  1. i'd guess its more of an issue with the save file, what if u start a new game does it still do it?
  2. thats odd, the sims 2 used to run perfect on my 'old' radeon 9800 pro!. come to think of it, it run fine on a radeon 9600 as welll.... i think your just finding excuse to upgrade.. we all do it!
  3. hi, i just wanted to add my little bit! i'm a young know it all, (if that means i'm a young know it all just because i'm under 25) and I personally feel that this forum isn't that bad, I mean theres some peoples posts i tend to discard as useful sometimes as they seem to go on about how they are so right type of thing, but generally i find its not to bad, i do agree with the search problem, but thats not this forum, thats everyforum, its a problem of a forum being succesful, (in my opinion) I like to agree with DL's rules, although i've many times gone to almost post something because i was annoyed with something someone else posted, but I feel its just easier not to argue! I'm not sure about anyone else but i've atualy posted huge responses then realised it would be childish and silly and clicked cancel Regarding the comment about the moderators, i've noticed many forums will defend popular members, even if they do disobey the rules, but as soon as a new person does the same thing they get punished, its just another unfair fact of life i think,I feel it happens with everything. off topic...i just noticed a button taht says 'Toggle Side Panel' never noticed it before, .... actually the whole posting thing looks abit different..hrmmm
  4. cool! thanks for the newsflash!
  5. I've been wondering about this, i've noticed for some reason vista seems to think the majority of my folders are for music, which i find highly annoying!
  6. Yes, I realised its all junctions, I am confused to why they did it tho, is it just to show off the fact windows can do it and that no one really used it before? personally i've used the junctions, when dual booting i used them to point both users to the same favorites and my documents so i could reach files on both easily! it is just cosmetic, but it irrates me
  7. wow! i remember using that terragen program years ago, thinking it was neat, but at the time i was in college and didn't havethe money for a half decent comptuer let a lone a decent one, and i like this thread! thanks!
  8. gigabyte's i-ram drive? seems like the best place for me! before i started using vista... in xp i would disable the paging file and just let it use the ram, if windows runs out of physical memory it will just pop up saying 'windows needs to expand the paging file, this may take a few minutes' using 1 gig of ram, the only times that ever popped up was when I plain just tried opening lots of things to see what happens, or if i accidently scanned in a photo at the highest resolution... ..however using vista with 1.5gig of ram, that message just pops up to often.. and in answer to your question, personally, myself, if that 200 gig hd is only used for backing up and storage as yo usay, i'm guessing its not used often, I would put the page file on that drive but as others have said, you won't really get the 'correct' answer, justa bunch of opinions of people who know they are right!
  9. I am the only one having a problem with people complaining about vista's requirements? from what i've learned, any machine that can run xp smoothly will run vista smoothly...and xp requires a lot considering what it is, i've run windows 2000 on a P75 and 96mb (no nlite or anything!) and once it loaded it felt fine, ok programs were a little bit slower loaading up, but it was very smooth, now i find xp sluggish or an old P3 866 with 256mb of ram, why is that? recently that machine broke put 2000 on a PII266 with 256mb, that machine is much much smoother than the p3 with xp on ever was... anyways my point is, why say vista is rubbish compared to xp, when reality, if your main point is system requirements, why the hell are you people using xp? if your that concerned rollback to 2000, and if you really are that fussy go back to dos, very low requirements, strangly no one uses it anymore... ...those people who complain about using windows, last time i was experimenting linux has a program called wine, .... last time i checked, that sorts out a lot of those oh but it only runs on windows programs... and if you really hate windows and you feel linux is rubbish, you should go out and learn c and help the reactos project! personally i love vista! I don't think i'll be installing xp on this machine again, unless there is some reason that i really really *need* it for something!
  10. Hrm, just noticed something about the x64 edition of vista, running rc2...I've noticed that both 32bit and 64bit versions of the program files programs exist...i mean, take for example the windows sidebar, vista x64 uses the 64bit sidebar app, however, the files are also there for the 32bit version... Could the 32 bit varients be removed using vlite? or would it be possible for each option that has both versions to remove either the 32bit or the 64 bit? or is that going a bit crazy?! I'm also curious, if you remove the sidebar in x64 using vlite, does it also remove the 32bit version? At a quick look things i've noticed have 32bit and 64bit versions are Windows Sidebar Windows Photo Gallery Windows Media Player Windows Mail Windows Calendar ok, its only around an additional 22mb of space for the 32 bit versions, but still Things of interest i noticed, windows only installs the x64 games, no 32bit ones, there appear to be 3 32bit speech engines and only one for x64, the x64 is a x64 version of one of the 32bit ones. I've only had a quick look at the folders to see what files are there, i've noticed some folders are in both folders, and noticed that some of the 32bit ones only have some files, i'm assuming for compatablity, but regarding the sidebar, I can't think of a reason why you would need both? just taking up extra space! The reason i was wondering, was because at first i was curious to if you could merge the 2 program files foldger together, as i'm not a big fan of having extra folders for everything! I know its not essential, but i liked it with xp, there was just, documents and settings, program files, windows and recyled, everything else would be organised into one of those folders well and system volume information, I suppose i may be a bit of a fussy but for some reason i like the root folder to look neat! ... i think i need to get out more!
  11. Personally I'd love it to just use documents and settings and do away with the users folder! although I have afeeling that won't be easy to do...
