  1. CONS: 1. already-stated glacial desktop load at startup 2. my computer shows no web folders, though gmail drive is there... 3. cd drive labeled "compact disc" PROS: a ton of them: explorer's different settings are much improved..... everything is much faster.... here's an improvement over 98: I personally always chafed under the 15 max recent doc shortcuts in start/documents-- now you can set that # to as much as you wish: for current user only: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ Explorer] for everyone: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ Explorer] if there isn't already a value called: MaxRecentDocs create a new DWord value with that name & exact spelling(you can copy/paste) & whatever number you wish. ..you can even use this to shorten the number shown(default is 15) or eliminate them altogether! And do yourself a favor, do it with this app(you'll see why): http://www.vsft.com/regexp/ If you have X-Setup you can perform this from within it as well.
  2. go here & scroll to the bottom, you'll be able to do it instantly(it's not what you think either): http://texturizer.net/firefox/themes/index.html#install
  3. Yeah!!!!!! Come on Tihiy & pull through for us-- yet again!! We know you'll be able to install it in our new SpaceShip OS!!!!!!!!
  4. Ok-- finally worked: the trick was editing that second Millshell-- not the first one! Everything is much faster-- really: both OS interface, browsing / page loads.... BBBBUUUUTTTTTT............... one very bad thing: startup--- the desktop takes forever to refresh; the icons all appear at once, but then they glacially change over from the generic windows........ I do btw, have max icon, folder, patch cache settings enabled. Correction: i did before have the shdoc401 dll's, and the reason they had a folder icon is because i'd applied a reg patch so that they'd show their embedded icons... i think it was an MDGx tip. I would recommend the shell change to everyone-- be sure to extract those inf files to that same winme directory. I can put up w/ the slow load at startup-- though hopefully there's a fix for it. I took a great risk by not cloning windows-- if something happens, MDGx says win98 wouldn't install to that same directory.... but i had faith in Tihiy run this app w/ the following switch : xxcopy32 /clone http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm Good show, Tihiy!!! Go for it, everyone!!!!!! OH, i used copylock to replace the relevant files & delete the needed ones all at once: http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc and X-teq Com Register Ex to register the other everythign all at once too: http://www.xteq.com/downloads/xq-comregisterex.zip DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. i personally don't know, but you won't get much sympathy with the cheap + warehouse + 4-stores all in the same equation: rightly or wrongly, folks'll likely figure your boss will not be much better off having saved a couple of dollars-- may be worse off dollar-wise in fact: should pay a consultant to recommend something, everyday you guys go w/o that needed software is costing extra in man-hours anyway....AAANNNNDDDD: will (s)he grant you enough brownie points & will whoever takes time to pen a reply get a commission? I'm not trying to insult you: i sincerely hope you find what you need & promptly as well.
  6. I have an even better one for you: send up to 1gb at a time, no registering-- not even give a mail address(though you'll likely want to for your recipent to reply-- though you can also attach a text message of any length), no maximum caps/quotas, no nothing-- i've used them for about a year now: http://s13.yousendit.com/ and something a bit different: streamload has once more a free plan: 10gb storage(only 100mb monthly download though): http://www.streamload.com/Account/Pricing.asp & the converse: 30mb has free web hosting w/ unlimited bandwidth-- but only 30mb space: http://www.30mb.com/ hhhmmmm..........
