  1. no new stuff-- & it was kinda old...... my memory's hazy but there is one file, maybe license.xxx? that precludes the complete install of the whole thing as a suite? though all the individual components do get installed...
  2. not when the sucky ms site can't be accessed.....
  3. Do you mean you want an alternative to GoBack? I haven't used it, but-- whether Norton or Roxio release, it supposedly allows individual selected folders to be restored... both have a tuturial.exe file-- is it any good? For selective jobs I use the following freeware: Karen Replicator and/or XXCopy32 with /clone switch CAVEAT: I have found that unless if i disconnect from the web / disable from task manager all but critical processes OR boot to native dos(& use the xxcopy16 dos app)-- not every single file is able to get backed up / cloned!!! THOUGH, usually the failed-copied files is not an issue(4/5 files in use) IF the folder being restored with a command line command that copies all files over into each folder, rather than just a typical windows command with one folder replacing another one. You will then still have those few missed files-- hopefully of course, there won't be the unlikely coincidence that one of those handful were damaged or corrupted-- as in the case of recovering from a major problem: though in such a case it's probably best/quickest to just format the os partition & reinstall(multiple partitions, with all document, mail, data folders migrated out of OS partition is very recommended). Hope this has helped & not been too meandering-- and if what you wanted was specific GoBack directions, maybe someone else will pipe in. Good Luck.
  4. I like it very much also, BUT, i prefer to install office97 very early, some of those files are low versions-- then i run a registry repairer or spybot/tools/sysiternals-- the install is very sloppy(all versions, including 23k are): some files are left behind in temp folder, there're both erroneous & misspelled reg shortcuts / paths, a few missing files(some discontinued, some still at windows update) that didn't make it on the install cd)... i choose to manually repair & find fixes, rather than allow autofix, which's usually delete reg entry. Then i apply @ 3 dozen subsequent upgrades & optional components(can't get the most recent Excel updates to install for some reason). I fully agree that a completely patched OFFICE 97, with all optional components installed, is very, very good and can suffice-- significant updates were added to it right up until 2000. I've been replacing a bunch of the updated dlls from 97 & 2k with their counterparts from XP & 23K(nothing too thorough, just whatever i notice)-- have only found a couple that didn't take... btw, the following site: http://www.freebizmag.com/emailessentials03welcome.htm will give you a free copy of OfficeReady Essentials Home Page-- Pro & Regular Retail versions that installs into Office(didn't try to add it to 97, just using it in 2k), as well as totally-free yearly magazine subscriptions, in exchange for registering-- no cc, nor any financial info/process takes place. What's good about the site is that if you have patience, almost all major periodicals are offered free at one time or another-- offers come & go quickly though. (btw no spam risk here)
  5. Why, that sounds eerily like initial Win95, 98, & XP.......
  6. Yokoso !! at this page: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/DrIntl/faqs/muifaq.mspx please scroll down to these questions: Installation and Administration Questions How do I install Windows MUI? Is it possible to install Windows MUI in unattended mode? What upgrade paths to Windows MUI are supported? How do I add or remove user interface languages? How do I select, or change, a user interface language? How do I restrict users to one particular user interface language if more than one language is installed on the machine? Can I use Group Policy to control the user interface language of network users? Oya Subinasai.
  7. Not unless you want to hex it-- talk to Gape: I wouldn't worry though-- whatever it installed that overwrote something, you can return the favor w/ your new-dated stuff. You could run SFC or peruse its log(hopefully you have it set to append, not overwrite) in Helpdesk to sleuth the likely culprit.... (In windows\system\precopy\sp1.cab is all the SESP stuff, and windows uses it in lieu of its install cd.) Or you can just remove all USB stuff & reinstall it: do a usb Find & migrate any files/folders with usb in the name in Windows & its subfolders-- there's about 30 total scattered in Windows & in its following subfolders: INF, NEW, System32\Drivers, System, System\Catroot\(xxxxxx)\ BUT the SESP would have to be uninstalled, or at the vey least all usb stuff removed from that SP1.Cab...