  12. What do you want to do? clone the display? or have seperate displays? if you want to clone the display i'm pretty sure you'd need a card that supported dual head If you like matrox the old g400's are quite cheap now! used to have one, pretty good card! although only the g450 seem to be avaliable Personally i think it would be easier just to buy a cheap radeon or nvidia card which has dual vga, can get cards very cheap now, you can get a radeon 7000 card with dual vga for under £20! actualy I don't think they make cards with only one vga port anymore?
  13. i agree with the folders, whats wrong with the documents and settings? why change it, theres no need! unless of course you need to access the initial folder using a dos program and its annoying to type docume~! and typing users is much easier, but it does seem silly overall i much prefer vista, but i really hate the way the folders are organised, has anyone unchecked the hide system files and folders ? you can't even click on the picture folder from your documents folder, it comes up saying you don't have access you have to click on the correct folder as the other was just a junction to it, at least from what i can tell hrmm, if i click on my documents folder in explorer, expand it, clicking on My Music, My Pictures, My Videos causes this error 'Acces is Denied' same when i click on the documents and settings folder Honestly, I can see no reason for this at all whatsoever with vista, unless they want to confuse us sorry for my rant! but the folder thing really bugs me, overall i find vista is much faster and much smoother, but really, whats with the folders?
  14. i'm not sure if you could cut corners with the memory requirement for vista, from what i've been able to read up about vista's setup uses some kind of filesystem driver for the cd that allows writing to the cd volume possible in ram, so a certain amount of ram has to be present to run the program, then more for the settngs as it installs, so for once less memory may actually prevent the installer from working!
  15. as far as i'm aware the geode processor is stictly amd, nothing to do with via, just old athlon's that have been reworked for low power? I've built a system with the geode nx chip in before, socket a, i've noticed they've moved on to the newer socket, I personally was very impressed, board and chip £46 at the time, came with onboard video and sound, never tried running it without the fan,but replaced it with another and it has more than enough power to handle anything i tried on it, pitty I can't find another one the turion 64 chips seem very good, and unlike the intel equivilant i notice they not only 64bit but feature SSE3 and 3Dnow, still I will hold off getting one of them as the price compared to the VIA chips is qutie a big difference, can't get over the fact on american sites i've found a c7 cpu plus motherboard for $60 with an agp slot, with an ATX board! (thats some £160 cheaper than ones i can find in this country that don't even have agp!) It'll be till after christmas anyway, but thanks, I never knew about the turion64 chips, and it seems lots of motherboards will work with them! if anyone is interested the ATI express board seems to be the best board for running these chips from what i can gather, and they support cool n quiet, seems to be the only chipset that works with it properly? at least from what i can find out! if i get more free cash i thin i'l invest in the turion, unless people start selling the c7's at reasonable prices in this country, and with a normal sized atx board! I will at some point get a turion64 chip to experiment with, unless something better comes along
  16. out of interest, doesn't the sony laptop have a function key for adjusting the lcd brightness? i've never used a sony laptop myself, but i've used a few from other brands and everyone of them has a lcd brightness button? i've found that usually the function key and the up and down arrows adjust the brightness
  17. I may of just found the solution, and sorry if this has already been mentioned, well, it worked for me anyway, some of the files that get exracted from the iso are read only, unchecking the readonly box for the entire folder for the extracted files seems to fix this problem, can't belive thats all it was all this time!
  18. have no idea...but i remember seeing my gf has a logitech quickcam5000 and it says ready for vista on the box...would the 5000 drivers work with the 4000?
  19. to be honest, i'm more annoyed that they have these huge icons that no one will ever use, just taking up considerbly more space! no one vista is so huge with HD 1080i icons for everyprogram (alright, slight exageration, maybe) but prsonally i haven't noticed any wierd icons even when they are super enlarged, could be your video drivers? also, i have to say, the amount of icons in windows, i'm surprised more havent' been left out! and lastly, did you really register to this forum just to complain about vista's icons when enlarged?!
  20. I hate to ask a stupid question, and, well, Does this too lwork in vista? i'm running x64 rc2, and i always get the filter driver error, I realise it doesn't work x64 edition just yet, and i don't actually have the x86 rc2, However, i was jsut wondering if it does work, as i just tried for kicks and fun on the x64 one and it brings up that filter manager error, I notied after reading through here that if you've used nlite to remove things from xp/2003 you need to install the filter manager? (i'm sure thats the right thing) again, i just wanted to see if i could get it to show me what you can remove already! didn't expect it to work So basically, in short, does vlite run under vista? or do you need to have an installed xp for it to run?
  21. I've found places that sell pc chips motherboards, but haven't found any that sell the VIA bundle thanks anyways, i'll keep looking out for them tho!
  22. the reason i was interested in the Via c7 cpu was due to the power usage, I wanted to build a low power pc, I've also been lookingat the amd Geode NX cpu, howevet the price of the c7 i find appealing, at least, the low cost ones, that board you mentioned seems to retail for $70 new in america, however I can't find a single C7 board in the uk with those features, and the ones i can find only have one pci slot and cost in between £140-200. another reason for wanting to try via, is that i'm curious to how it performs, and the security engine in the via chip seems appealing, wanted to see if i could find anysoftware that actually makes use of it! Out of interested, are there any other processors that are x86 and low power, which could handle a demanding (ie windows) os?
  23. personally i'd recommened either hte newest ATI onboard or Nvida on board, i find with ati you can get a pretty resonable price motherboard (also having used ati chipsets in the past, i've found them to be very stable, and considering the price very appealing