  7. beats me, shaddam!!! btw i noticed the office23K disc comes with the 2k sp4 update-- maybe that's a clue... MS is again shipping to anyone requesting, a 360 day trial of the Pro version-- standard & most of its standalone components, can be freely downloaded: i suggest everyone take them up on it: http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx
  8. That's very nice-- & one/two of those degrees are attributable to MM itself.... I range 36-43... i've got dual fans in (lower)front, one on (upper)side, one pci-slot exhaust over the vidcard, one fan in (upper)back reversed... mobo stands vertically against right side. Asus 2GB 400Mhz DDR RAM Pentium4 2.4(slightly overclocked) Sapphire ATI Radeon 9200 128Mb 4 hard disks 7200rpm: WD, Maxtor, Seagate 40-120gb dvd, burner(yes, uata cotroller card<g>)
  9. Hi, welcome. That suite has had conflicts with some other apps. 1. Try first installing it in Safe Mode AND then uninstalling while in that mode. 2. Open JV16 Power Tools: run its Registry Tool, and write down any other names used in the titles of all apps associated with Soundblaster & Creative(there may not be any others). 3. Disable ALL security & file protection/scanning apps--windows/third party: firewall, AV, innoculators(spybot innoculator, spywareblaster), spy blockers(spywareguard, etc.), system/real time file protection, restore, file indexing(huge resource hog anyhow!), all Norton / Disk Doctors/Utilities. AND ensure this thru task manager / services / whatever, for the duration of this process: thru reboots, etc. 4. Attempt uninstall again. 5. Run a Registry Repair utility(but do NOT allow auto-fixing)-- Spybot has one, though primitive: Tools / highlight System Internals / click Check for Problems. Better ones are Registry Mechanic, Registry First Aid, Norton Utilities has one also... Note: Registry First Aid: http://www.regnow.com/softsell/visitor.cgi...ite&vendor=9085 and others have trial downloads that would suffice for this. Once you run the app-- you're going to Manually fix errors, only the ones dealing with this suite-- from among a choice of solutions offered: do NOT accept delete & look instead for any like "shortcut/path pointing to wrong location"-- the fix will usually be to correct something in the path or folder name; accept that & don't accept any obvious mistakes like when it says a file is missing and wants to point to a file in another program's folder. Re-boot. 6. With steop 3 apps disabled, attempt uninstall. 7. Manual Time & also do even if step 5 worked(to preclude future problems, as there've been issues w/ security apps & we don't know which of its files possibly left behind could make problems again): Boot into Safe Mode. 8. In Device Manager or other System Reporting Tool: make a note of how many sound devices & codecs are installed, and have ready at hand the disc w/ your sound drivers / hard drive folder containing any updated ones. 9. Do Finds in both Registry(first please), then hard drive: for Soundb*, Creat*, & in a similar style for any other words from step 2. The reason we're using partial word w/ a * is because they may truncate their naming of files, and not all will be located in the home folders. Of course, you're gonna use your judgment: if you also have programs called Sound Bookie or Creative Cracker, you will have to determine who is whose. When in doubt, experiment by re-naming temporarily. Now, if i possessed the Creative Suite, i could find this out & save you steps 2 & 7...... 10. This process'll likely also excise your sound-- no biggie: upon re-boot Windows'll likely re-detect all missing components, which you'll double-check against the list from step 7. Good huntin'.....
  10. Awesome work Wai_Wai-- actually awesome's an understatement: any publication should be willing to pay good bucks for such a piece.... Actually you do do that already likely....? I'd be curious of your opinions on the AV in Etrust, the suite with ZA & Pest Patrol in it? The AV used to be standalone-- Dr. something(Solomon maybe, also perhaps started out in the Mac platform originally...) Thank you.
