    98lite

the Preview/demo is enough for most people . . . http://www.litepc.com/preview.html as for getting it to work . . . install it (just install it, don't go further) and read the 98MANUAL.TXT.
  2. it might make the grippers disappear (like on the explorers toolbars) which is one of the reason i was looking for a tweak. i like looking for obscure interesting registry tweaks, and i'm convinced there are maybe one or two things with might work in XP and 98se if you can 'fill in the gaps in the registry' and turn them on (think of the number of XP files in 98se now) not big things but maybe just a few interesting tweaks (like i said) and/or enchancements. for instance i was going to try adding a custom webview for th 'My Pictures' on 98se at some point. if the XP has a clsid it could be created as a system folder etc i'm not great at HTML and that but i've done ok so far with stuff like that. the details of the different ActiveX controls in 98se are obscure now and the kodak imaging might be able to be used either that or just the image manipulated in HTML and javascript (stretch, next file etc on/off with a 3/4 window preview or something) just simple stuff. anyway i ramble, just dumb ideas to keep me busy. anyway i've been unable to find out if 'My Pictures' has a clsid (which ideally is the way i'd like to approach it) so its on hold (dumb idea probably)
  3. i was Google-fu ing around looking for old interesting registry tweaks and came across this link Link (btw this option is present when using Tihiy's Windows 98 Revolutions Pack Lite) notice several of the posters say that they have the option on their windows 98 install already, now i've tried the registry tweak and it doesn't work (for me) anyone have an explanation (or aware of the qualifications for this menu item to show up) i think the ones who have it might be running the Active Desktop but thats just a guess . . . thoughts ?
  4. see now, that could have been your first post in the thread. it might be curt but at least its an explaination.
  5. i think the term your looking for is 'irreverent'. and all of you calm the down. flaming, personal abuse etc is not tolerated under the forum rules. and to be honest i think Plugs7 (and therefore eidenk i suppose) has a point. the simple fact is went something like this arises the 'product' should be pulled or fixed. Tihiy made it, so Tihiy should be able to explain why the entry's there, it's not rocket science. Gape could show you why each part of the SP2 exists likewise MDGx with 98SE2ME. Both would deal with a situation and a complaint post like this in a completely different manner (and anyone whos been around the board awhile would recognize that) all Tihiy is showing right now is a real lack of comparable class. if it needs to go further (sigh) a (calm) PM to the senior MSFN admins and a click on the 'report' button under several of the (less than helpful) posts here might be more productive in spurring some more positive action from the forum member involved (rather than him purely being a smart a** in reply to legitimate complaints) that is if he wants MSFN to continue to promote his 'work' by stickying it in the forums.

MDGx continues to refine the first (rather amateurishly done on my part) .inf nice!
  7. better get the Canadians to stop electronically reading all your e-mails for your goverment then. it's pointless, it's long gone.
  8. well i ran the setup on a spare install, it simply extracts to a program files folder with a link placed on the desktop (i assume to install files) i've not installed it yet (i probably won't as i'm working on some theming stuff myself just now) as far i can see it contains - hacked Browseui.dll for altering the toolbar and an explorer.exe with XP icons my XPish boot logo the w2kcolours theme.inf these are all packaged in the .exes xptoolbar.EXE, xpexplorer.EXE, xpbootlogo.EXE, w2kcolours.EXE something called XPIRaider.exe (for installing icons) something called 'bootdisk - WIN98.EXE' (?) a few other tiny files i assume are involved with the installation process - ulimatexpdreamtheme.exe (this is 4MB ish, maybe the installer ?) Uninstal.exe CD_Start.exe Autorun.inf Start.txt ico.ico xpextreme.gif win98.gif DARK SANCTUARY Enter The Realm. (internet shortcut) D&R PC SOLUTIONS (internet shortcut) Thumbs.db (?) smokeyjoint Inc. Read me!!!!.nfo CD_Conf.ini xp.bti (this is a bmp of button states i assume for use by the installer) exit.bti (this is a bmp of button states i assume for use by the installer) and a folder called 'sound' with 4 .wavs in it (id guess 3 are for the installer the other is tada.wav) PS. almost forgot places a folder in the start menu as well, with 2 links 1. XP EXTREME pointing to CD_Start.exe (the desktop one points to this too) so on second thoughts i don't know what ulimatexpdreamtheme.exe is 2. Uninstall XP EXTREME FOR 98SE pointing to Uninstal.exe

Whatever!! What a jerk to say something like that. I simplied asked about Windows 3.1 and the if there is a will there is a way would apply to almost anything. So just STFU while you are at it!! personal abuse is against the MSFN forum rules you receive one warning then a instant ban. you obviously decided to ignore the part about it being a joke much like you've ignored most of the informed replys in this thread you insist in dragging out into you continuing vendetta against windows 9X inside the 9X support forum, your on very thin ice i would shut up if i were you if you wish to be able to continue to visit the nLite forum you seem to like so much. ends.