  8. good luck... one hint: it opens to last key worked on-- keep double-clicking the topmost line/ folder with the backslash to go up the levels back to main(same way as navigating the folders in Dos Editor ......
  9. edit: BTW in spite of below fix, the settings won't really matter anyhow... read this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q131572/ though one extra keypress aín't so bad actually....... I did just install the 98ME replacements-- & yes, properties box looks different, but i don't think that's the answer. Do you now / have you had any utiilities re: undelete, protected recycle bin(Norton Utilities have such a function, as well Fix-it, Nuts N Bolts Macaffee, etc..... even if you uninstall them, not all such settings get rolled back. You can try deleting it, then windows will re-build it-- hopefully thus it will then be back to a normal state & you'll be able to do with it whatever you wish. Boot into dos and delete your Recycled folder-- two steps / if you have more than one partition, repeat process in each one. Type: attrib -r -s -h c:\recycled (click enter) type: deltree c:\recycled (click enter) boot into windows. viel Glueck
  10. Maybe... did you click subscribe button & select winxp, fixlet central & bigfix tech suport modules? btw it'll also get your office updates......
  11. regexplore is nice--i used for a long time until i ran into: Vilma-- it doesn't have an address bar, but what i like is that when you wade through it, your previously-navigated folders are at the top of each level: cuts down on a lot of scrolling through hundreds of entries....And, has a history pane of all previous changes, each of which can be undone with a click-- this is all default-done transparently, without any user input or settings adjustments needed. It also has bookmark / favorite functions. Delete, edit, replace all you want w/o having to manually export/backup anything-- and just undo with one click. I just realized i should change it to default instead of regedit in spybot, etc.
  12. Let's see if i get this: I can check in mine's properties: do not move files to recycle bin, remove immediately when deleted. Then,,,,, I can open X-Setup and go here: Appearance\Desktop\Icons\Visible Icons\Generic Windows Icons\uncheck recycle bin..... OR-- I can hit the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E)\select & delete Recycle Bin\log off or reboot....... is that what you meant, or am i still not getting it? btw i can check/uncheck either delete confirmation and/or do not move files........ and neither gets grayed out......
  13. yes, bfc-- i put it up in the link above-- BigFix.... check it out.
  14. edit: looks like Smokey the Bear saved the day!!! Awesome! How 'bout a similar for the Resource Kit? Not that i know-- & i've looked high & low. Why do you think MS wouldn't help you in this case? Have you tried isobuster? It could save the day: http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/
  15. Help does not run-- described here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=37302&st=80&
  16. Update on # Recent Docs in Start Menu: reg key is set to 30, actual number visible climbed to 32-- by coincidence decided to change the icon size in start menu from large to small, and this triggered the # recent docs shortcuts to reverse to 15.... this did not change by reversing icon size setting-- nor by opening more documents. Suspect that as last time, on rext reboot the number will climb above 15. Will experiment by totally emptying recent menu. Of note, before starting all these upgrades: shortcuts there for ms word documents would return 'sometimes' a not found error-- but this was likely Office's issue re when one makes changes to a document and saves it under a different name.
  17. You should be able to: if you right-click recycle bin / properties/....... If for some reason its properties have been de-activated, run X-Setup & run its search for recycle bin-- you should be able to then re-enable them...... registry solution: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/943/
  18. I also keep spyware out fanatically, and i've disabled a ton of services. I've heard of folks even having problems with the Autopatcher version that includes SP2-- for me it's the other way around: I've had one problem that i solved by just re-running the autopatcher-- choosing to over-install everything, replace identical files when prompted...
  19. Tried couple more times, still no go--- I can believe i actually spent hours tweaking my settings & programs, trying to get into the site.
  20. Oh, it's been at 8192 It loads instantly now, btw.
  21. Very true for some..... get ready for the expected howls from those it hasn't affected.
  22. What rules? Get your facts straight before your a-cup & panties get in a tizzy! Practically anyone can beta-test Longhorn.
  23. Good job-- outfrigginstanding...candidate for inclusion in the 98SEMP10! BTW those who've done the WMP10toW98 bit should have that codec already...
  24. fine for me-- loads a bit slowly-- but ok otherwise.
