    New Games

as far as games go 98SE can pretty much do anything XP can (DX9c, OGL & .net etc), and i suspect it'll stay that way up until DX10 (or what ever they eventually call it) on Vista. gotta face it though, most development machines now will be running XP and like has been said, it's mostly the extra testing that they can't seem to be bothered with (time is money etc) NT only games (sigh) who'd 'a' thunk it...
  2. shutdown logos are not animated. startup (boot) ones should be. (imo it helps you see if the computer is still booting or not) as for how it's all about palette manipulation and a little hex editing. http://www.xrx.ca/logoutils/ has what you need download the Animated Logo Utility if you want to get creative, that and a good art prog, i find PSP is best for palette work myself. or just use AddBar if you want to, er, add a bar you can read a little tutorial here - http://www.nucleus.com/~kmcmurdo/win95logo.html
  3. if you have look at this - http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm and compare the number in the location i told you you'll get what you were after nailed so for example '4.10.2222 A' for 98SE (although it also says 'Second Edition' in this case btw) there are other methods on the linked page as well.
  4. Right Click 'My Computer', Select 'Properties' Should be right there under 'System:'

    New Games

well yeah, i raised an eyebrow when SA came out. afaik it's the first big game to go XP only, i have the other 2 and they run great on 98SE. there's not much we can do if the manufacturers are going to drop it. it doesn't really bother me that much as i'm a 'retro gamer' i have loads of games installed i've yet to complete and i'm also into emulation (about 25 different systems and 1000's of games) i could be playing till i'm dead without buying anything new. it's not all bad, in this months issue of PC Format (UK) Dungeon Keeper 2 is No2 in the 'Management' (God) games recommended top 5, just behind The Sims (as it has been for ages), this is probably my all time favorite game but afaik it just won't run on XP. i actually class systems by Direct X, my current system with 98SE is my DX9 box, all components are compatable and capable. when DX10 comes out and the specs are outlined i'll probably upgrade (OS included) but i will probably aim to have that system 64bit with a 64bit OS. so now i won't be buying GTA:SA till then so Rockstar will be getting about a fiver out me then instead of the £35-40 they could have got out me now...
  6. well my soundblaster 5.1 digital driver is WDM, and works fine, maybe its an implementation thing, there are some previsos on WDM use in 98SE i just can't remember what they are i think having a correct ACPI installation might have something to do with it.
  7. WIN98SE shares the WDM (Windows Driver Model) with Windows 2000 (NT5) that's about as far as it goes, in saying that it is quite signaificant, afaik no other 9X OS (except maybe Me) does some reading (pulled from Google) - http://www.gdcl.co.uk/wdmdetails.htm http://www.phdcc.com/WDMarticle.html Windows 98SE drivers are not all 16bit, remember it's a 16/32 bit OS not just 16bit, but then in some ways thats what makes it such fun. as for motherboard drivers, yes 98SE will use generic ones if you don't go and download the right ones (usually called motherboard 'inf' drivers) from the manufacturer, which is exactly the same as XP does. XP will however contain drivers for chipsets produced up until its realease 'out the box' as it were, 98SE is the same only it came 'out the box' quite a while ago so now doesn't recognise most of what it 'sees' without a downloaded driver (or two). none of this is relavent to this thread i think goes off to play some DOS games
  8. IE6 on 98SE is the one i really wanna know how to change, the IE7 beta is interesting because it's still there despite a virtual rewrite of the whole browser
  9. B) how did you change it ?
  10. this is a pic of the top left corner of IE7 in common with all versions of IE it uses a 256 colour icon to represent the open page, this icon is not the link icon or the html/htm page icon but it comes from somewhere else. can you slove the mystery of IEs 'lost in time' icon ? where does it come from ? why does it never change/grow old ? can i/we possibly change it to a better looking one ? any insights would be much appreciated (bugged me for years this has)
  11. the truth is it's relative, in a corporate enviroment 98se isn't considered secure. if your pc is always on and connected to the net, then it's probably not secure (although you can greatly help things with the likes of a hardware firewall and other things so i'm led to believe) but, if you use a modem, have a good firewall/antivirus/anti-spyware/anti-trojan and switch your PC off when not using it (to help the enviroment or your electricity bill ) then it's probably as secure as you need it to be. trojan/worm fodder ? well that really depends on what your doing with it, i never use file sharing programs or download things (including e-mail attachments) the origin of which i'm not 100% sure about, i've had one virus problem since 98se came out, and afaik i've never been hacked. think of it this way, we could all drive around in armoured cars, but we don't. PS. install 98lite once (even if you have no intention of using it) use it to extract the 98setup files to a folder on your hard disk, preferably a different partition (in my case the folder is only 121mb) format C (or whatever) and install 98se from this folder, the advantage ? well apart from a really speedy install 98lite fixes the standard installer so you can install 98se as normal but with the option to not install Outlook Express thereby getting rid of a big problem right there. this has nothing to do with doing a '98lite install' and is actually a bug fix to an option MS was ment to include. if you use web based e-mail (hotmail, gmail, etc) you won't even notice it's gone. PSS. a good hosts file and Firefox helps strip spyware problems to a minimum. if you use spybot switch to advanced and use the Hosts File option, or use a tool like HostsMan.