  11. I think that all hard drives come with bad sectors-- right straight from the manufacturing plant-- though small in number and marked off: there is no 100% perfection on this planet<g>. We don't get cheated on capacity, btw, because to being with it's larger to compensate... So i wouldn't be concerned with having a few, but if they seem to be increasing... And i think that today's drives w/ S.M.A.R.T technology are a godsend(make sure it's enabled in Bios) compared to their predecessors: http://www.storagereview.com/guide2000/ref...turesSMART.html Some will say that this technology ain't much help-- heck, it can't hurt; and it's well appreciated from someone who once suffered unexpected disk failure(some circuit on the disk's board burned out). That burned circuit years ago prodded opening the case and peering inside in spite of the usual admonishments & total lack of knowledge-- and what an eyeful: we consumers treated computers so shoddily, and system configurators were so cavalier in their design and building-- it's a wonder computers even ran at all. Inside the case-- one inch of crud on the bottom, dust covering everything, no extra fans anywhere-- & the ones for the psu & processor almost totally obliterated with gunk-- in almost air-tight cases. What's heinous is that most metal shells have designs/holes in place for plenty of fans and airflow-- then along comes the systems seller and covers everything up with a pretty exterior that usually blocks most holes/vents. Even nowdays with plenty of talk about case design & modding re proper airflow / lowering temps, using extra fans for the video card and elsewhere: there's very little talk about front fans for the disk drives-- and though there are exteriors with plenty of vents around, they often don't include front vents to match the ones in the metal shell. So I now take the following miminal steps to protect the hard drives(yes, plural-- eveyone should have 3 or more...more on this later), which i think are the most important component, maybe the only important one: i don't care if whatever else melts down, as long as all the data is safe(Even if i'm broke and have to prostitute/sharmuta myself to get a new one-- i'll do it with a smile-- knowing i didn't lose any data): 1. I drilled plenty holes in all the computers, and installed front fans in the slots already present for them in the inner shell, as well as other fans where necessary, including an extra exhaust fan in the back. 2. I planned ahead for failure already. I expect that one day one of the hard drives will fail suddenly-- either of its own fault, or from some power surge in spite of appropriate protection in place. So, I have at least two identical models of each hard drive-- something happens to one: the circuit board, etc. can always be swapped out for INSTANT data recovery. I have not spent any extra money for this: none of the drives are sitting unused(not necessary) / have not bought more than needed, AND they came cheap: there are plenty of specials around for 40cents a gigabyte or less. Now, when a failure arrives, likely after the drive model is no longer made, & also taking into account the falling prices of all components, i'll not be paying the price of two or three drives at some online auction, and double that again for immediate shipping-- only to find upon arrival that it's damaged or not the model specified(forget commercial entitities, specialty resellers know what you need it for, and their prices reflect that-- pretty close to the fees for professional data recovery). 3. I registered all of them electronically & snail mail to make the warranty official( though this doesn't help much for data recovery-- you get anotther one in return, that's it). 4. Several hard drives, each with multi-partitions--all data, program files & windows folders containing other crucial data & settings, as well as the swap file migrated elsewhere. Think about it: why keep one drive thrashing incessantly: between the OS, programs, temp folders & swap file, data files-- if all these simultaneous operations dont have to wait to be done on one / are each being done in separate ones, system performance has to be better-- and best: you're cutitng down the wear & tear by a multiple factor. Other advantages of this: say something in your OS got corrupted-- instead of spending anxious days troubleshooting, just format the os partition, reinstall, apply the autopatcher, and migrate back your folders with your desktop, settings, favorites, etc. Easy, peasy Japanesy... and, this allows turning off such system resource hoggers as windows Restore & other apps' real-time file protection/scanning. Peace.
  12. Office2k3 has in the root of the install cd, i believe setup.ini with a line like: min version check windows2k sp4 sic... But i don't think it's as simple as that--- also, as i've said before, standalone Publisher 2003 installed seamlessly for me.....
  13. Very interesting: I only have shdoc401.dll, and it obviously is not in use / or corrupted-- it has a folder icon... Maybe i should delete it?? I'm really tempted to try....wondering about this vis a vis the patched explorer.exe we now have....
