderator" bit, and i did read more than first and last, it's fair that my post wasn't a response to your first but instead was a response to some of those since, this forum here has been greeted with joy by many a win 98/SE user who has found it, but as an example, one user who was told three posts in a row to "just install XP" then said "somehow I dont feel so welcome in this forum any more." it's posioning a very good thing/idea (a windows 95/98/98SE/ME support forum) i will now go and read the whole thread from top to bottom, sir.

why are you here then ? i wouldn't go into an American football forum and start going on about why when only one guy kicks the ball is it called football, but then i'm not an arsehole. the forum title is - MSFN Forums > Microsoft Operating Systems Discussion & Support > Windows 95/98/98SE/ME > Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack not MSFN Forums > Microsoft Operating Systems Discussion & Support > Windows 95/98/98SE/ME > Please Tell Me To Buy XP

soooo, no one has an nForce 2 ? come on guys, i'm bored.

Intels own version of the driver ? i got one for an 536ep because of driver problems and as i remember it fixed the issues (i can't remember what they were though) or an maybe an IRQ assigment problem, check sharing and IRQs in System Information. if you have a lot of IRQ sharing going on, try disabling his com ports (and possibly any unused printer port as well) in the bios if if you need some IRQs, the PCI modem will have an onboard com port with some jigglying things about you can get it to be com 2 which is correct for a modem and you won't be using extra irqs, i think it might be the case as you said he only had one spare slot (now none). there maybe options in the bios which could help, like changing the PCI irq assignment from auto to manual for the PCI slots, even possibly moving the cards around in side the case (i know, it sounds dumb). i would try to get an internal modem on com 2 anyway in any case. (i use external now because of stuff like this, no com problems, no IRQs, no power draw on the PSU, and nicely portable with cool flashing lights wooooo) hope some of this helps miko.

this is just sad and depressing this is supposed to be a Windows 95/98/98SE/ME support forum (i think), yet all the time people pop up with threads that degenerate to "Upgrade to XP...loser" etc, people come here because they can't or don't want to, it's that simple. it's not like the majority don't know it (XP) exists. there are plenty of reasons for still using the 9X core on some machines, i've seen people tell others to install XP on machines which are way below the minimum specs for the OS (even a 486 once) which i can only call at best foolish and on the other hand its also foolish to expect a 9X system to support the very latest hardware and programs written for NT5 (XP). we still have DX9c, we still have .net, we still have 32bit PE files and we have an OS that's compatible with programs (and to a certain extent hardware) going back to the dawn of creation (as far as PC's are concerned) you (XP users) have a bit more (and in some ways because of the move to a full 32 bit OS in terms of reverse compatibility a bit less), well honestly that's all to be expected and there's not much point in picking at it. this kinda discussion here is getting really old fast (for me anyway), the mods here should start a "which OS is best" forum for the eejits that like to indulge in it, then at least we could throw Linux and MacOS into the pot and have a better quality and more interesting discussion. i personally think the reply "just install XP" and suchlike should be banned from this particular forum because its really not what the forum is here for (imo). The majority of the World does not live in the opulent "throw it away and buy the latest" society the North Americans (as an example) enjoy, as time goes no more and more people will come onto the net from the poorer places of the world, they will not be running XP and i'm dam sure they won't be running Longhorn, some will have free Linux, others older win OS's these people are the majority of the World they haven't even got a PC yet, when they do for the first time it'll probably be one that is "second hand". places like this will be god sends to them as they take there first steps. sound like sh*t ? well you might think so, but look around the forums, there are people from emerging economys like Brazil (also i notice India) and former Easten Block countrys, 15-20 years ago the idea that these people would have PC's would have been a dream and nothing more. most people will not download warez copys of OS's and will try to work with what they have or can afford, a 12 year old kid in Tanzania who's Dad has hauled a*s to get him a 486 & an external modem running win 3.11 might very well like to know he can install IE5, he might like even more if he had win 98 and stumbled upon this place or Gape's site or MDGx's, he will not be concerned about running office2003, imo he'll be more concered with what he can learn and who he can "talk" to. (talk of 486's may seem anachic but its just an example and imo you should not even be thinking about XP till your up to chip generations in line with the likes of a PIII + plenty of memory) the net has a purpose and it's not that people can have stupid arguments on it (believe it or not), we're here, we have windows 95/98/98SE/ME, according to the forum heading we're in the right place (and it's quite cosy here), please just let us be.

Hi All i've just bought a new windows 98 system core as my old Intel 815/900mhz died the new system core is as follows - 256MB 184DIMM PC2700 NP CL2.5 Crucial Technology X 2 AMD Sempron 3000+ 2GHz SoA 512KB (Barton core) Asus A7N8X-VM/400 nForce 2 SoA MATX A V L (i also got a Compucase 6920BUFW for £40 but that's not that important) came in at £150, which was good cause i was not expecting to buy an other system (btw as a rule i don't overclock, maybe later though...) budget AGP graphics card recommendations for 98SE would be be welcome, i was looking at a Radeon 9550 maybe, although generally i prefer Nvidia. (it was my GF4 Ti that died and took out the MB AGP port with it) soooo.... any potential problems tips in relation to this hardware? (obviously i'll be doing a fresh install with Gapes SP etc) miko.

info here - http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/icn_desk.html#icontext (some of the links are broken in the above link, but a creative Google search now you know what your looking for should produce results) there are some other (very small) apps around, most need to load at startup. various icon/themeing apps have the same function built in like Desktop Architect v2.11 (don't let it run at startup, and remove the non-working Display Properties extension dadesk.dll) which is one of my personal favs... hope this helps. miko.

98se is best for a PC that slow (Me is all bloat and no action) as for the XP dude, wtf are you doing hanging around in a Windows 95/98/98SE/ME forum, go away, your opinion is not needed or wanted.
-
i suspect that's your main problem, the card is overheating. send it back, it's faulty (probably)
-
Desktop Architect v2.11 (don't let it run at startup, and remove the non-working Display Properties extension dadesk.dll) there are others but this oldie is a goodie. i particularly like the startup/wait/shutdown logos used in this theme a readme.txt might be an idea. also it's missing the .avi for the screensaver (Bliss.avi 1.4 MB)

find the newest drivers you can for the card you have, install them. restart the computer (if not prompted to do so already). then make sure the graphics acceleration is turned all the way up - right click 'My Computer' > Properties > Preformance > Graphics slide the slider here all the way to the right, mmmkay ?. restart the computer (if not prompted to do so already). Right Click on the 'Desktop' > Properties > Settings select your required color depth & required resolution here. then Right Click on the 'Desktop' > Properties > Effects select 'Show icons using all possible colors' here. restart the computer (if not prompted to do so already). that should be it

use 'Find' to find the desktop.ini for my docs (you won't be able to otherwise), back it up then, then delete it. make a new one with this in it - [.ShellClassInfo] IconFile=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mydocs.DLL IconIndex=0 ConfirmFileOp=0 InfoTip=Stores your documents, graphics, and other files. edit the Iconfile= part to suit, 'Run' winfile and use it to make your new file 'Read-only' 'System' 'Archive' & 'Hidden' this will stop windows recreating the file desktop.ini and parsing the contents of my docs every time you open it (apparently). failing that tidy up, windows 9X will (apparently) slow down if there are high numbers of files in certain folders (the root of my docs and the roots of drives). it's been a while since i mucked about with this theory so if this doesn't work you have my apologies if it doesn't help any just reinstate the original more info - http://the-it-mercenary.com/forums/Help/posts/8929.html http://technology.januario.com/2004/09/win...lorer-slow.html
