  1. 2 nights ago Windows 9x/ME ForceWare Release 80 Version: 81.98 Release Date: December 21, 2005 U.S. English File Size: 11.7 MB International File Size: 19.3 MB Release Highlights: * Support for the GeForce 6 series GPUs * Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0c and OpenGL® 2.0 support http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_81.98.html any good ?
  2. http://www.phdcc.com/WDMarticle.html ?
  3. with some interaction, jv16 RegCleaner v4.3.0.780 is a more than handy tool. (personally i don't like 'deep' cleaners as most of them in my experience will delete stuff they maybe shouldn't) ccleaner is definitely a keeper though (but i don't count that wholly as a registry cleaner as such)
  4. well, i recently built a new system to stick 98SE on and went with a SoA Semperon 3000+ (Barton, 512KB cache) and an nforce2, but the ASUS motherboard was a bit iffy (not an nforce2 problem i stupidly bought a piece of returned stock on the cheap really dumb, a new one costs next to nothing now) so the system now runs on an ASRock K7VT4A Pro (which is an AMD recommended board), it's quite nice and cost peanuts. anyway that's a very cheap option, but its probably not the fastest. your initial idea sounds promising.
  5. i know, but OpenExpert is far more 'user frendly' imo.
  6. if you wanna get more advanced, OpenExpert ( http://www.baxbex.com/openexpert.html ) is one of coolest tools around. it'll let you open filetypes will multiple programs, so for example you could set it up so you can open graphic files in a viewer and an editor or music and video files in more than one player.
  7. this kind of thing - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=61806 ie the original notepad with a few useful hacks applied PS my vote went to Metapad, its what i've used for ages (that and the shareware Textpad)
  8. thanks, for the reply if thats correct, some of my free editors are getting it right, and it saves me some work. i may dowload that app to check out the output as there were some posts in the product forum (i was Googling) that go into the fact it outputs the correct image order. can't use it long term though as i have no means to pay for it over the net. still, i can analyze the output in the short term thanks again.
  9. i'm posting here (usually i inhabit the 9X forum) cause i though you lot would know the answer to this question, being, as you are, concerned with icons a lot - whats the correct image order in a windows (multi image) icon ? (it's for 98se but i assume its the same 'down the line so to speak) i'm thinking - 48x48x4bit, 32x32x4bit, 16x16x4bit - 48x48x8bit, 32x32x8bit, 16x16x8bit - 48x48x24bit, 32x32x24bit, 16x16x24Bit going on to 48x48x32bit, 32x32x32bit, 16x16x32bit in XP. is that correct ? (i've left 24x24 size icons out in this example) its just that some apps i've been using seem to save things differently (like all the 16x16s first then the 32x32s and so on . . . ) if i know the correct order i can correct my existing home made icons with @icon sushi many thanks any one who responds miko.
  10. yeah, i made the test icons myself (although the same thing occurs if i use any 'standard' ico from a system file), i've even tried different apps that'll save the image order inside an .ico file in a different order like 16x16x8bit, 32x32x8bit, 16x16x4bit, 32x32x4bit as opposed to say 16x16x4bit, 16x16x8bit, 32x32x4bit, 32x32x8bit (as an example) in case it was referenced by resource number internally by windows (btw this is what the minus numbers are in some icon entrys in the registry) the 16x16x8bit icon will only be displayed in the corner of a DOS box when theres no 32x32 image in the .ico file, otherwise (even if the colour depth goes against windows settings, i.e. it's only a 32x32x4bit icon and your icons are set up for 8 ,16 or 24 bit colour) a squashed version of the existing 32x32 image is presented.
  11. ok, i seem to post obscure questions no one ever answers but here goes (again) when you assign an icon to a DOS prompt (or a DOS shortcut) instead of using the 16x16 version version of the icon in the top left of the resulting window Win98SE always uses the 32x32 version squashed down to 16x16. does anyone know why this is (and possibly how to fix it) ?
  12. i'd second that, at least make it optional anyway. (pity the installer can't do an either/or function with 1.7 as default and 1.8 as optional) 1.7 is the most compatible imo (and many others). i know Gape knows this so why the change it ? don't upgrade for upgrades sake alone Gape ! i thought that was one of the ideals behind this SP (kinda)
  13. all you have to do is type (or cut and paste) MetaPad into Google . . . . http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/ http://welcome.to/metapad/
  14. well i built a system today out of bits i had lying around,(DFI K6BV3+ 66 MB, K6-2 333 (5x66MHz makes these stable btw), 256MB PC100, Guillemot 16MB TNT2, ISA SB16, Realtek NIC, 2x10GB HDs (1 Maxtor, 1 IBM), sony DVD rom and FDD) guess what OS is going on it, go on guess (yes i have that smug feeling right now, the one you get when all the LEDs work correctly 1st time, and there's no beeps or (worse) smoke ) i like having an OS i can install on more than one machine at once . . . . (yeah, yeah, i know, the licence etc )
  15. seem to work fine on my end (remeber hyperlinks don't work in the LE version) maybe your firewall is blocking the new version ?
  16. there are more Notepad replacements than you can shake a stick at (shakes stick) i like Metapad and was using it as Notepad 'drop in' before it was added to the SP (that and Textpad), but there's not much point in getting into it, as its going to be removed anyway as i understand it. just use what suits you best. the hacks are nice enough though (if that's what your after).
  17. mmmmm i don't own an XP disc nor would/will i
  18. try finding PowerStrip 2.78 before you try that, i used to use it to set custom resolutions and refresh rates on no-name mons ages ago, i can't remember exactly how though (it was ages ago ) but i know newer versions don't work the same, sorry i can't be of more help. PS. mind about your refresh rates, to fast will kill man old mon real quick.
  19. 2 questions . . . 1. whats the md5 on this ? and 2. are we likely to see a bugfix release (on the few reported issues) ? PS. thanks, great stuff as always, Gape.
  20. someone will probably mirror it shortly (someone usually does) at least i hope so . . . majorgeeks or something
  21. memload is a nice little free app (no CPU usage though) http://www.commontology.de/pub/adamant/
  22. you could check this guide against your BIOS settings http://www.adriansrojakpot.com/Speed_Demon...S_Guide_04a.htm especially 'Assign IRQ For VGA' = yes though i kinda suspect your PSU as mentioned above.
  23. that (ignoring the rest of the topic) is untrue.copyrights do expire. (afaik on work produced after January 1, 1978, 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter) also it worth remembering that national laws do not apply everywhere (stated example is under US law). http://www.piercelaw.edu/tfield/copySof.htm as for the rest of the topic seems like reinventing the wheel to me but them thats been done before sooooo i dunno, but i ain't gonna jump on anybody.