  14. Salamo Alekko! I don't want to get in the way, nor state something too obvious or answer for Gape, but... 1. as the usb install was proceeding & stumbling over the location of various files-- were you doing a Find for each file & pointing the install procedure to the location? 2. but more critical: subsequent intel chipsets like 845/850(yours: 815) after they first shipped, required a patch in order to use stuff like USB, agp, pci, etc. : here's the file & description for it: http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/proc/T8C...infinst_enu.exe The Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility installs the Windows* INF files. The INF files inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality, such as AGP, USB, Core PCI, and ISAPNP services..... and here's the section where it's listed: http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_D...10&DwnldID=5411 I remember that for my mobos back in the days, then came the usb 1.1 update, then usb2-- and this patch was needed for it: USB QFE for USB 2.0 Support [uSBXPFIX.EXE] ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/5552/eng/usbxpfix.exe and usb2: ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/5540/eng/usb20.exe I don't see anymore any pre-usb2 downloads, like the usb 1.1 download, though it used to be there-- and/but i remember those were the ones used by several mobo makers... if you went to ECS, VIA sites to update drivers, they would point you to Intel site and/or host the downloads-- named Intel usb 1.1 & 2 updates. Here's the one at Via-- it still seems to have the 2001 date, though now it's called via usb 1.1 filter update and/or via host controller: http://www.viaarena.com/downloads/drivers/...rs/usbf_110.zip And as you know, here's everything Intel lists for your Intel® D815EEA2 Motherboard(btw the Intel App Accelerator makes a huge difference), of course nothing re usb: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...SE&submit=Go%21 So..... would that intel inf utility help, would it even install, would it be harmful? Good luck..... .
  15. You know, re office2k3: i keep hearing every once in a while that somebody else's done it-- maybe another Loch Ness?
  16. They were always on your computer-- OExpress could've read them. If it gives you peace of mind you can always export/back them up to another location...
  17. HI, i've only done one raid-- what's the mobo / raid firmware? In your bios, you enabled raid-- and had it try to detect the hard drives?...Device Manager lists your sata controller & w/ no problems...... btw, you wouldn't get one 400 listed, would you? in this discuss: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cf...hreadid=1494781 here are some pertintent questions: Did you load both drivers (Bootdrv menu option E) from floppy (F6 option)? [ie, must select from the floppy two times b4 Win XP starts to install] What are settings in BIOS? Hard drive Boot order and BIOS boot priority (2nd page), and SATA/RAID options (3rd page) R U using SATA 0 & SATA 1 connectors? Do you have any other HDD w/ an OS on them connected to mainboard? What HDDs in RAID 0? [WD36 or WD74DGD] On the 1st reboot did U see F10 option (RAID array) after POST, but b4 the OS should install/load? Where is DVD/CD drive IDE 0 or 1, Master or slave? Which Ver XP (H/P), SP (1/2) ? One guide: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=830&page=5 Dux guide: http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/mb/abit/kx7-333/raid1.htm In the first two pages of this 'advanced' unattended article they get into adjusting the raid drivers & xp install in detail.. http://www.beginnerspc.com/articles.cfm?ar...eid=1703&page=5 hth.....
  18. Did you go to/ look in that location i gave you i Documents & Settings? Were there any outlook files/folders there? Does a Find for .pst, turn up anything? Those may very well be OExpress messages you're looking at-- in any case, you should be able to find out right away, as you can read both formats in OExpress-- just fire it up, click File, Import, Messages, Outlook....
  19. Dos drivers for booting from the jumpdrive: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10215 more resources: http://newdos.yginfo.net/usbdos.htm oh, and run sfc after you're done: start/run/ type sfc & click enter or ok. So the next time you need to troubleshoot, you'll probably see the likely cause, such as a deleted/changed/corrupted system file. If you don't do it now, windows won't know all what's changed later on. good luck.
  20. and belarc advisor is good for that & other system info: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
  21. Good app-- it's actually contained in Jv16/ Registry Tool / Tools / Registry Cleaner. Here's last freeware version: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html#jv16 Crap Cleaner is good too, in conjunction-- & to quickly clean hard drive.
  22. Wait a second-- even if Outlook was uninstalled--per your quote: btw you deleted, not uninstalled it? And you actually took the extra step of going here and deleting?: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ etc...... as ripken204 suggested, you could just reinstall, or just copy / transfer those files & you can import / read them in another computer.... btw if you need to recover deletes, avoid using computer, turning on/off until you can use recovery tools-- did those two tools work? Also re your messages-- you likely hadn't been leaving copies on server(otherwise you wouldn't be here)?....
  23. azagahl: You may be right-- my setting's disappeared also-- either that or the SESP..... But..... if you have X-Setup, you can still adjust that from this location: System\File System\Windows 9x/ME Options\Misc\Low Disk Space Hhhmm......
