  1. anyone bought one of these cards yet?! curious to know how it performs other than the benchmark reviews... noticed the x2600xt is only £80 in the uk, that has impressed me so far!
  2. for temp measures until its sorted i've just set msconfig to use only 2048mb of ram, not the best fix but dual booting and at least i can check for updates and things now!
  3. Well, I know there has been a free ramdisk which was limted to 32mb and worked in xp64... ...however as i was curious about this myelf i've discovered (for a price) you can get a full feature 64bit ramdrive for all versions of windows since 2000, x86 and x64...with support for $24 USD, or $12 if you don't want the updates and support it has its limitations, it can only handle 64gig ramdrive however, I mean i'm not sure how thats a limitation yet, but i'm sure someone would complain about it http://www.ramdisk.tk/ hope its of use! theres a free trial but it only supports basic ramdisk, doesn't save or load images and has a limit to the size
  4. doesn't the wii use some insanely low number of watts, including, gpu cpu and the spinning dvd! don't see why its not possible! the x1250 isn't exactly a performance card.. ... personally i'm hoping the x2600xt is a good card! never like buying highend stuff no more, and I have a x1600xt now and feel it only appropriate to have the newer model if its any good! (and cheap!)
  5. so, vista x86 has no issues with the extra memory but 64 does? I have used 2 machines now with more than 2 gig of ram and both have a problem with an asus 138g wireless network card, take out the extra memory and can get it to work, xp64 handles the memory fine tho. Having to use usb wireless to get connected on the one machine, ordered another card for mine to get around it for now! I have to say having the extra memory seems to speed things up on mine in vista, but then the network connection doesn't work so maybe thats why...in xp64 I find i can turn off the paging file which is nice even when running lots of vm's
  6. Just re-writing this thread so its a bit smaller (was way to big last time) basically i Have a problem in 64 vista that my wireless card no longer works after upgrading to 3 gig of ram, I thought before it was due to an update on windows, but after a lot of testing i've realised I have trouble with having more than 2 gig of ram, same problems on two different machines, one with a intel 945p and another with an intel 975 chipset, both computers fine with xp64 but both havethe same issues with the same wireless card having a code 10 error after installing more than 2 gig of memory. Does anyone know of any updates that would fix this? i've tried looking around and can't find anything, its just really annoying as xp64 seems to work perfect, vista has lots of conflicting devices in device manager (even with just the 2 gig in) .. also I'd forgotten how fast xp64 is compared to vista, apart from the interface everything seems faster, I seem to of gotten addicted to the aero + glass affects tho and feel xp is ugly in comparasion now!
  7. out of interest, do you have any PCI cards installed? and have you had any trouble since installing the extra ram? I have the same motherboard, using vista 64, have trouble, xp64 everything works fine...
  8. I find putting the battery on a full charge then (if the bios supports it) calibrate the battery which just runs down the battery fromwhat i can tell, but before hand uninstall the battery from windows so windows shows the correct % when it gets back, my ex's laptop would run for about 2 hours with less than 1 minute remaining!
  9. ?????????????????????? a system can crash because it has more than one stick of ram in it!??!?!

    DVD Playback

Just curious, i've always removed media centre using vlite, although with the latest vlite I kept it as I've never been able to play dvd's using wmp since using vlite, I'm not sure if its media centre that needs to be there, all I know is that now i've kept media centre DVD's play file in vista I can't remmeber the problem, I assumed it was to do with the video drivers as an error popped up saying that something to do with my video card will not let me play back the dvd I'll have a lot of free time this week although not at the moment so I can mess around in the week to see if it was just removing media centre, I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this? and I know there are better DVD players but to be honest i like the convience of having wmp just work!
  11. does cnc not work on the 9600xt? I would of thought it should be able to run it easily just not on full settings!, my poorly x1600xt runs cnc 3 fine on full settings and AA in 1280x1024, er without shadows on full tho, have to turn then down one notch, or turn off AA...so almost full settings! (i just put in the x1600xt handles it easily as both those cards have an huge performance benifit over mine) incidently i've seen the x1800gto very cheap!

    vLite 1.0 beta - OMG

Personally I think you should just program a crystal ball to tell you the future what the size will be... ...Why do you need to know the size anyways, I mean you must have a dvd drive in order to read the dvd....and vista costs a hell of a lot more than a dvd writer u can get them incredibly cheap! I'm very happy with vlite! I felt cheeky saying theres no progress with the refresh my score thing! ...If the people wanted the featre of knowing the size of each component individually they could always do it themselves and give nuhi a big list of sizes/components!