Link21, i think when i finally invent a machine to kick people in the balls via the internet not only will i make a fortune but you'll be the first to know. note to any passing mod - i'm trying to be polite and that was ment as a joke.
  11. yes 98 does, for most things, still. (and is a 'good' (as in its time and adequate nowadays) OS imo) it doesn't supprise me that people are still using it, to a lot of people PCs are just a tool. PS. i'll probably buy 64bit Vista eventually (SP 2 or 3) or possibly even OS X
  12. why not you try doing it yourself ? download the package, figure out how to extract the icons use a tool like IconShop to convert the icons (possibly packaging them into an .icl (icon library)) and something like Icon Phile or Desktop Architect to make a theme i'm sure MDGx's site has some good apps on it also if you have a look. Win98SE can take up to 24bit icons (thats true color with no 8bit alpha channel) IconShop will convert a 24bit bitmap into 24bit image which can be exported as an 24bit icon if you load it into the program (just make sure the background/transparency colour is set in IconShop before you do it)
  13. i have a possible hot tip from a french forum make sure the infra-red (com ?) port is deactivated the bios (? does that make any sense to you ?) link disabled AGP Fastwrites in the BIOS (?) i know this setting can cause problems on some system from personal experiance link heres a guy who had overheating problems (which you've checked for) his system is almost the same as yours (except you have more 'stuff'), check his PSU size (just out of interest) . . . link windows 98SE RAM timings problem http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/showth....phtml?t=124674 i will post any more things i find (had much better returns yesterday night but i think i was searching with K7VT4A Pro entries). thats me for tonight, like i said i have a vested interest in this, so i'll probably look again for more stuff later . . . . hth. PS. AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT consider investing in a high quality high power PSU, it is one of the most important components in the whole machine and people almost always underestimate its importance. you can justify the cost due to fact that A. they are not actually that expensive and B. if you buy wisely they will outlast full system upgrades (3 full MB & case changes on my current one for example) as high a wattage as you can afford but thats not the only thing thats important you want 'cleanliness' of the power as well. ie voltage and current regulation this is the kind of thing
  14. the colour themes nice enough i suppose, the startup logos not a patch on the original (jk)
  15. sounds like an interesting little project, i look forward to your screen shots, used to own several Amigas (and STs - boo hisss etc ) this is the place you want to visit to find out the stuff your after - http://wint.virtualplastic.net/ you might be able to get a lot of nice stuff (wallpaper, icons) from Amiga emulation sites. the other 'hacks' should be possible, don't know about the getting rid of the taskbar, beyond what you do now other than possibly using another shell instead of explorer. btw have you seen this - http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/art_amiga.html
  16. these boards have low quality power circuits they need better quality power to function as well as they can do. (i have one sitting behind me in its box right now believe it or not (well a K7VT4A Pro) so have a vested interest in whether you sort this out or not, it's my spare incase my nforce2 goes belly up, i thought i'd buy it before SoA disappears of the market place) with that many addons you should be running at least a good quality 400W PSU if not more (especially if you want to upgrade your VGA at some point). if the memory test comes up fine try removing all extras from the machine (CD roms, extra cards etc) just leave the on board NIC, the VGA and the hard disc see what happens from there as you add stuff back on, of course of you have a 480-500 Antec PSU (or such like) you shouldn't have any problems in that department. what size/make of PSU did you buy ? people have reported much the same problem as you (seach Google) most answers seem to revolve around 'do you have enough power ?' as for your IRQs, the VGA card should be on 11 by itself for maximum stablity (how you manage that is often tricky). could you post another shot of your 'IRQs' from System Information tool ? eidenk has covered most other possiblitys fully (BIOS update, memory test etc). could chipset drivers possibly be an issue eidenk ? which version are you using dtamonis ? i personally would ignore the Board manufacturers site downloads (after reading it and looking about (Google) for any specific issues) and go for the Chipset manufacturers when doing an install on a new board, working backwards (through the versions) if any issues arose. Latest VIA 98SE Chipset drivers btw it is possible (from what i've read) a few of these boards are just 'bad'. although i take it you know this is an AMD recommended board (there aren't that many) . . .
  17. overheating ? power supply not up to the job ? IRQ conflict ? could be any of the above.
  18. working on a (modification/hack free) solution for that (probably be the last thing i do on the OS) all the work is done, it's just the building the install that's taking me time (i'm old and slow). . . horror storys, sorting out nforce2 resource conflicts was pretty bad i suppose. accidentally shift-deleted my 'FORGE' folder (where i keep my projects) once during a spring clean that was a nightmare . . . however most of the good (imo) stuff i re-did better than before. i'm mostly a retro (and emulation) gamer so this OS does me (again, i'm old and slow), i have no plans to upgrade till theres 64bit everything and an advantage in having it. as you say currently it 'gets ya from point a to b'
  19. i know sorry timeless (for a dumb post) (compatiblity is in the hands of the developers if they want to/care use it, its just a pity more don't)
  20. you need a app like transicon download here (its a 9kb exe) - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html just put it in a folder and put a shortcut to it in your StartUp folder in the Start menu (in the case of this one with "TransIcon.exe on" command line switch) there are others (search the forums) but this seems the smallest and i like tiny apps. (btw an install of Desktop Architect 2.11 (an old windows 98se theming app i pimp a lot) will do the same thing (via a cpl extension) and get rid of shortcut arrows . . .)
  21. imo its always best to test your anti-virus scanning engine with the eicar test 'virus' http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm just stick its various versions in a folder and 'expect a hit' during a scan.
  22. there's a new Cumulative Security Update for IE6 SP1 (KB896688) avaliable, it's maybe of interest because it contains (unlike the previous ones) new DirectX Media files . . . theres also KB904706 (which is up on Windows Update just now) a Security Update for DX 8 & 9 (with separate downloads for each) i got the 98SE ones but i expect theres downloads for WinMe as well. all these are now up on the v4 catalog site http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp (went up 2 days behind the Windows Update posting btw)
  23. still can't figure out how to create the shortcut, but i've checked (i run 3 side by side installs of 98se on different partitions) and a My Computer shortcut is binarily (sp ?) the same every time it's created (in all 3 installs) so i'm just going to include and copy into position during install, i think i might have the change to read only thing cornered now as well. . . it would still be nice to know how to create a 'My Computer' shortcut form inside an inf file if anyone knows how. (more 'professional' i think, plus one less file to include)
