  1. Explorer/View/thumbnails: thumbnails get created too big & explorer crashes. Just re-open it & the folder will have more normal-sized thumbnails. As with any IE crash-- give it one second or two before re-clicking. During that time the icon does not respond to clicking-- clicking multiple times will result in several instances opening once it's recovered. I actually consider this an improvement over 98 in the way a crashed app is handled-- it seems that some sort of (successful) correction / memory recovery is attempted after a crash: there seems to more certainty that no matter what, there'll be enough resources left to continue running other apps. With 98 sometimes there wouldn't be enough resources left to save all work in progress; Task Manager(the Vulcan Salute) seems to be more stable/useful when low on resources. Also different/better with ME: when a browser(IE) page has an error that triggers closing it, only that one page closes, it doesn't take down all other pages open. BTW i'm talking about heavy simultanous use here: several programs & many browsing sessions ongoing... conclusion: Me handles memory / resources better, protects from total outage, recovers from crashes a bit better....... Explorer folder view settings don't seem to apply universally-- each new folder you open in explorer would require the settings adjustment........ Look in start/settings/taskbar & start menu/advanced for some extra stuffff... I had mentioned elsewhere that start/documents # of shortcuts could be increased to whatever one chose-- i made the reg change by creating maxrecentdocs-- this worked for one day, then the view returned back to 15(win98 default)... but the registry keys have not changed...the recent folder has over 50 shortcuts, 98 never kept so many. X-Setup's confused about which OS is installed for some tweaks.... .
  2. Cool... give us one for xp please! (no excuses, has to be possible) B)
  3. Sorry-- don't like hooking up keyboard & mouse to usb(in windows) so always use the usb to xx adapter... Have you tried these btw? http://www.stefan2000.com/darkehorse/PC/DOS/Drivers/USB/ and this bootdisk allows a usb2 mouse to be used in dos.... http://www.datoptic.com/Drivers/DAT.exe it uses duse4.4: http://www.pocketech.net/downloads/duse_4_4.zip this link also available at that stefan page. Note: duse 4.4 supports himem, 4.9-- if you get that somewhere, no.
  4. Let's not foget that once the 64-bit systems are out with subsequent pciexpress release & can address mucho, mucho ram.... they'll be in another dimension..
  5. Yeah, that happens quite a bit: keep trying the site, esp late night-- eventually you'll get in.
  6. Hi, -I-: I agree with you on NT re multitasking-- up to a point. I work with several database programs, live feeds, other browser sessions open: i've tried this on different computers & OS.... 2k/XP still complain. You like a tweaked 2k over XP, i totally agree with that. And you know, i'm not doing constant remote/collaborative projects using exotic databases over far-flung networks. I think one or two years from now we'll all be on the same page: with the next version of pci express, addressable memory in many gigabytes, subsequent upgrades of 64bit processor.....now you're talking--even if Longhorn were to still have significant issues, the performance difference would still be too great to avoid. All the best to you.
  7. edit: ..... the title of this thread should additionally contain: "And the ME Shell'", as per Tihiy--- separate and extra from 98SE2ME... Hi, thought i'd start this as a reference area. The point is not to document bugs, but rather to document changes-- good & bad: new features present, old ones gone. BTW To the powers that be: if this is out of line or in the wrong area, feel free to change as needed. We can note for everyone's benefit: pitfalls to avoid, ways to accomplish old tasks when settings have been altered or removed, and the converse-- new & improved methods we can accomplish with new/changed settings & features... all of which we may not be aware of. I'll start of w/ some: On bootup desk icons appear quickly but load their image very slowly. Sometimes the QuickLaunch Bar disappears(taking with it systray/taskbar & start button)-- if you click open any desktop icon, it re-appears. btw i've dragged mycomputer icon to the top, creating a thin, vertical bar(width adjustable by you) on top: gives immediate access separately to any drive, disk, & some system folders-- less clicks than using explorer/mycomputer/start buttons. My Briefcase not listed separately outside C drive in Save to/Browse to Dialog Boxes. If you have MyBriefcase open and simultaneously start a download AND your downlad settings are either to use it as default OR to the last saved location(which was coincidentally MyBriefcase): you will get a message that it's being used by another computer & get prompted to use a different download location. (BTW i use it as default download location-- with several computers & its sync feature, i can think of no better location: of course, i've migrated it<actually the whole Desktop Folder, where it resides> out of Windows folder-- in case of future problems with OS<where a format of the OS partition & reinstall is called for>) Web Folders icon not in My Computer anymore, this not changed by applied MS WBFLDRS update listed on MDGx site. Disk Cleanup detailed settings(scheduled cleaning & related details, recycle bin size, etc.) gone from Properties. MSConfig has many added features-- take a look... you can use it in addition to SFC to extract an install file. CD drive is listed as compact disc in explorer/mycomputer. Speaking of these: in View/Choose columns/ extra features you can choose. No way to get around though, after having booted out of safe mode, these & other folder settings have to be re-enabled. Also can't seem to get around some of the icons in both quicklaunch bar & favorites don't stay where one wants them: mini-groups of these get alpha sorted, others stay random....... Start/Documents: that recent shortcut view, default & max 15 in w98, can be 0-to whatever now-- X-Setup has a setting tweak for this, & i posted reg change earlier somewhere. MaxRecentDocs is the Dword value. Search is so improved-- & it seems to auto/default also do a text search inside windows cabs/inf files w/o needing to use the text search line directly beneath. ok, enough rambling for now......