    vLite 1.0 beta - OMG

I always find the x64 version rates my computer higher... first off, isntalled lots of things and memory usage only 600mb (with superfetch enabled) quite impressed with this! usually it was 0.99gig after starting windows (and this its with a couple of programs open on screen n everything!) secondly, one thing that does annoy me about using vlite, is that on a vlited install, the 'refresh my score' thing to get the computers performance shows no progress when using vlite, without you get a nice progress box saying what its doing, however vlite you just click, its doing it but theres no indication its doing it unless you look at the cpu usage! its not a big thing, but still its somethingi've noticed!
  14. Great u've noticed, but we are not disconnected from the world. After I have decided which parts to buy, I'll find a store who sells them... lol, I always find it funny when people from certain large nations assume the rest of the world is behind the times..(of course jokes on me being in the uk and generally being the last place to get anything...) was it not a joke?
  15. lol, loved the iHouse!
  16. Just wondering if anyone has heard of a company called Addon? I bought a router recently on ebay (first mistake) was very cheap, and i thought it would be a good test to see if its my router or the network card as for some reason the range of the router doesn't seem to reach my comptuer anymore, even tho it has done fine for years... I have to admit the range on this router is amazing (considering how cheap it was anyway), vista is currently showing 'Very good' 4 out of 5 bars, the netgear one I could only ever get one bar (router is in the same place) sometimes i've had 2 bars, but usually the connection quality was poor or very poor, it never had more than 2 bars siginal strength. The router has many more options than the netgear, seems like it could be quite good, so far issues i've had DHCP server doesn't seem to work with vista. (works fine on an old PII with 2000 installed) Wired networking seems impossible to configure (only tried with vista, network card is built in so don't have another to try, although the card works fine with the netgear router) Wireless won't connect after several hours (not sure about wired as it won't connect at all) I have a Wii console which won't connect when the router is set to b & g modes, when i change it only vista will connect at will only connect at 1mb, change the setting back, have just emailed techinical support, but since i've never heard of the company before just thought i'd see if anyone else has heard of one, i've found another forum which someone posted simular problems to me, overall the poster seemed impressed with the router, apart from the connectivity issues (took 4 hours to get it working) i'm just annoyed at how good the siginal is! if that was bad I would simply get another router, but i've tried other routers which brag about superiour range and nothing has come close to the siginal strength of this one.
  17. ^^ I like that explanation! Nice n simple! but straight to the point
  18. hrmm, demo run great for me, but the full game didn't, .... just won't run the file, comes up with an error, even with the patches (I mean the error appears when trying to run the patches), .... running vista x64, ironically, the demo exe when placed in the full game's folder just runs the game, I have heavily vlited my vista perhaps thats got something to do with it, but can't be bothered to reinstall just for the sake of one game (not yet anyways!) p.s. theres a patch to get it working on windows 2000, dunno if it will work with anything below that tho
  19. holy crap, I feel like i'm in the 3'rd grade but with super geeks from hell... ...my take on all this for the average user, there is no difference, except that sata is much easier to install as the plugs are nicer if you are some power user who's with raid what not and all that, then sata gives greater bandwidth overall...however the sata drives and ide drives mechnically are very simular and I highly doubt someone using a computer could tell the difference between the too without running benchmarks proving one is better than the other... In short, in my opinion the answer the original posters question could be something like Well, in reality there isn't much of a difference, however, most things are sata nowadays, sata products (well harddrives) are generally cheaper, cd/dvd drives are avaliable, overall my self i'd always go for sata unless you specifically need ide, for example some motherboards have onboard raid but only for IDE in that case if you wanted raid get IDE drives, but since that doesn't apply here thats meaningless P.s. i have not installed 100's of harddrives of any sort, however I have researched these things before when I was decideding weather or not to get sata in the past, but i'm capable of being able to suggest things for someone who wants to build a computer, not google's next data centre...
  20. Hrmm, About the slowness at startup I find for about 3-4 weeks vista is very fast at startup (well under a minute), but then I get the same thing, it seems to be doing something, I noticed it in the beta quicker and thought it was fixed in the retail, I find it annoying as my wireless connection connects immediatly but it doesn't show connected up to the net until its finished doing whatever its doing... also i tried removing superfetch with vlite, and I much prefer having everything launch instantly, anyone who says it reduces peformance I don't belive has tried it. one thing i noticed, hibernation seems to take forever to restore on my computer, its much quicker to boot up (less than 3 minutes to be ready) but if i hibernate it takes about 10-12 minutes before everything is smooth again,
  21. well, this is a pointless thread really, I just wanted to say, last week I upgraded my motherboard, thought id' have to reinstall windows, so made a new vlite cd, ready to go as it started up but for curiousities sake i just let windows boot, ... and it did! it took about 5 minutes installing all the new devices and there was a huge list of things it had installed, rebooted worked fine! All in all, i was quite shocked at the fact it worked, and secondly i've been using my computer for over a week and changing the motherboad seems to of affected nothing, I know i've done it in xp before, but I used to have to go into safe mode and uninstall all the drivers and the time you done that it would be quicker to reinstall..maybe...and then usually it wouldn't seem to work as well i found.

    tweak to add to vlite

Personally I dislike windows vista without superfetch, it makes it feel like xp, one of the things i love about vista is how snappy it is, i thought ah, use vlite to remove superfetch, sounds like a pointless idea, but it feels so much slower, reinstalled vista a day later as i found it to slow. Not sure why everyone seems to hate it, sure it uses memory, but why have memory unused when it can be used?
  23. I too like the snipping tool! however i felt cheeky asking But i hope it can be done!
  24. Hi, i'm still using my vista rc2 beta, hoping vista becomes very cheap by the time it runs out...doubtful i know... Anyways, has anyone used this vista upgrade express thing? my ex bought a laptop yesterday that is eligable for a vista home premium upgrade..on the site to register it asks how many copies of vista do you want, with the abliity to select upto 5.. now I thought, hrmm, i could live with a 32bit genunie copy for insanly cheap, i'd prefer the x64 version, but really, for under £15.. Does anyone know if vista will install if its not the laptop it was intended to be with? I can't think of any reason why they will allow 5 copies unless ms are thinking they will let all the comptuers be upgraded, makes sence if someone buys a new one they will have an older one in the house... if anyone knows anything about this program i'd be happy to know!