  12. http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=50561 don't know much about this myself but it looks like there might be 98SE ones already if thats what you mean, other than that no one around here will be stealing anything (well maybe mitchellovision & dirtwarrior, but no one else dammit)
  13. anytime a critical update like this one appears on windows update type the KB number into the advanced search at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp 9 times out of 10 there will be a downloadable version for system admins at least until 98SE support runs out (sometimes there's a day or two 'lag')
  14. assuming i have all the auto updates for IE6 (on 98SE) from windows update, which other things should i have which might affect its performance/compatiblity ? i mean like database, scripting, XML, those kinds of things.... (do you a have a page on your site on this MDGx ? (if you happen to read this)) any links/previous threads covering this just point me at them
  15. different (larger) thing, there are a few extensions that will do that, still i suppose someone might find it useful...
  16. i found a sweet little (32kb) dll that adds XP's 'open containing folder' option to items returned by the 'Find' tool in Windows 98, i don't know about you but i use 'Find' a lot and this is the only thing i like about what i've seen of XP's 'Find'. now we can have the same handy option too this is a free C++ code example by byblos (source available) it comes from here the only thing i didn't like about it was the lack of Capitalization (which the XP version has) which, i thought, made it look slightly out of place on the right click menu. but 2 seconds with a hex editor solved that, i also changed the 'keyboad indicator'/shortcut key from 'n' to 'i' in line with XP so if your as picky as i am rename and use the "MODIFIED_" one. ORIGINAL - 'Open containing folder...' MODIFIED - 'Open Containing Folder...' to use - drop in 'system' dir and register the dll FoundInFolder_demo.zip
  17. [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\FList\command] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\command.com /c dir \"%1\" /a-d /b /s|sort>C:\\WINDOWS\\DESKTOP\\FileList.txt" this should do the other thing (FileList.txt to the Desktop) also, about the printing a directory contents, it's possible ">prn" might be able to be used instead of ">FileList.txt" rather than that external batch file solution (someone would have to try this as i don't have a printer )
  18. the folder you do it to, so if you right click on the icon on the top left corner of a folder called E:\SOMEFILES\SUBFILES and select 'Create File List' FileList.txt will be created in E:\SOMEFILES\SUBFILES
  19. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\FList] @="Create File List" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\FList\command] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\command.com /c dir \"%1\" /a-d /b|sort>FileList.txt" doesn't list folders only current folder contents although you can change that type dir /? at the DOS prompt and change parameters to suit yourself bug (kinda) - be aware that it always includes the FileList.txt in the list, if done from the current folders icon (top left of a window) rightclick. figured it the other night, no biggy, just thought some might find it handy.... edited - revised after some good input from ack-h
  20. hey, any chance of a link (or a pm) to where you got 9x 61.84 drivers ? i been using 61.21 WHQL and would like to try them out
  21. i think so, i know this - 1. you can't use them both at the same time (webview & thumbnail view) 2. it uses thumbvw.dll i've wondered if later versions of the dll would any any functionallity before but never tested it out that much, i have it enabled on my stock "my pictures" folder that ie creates but generally only use it otherwise when i'm working with images, it does a lot of file types (i think all those ie can) though including gif, html, & url (if you let explorer.exe connect to the net, which i personally don't)
  22. eh, you can enable thumbnail view in 98se by right clicking on a folder and Properties>Enable Thumbnail view (reopen the folder and you'll have the option in the view menu) and it looks just like that screenshot above
  23. i assume that's the wrong way round ?PS. i tried this Me file but it adds an unused system restore function in one of the tabs so i decided to add oeminfo.ini to the system folder - does...
  24. i've pretty much tested all Nvidia drivers on 98se over the years, so have a pretty good insight on this 45.32 are imo best for 4 series cards (they're what i used on my gf4 ti and my gf4 mx (nforce2 igp)) get them from Guru3d.com hth miko. PS. thanks for the heads up MDGx i tried out 71.84 out but they made Startopia almost all black so went back to 61.21 WHQL, i'll give these a try on my gaming install... (GeForce FX 5700)
  25. time to switch to decaf ?