  8. Wa Alykum salam: OK-- the Rambo part helped: the model is named Ram Bo, manufactured by this Chinese company: http://www.aforce.com/index.html# which sells retail products under the Muse brand: http://www.muse.com.hk/support/howtoinstal...sp?lang=en&tid= Here are the drivers, choose the picture that resembles your model: http://www.muse.com.hk/support/driver/index.jsp?lang=en&tid= one on the right is usb1.1: : http://www.muse.com.hk/support/driver/Crys...river%201.1.zip usb2 in the middle column bottom: http://www.muse.com.hk/support/driver/Ramb....0%20Driver.zip They both come with a nice setup program, making the install process a bit easier: they include the necessary drivers & extra system files/utilities that might be missing from your system/you might need, pdf manuals-- the second one comes with what looks like a software program. BTW it will not hurt to install both-- your system will recognize only the correct one, and you never know when you might find a different used one somewhere w/ a missing or damaged cd... some of their listed Precautions: a.) Deactivate the M-Disk before removing it from the USB port b.) Keep your M-Disk away from water, extreme moisture or heat c.) Keep your M-Disk away from electrostatic sources and magnetic fields d.) Store your M-Disk with its cap in place e.) Do not force the M-Disk into the USB port. If the port resists smooth insertion of the M-Disk, check that the device is positioned with the USB icon on top and that the port is free of obstructions You do have more than one system, so if there are any other issues, feel free to let us know.
  9. Hi, welcome, have you by chance installed the WinME replacements, or only the sesp? You may have a mishmosh of files if you subsequently installed sesp.........
  10. Okie, dokie: Do a Find in your system exactly like this(you can copy & paste): UFD*.* Right-click UFD.INF and select install, then re-click that search button again. Try to re-install your peripheral, and if the install routine can't find ufd.sys, point it to where it is according to your search. If it didn't turn up, that's ok-- point it to windows\system\precopy\ufd.cab-- it should see it and continue w/ install. Let us know if this worked-- if not, pls give us your peripheral brand name, model, FCC ID#, serial #.... anything you can tell us....
  11. Don't know that this applies totally to you, but Vilma auto-tracks any changes you make w/o any intervention on your part-- they're visible in its history pane, which has undo function....
  12. no bar excuse my eecumings style-- Ana Barbara is one of the top 5 female singers in Mexico... she's getting the plastic surgery mania, though-- she also wants to be twice as big in certain areas..... All the best to you-- I have learned plenty from your insightful posts.
  13. That's very true-- i looked at it from one oint of view only-- not distribution.
  14. OH, gosh darn!! Thank you for that valiant effort--
  15. no sata-- not trying to flame, btw. They've done wonderful work-- they've even worked up usb2 Dos drivers, etc.
  16. I can see giving up our present systems-- because they just won't cope, in about 2-3 years-- by then the next upgrade of initial Pci Express is in use along with addressable memory in beaucoup gigabytes(say in the teens as a median to high amount in use), next generations of 64bit chips, broadband as high as 25-50mb w/ under 10 considered subpar....
  17. Excellent!!! I'm attaching all 3 of them if anyone needs right away. I liked the added functionalities of it-- it's just that it hiccups when regeven's not present... MECfgHlp.zip
  18. Sorry, we can't we delete our own posts? I had thought the shell change had deleted a couple of other files, but was mistaken. The change has worked grreat!
  19. You're awesome-- MDGx did not include it, btw-- just that msconfig...
  20. erpdude8: winme's msconfig that we now use in 98setome... : http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/win9x/...me_msconfig.zip interacts with regenv32.exe, both files included in above download. Here's an MS paste-- Command Line Options for REGENV32.EXE in Windows Millennium Edition Article ID : 265835 Last Review : September 28, 2004 Revision : 1.0 This article was previously published under Q265835 On this page SUMMARY MORE INFORMATION SUMMARY When you move environment variables into and out of the registry, you must use the Windows Millennium Edition (Me) application, Regenv32.exe. You can also use the application for troubleshooting environment variable problems. MORE INFORMATION Assuming Windows Me is installed on the C: partition, regenv32.exe -c4 runs every time that Msconfig.exe runs or when Windows is shut down. The following are definitions of the environment variables discussed in the "Summary" portion of this article: • IMPORT: Discards environment settings currently in the registry and imports the environment settings specified in the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files. • EXPORT: Discards environment settings currently specified in the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and replaces them with the environment settings in the registry. • SYNC: To perform an IMPORT operation followed by an EXPORT operation. • RECONCILE: Reads the environment settings in the registry and the autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files. It compares the two and imports any differences discovered into the registry. • DELETE: Deletes all environment settings in the registry. The Syntax for Regenv32.exe is REGENV32 -dn where -d is the drive letter containing the registry, Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and -n is a number between 1 and 5 representing the action Regenv32.exe performs. The actions are as follows: 1. IMPORT Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files' environment settings into the registry. 2. EXPORT the registry's environment settings to the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. 3. SYNCHRONIZE the registry environment with the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. 4. RECONCILE the registry environment with the environment variables set in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. 5. DELETE registry environment settings. This should be used with extreme care and only in a test environment. It shouldn't be too difficult, esp for non-dolts, like me....
  21. you're totally right-- Reminds me of that cockamamie conspirational theory floating around the web(i may have a detail or two wrong, but it basically went like): because there's a extra space that makes up for when bad sectors are found-- that all hard drives had way larger capacity than labelel, or all had the same capacity--- and that companies just labeled them as different-sized for profit reasons(cheaper to manufacture just one size/kind, yaddah, yadah). The proof given was that they would partition a drive to show a total size double-triple what it originally was labeled as... the plans for this were all over the web, some actually for sale... Caveat Emptor. ¡go san luis potosí! ¡go ana bárbara!
  22. Since we now use it in 98, we need to nix that mising env screen & the deleting of config.sys....
