hrmm, as much as i love the performance of my computer so i can be geeky and play games, I'd love to have a low power low noise computer for the living room, not for tv, or anything, just normal use, even to play a game on now and then what i ahve now, worked, until 2 days ago, seems to of died completly, as its an old PIII slot 1 chip i feel it will have to be replaced mobo n everything anyway memory, video card, so i've been trying to find a c7 chip, now i can buy a mobo and chip for £200 odd, but i do'nt want that, i want a normal motherboad, with pci express or agp something more than pci. Has anyone seen a 'normal' ie, micro atx, or full size, not a mini or nano board, or has anyone seen the cpu on its own? I was convinced for along time this cpu is what i want to try, however I feel like i am unable to, i've spent most of my free time in the last week trying to find one! I was also excited when i read it will work with intel chipsets, however, no cpu anyware! I really can't justify spending £200 on the bundled chip n board, especially considering it doesn't have an agp port Has anyone used one of these processors? from what i can tell from reading, for normal usage you cannot tell they are slower?

Forsome reason i feel compelled to add.. I'd love to disable that driver signing having to press f8 at startup! its danged annoying, considering ican't get a signed 64bitwireless driver, everything else is fine. since theres some kind of vista = usless to people who haven't tried it argument going on, i'd like to say, i've been using vista as my main os since RC1, and since build 5728 i've actually taken xp off repartitioned and now only have vista, i find xp slow in comparsion to vista, i love the search features in vista, at first i thought, Holy c**** what have they done to the start menu now?! but once you try it, its amazing! I also feel like adding, to me, computers are atool, they should be as easy as possible to use, whever i've written software in the past, i've always tried to make it easy for peopel to use, results, my friends who aren't really into computers, find it easy, my friends who are 'elite' at computers find it stupid because its not complicated enough and don't seem to like how they don't feel supieror anymore...at least thats the impression i get, theres a reason we progressed from dos! (either way neither appricate the time it takes to do things! and assume becaus it doesn't look complicated, means it is very simple ) and back to topic, i think vista with nlite would be great! I don't belive there will be a performance difference, but It would be nice to claim some space back and not have so many processes running!

does this norten removal tool clean out the live update feature as well? I've noticed the uninstallers always seem to forget it, along with numerous other things that the good people at norten realise you want left on your computer, but since this program starts at startup i figured its worth being moreso annoyed, I haven't looked into it whatsoever and i have no machine to test it on, and no, i'm not installing norten on my to practise removing it, i feel i might just get peeved off.

o'well, personally i'm not that bothered, But i think to all testers it would be fair to say give a 20% discount coupon or something, however I disagree that because i tested it i should get free final version! but it would be cool! I am annoyed by the pricing of vista however It just means i won't be buying ultimate!

Just wondering, I just downloaded it from the first public beta, what does bug submitting count, whenever a program popped up and said OI this ere is naff, and windows will not run it, and theres a bug submit crash button thing I always clicked send, does that count? i've spend ages waiting for it to upload huuge dump files from programs, I'm not asking for a free vista, I'm happy to use RC2 for free until it runs out however i was just wondering what qualifies! if anyone knows? I think its really good of microsoft to offer free keys tho! can't help but think its for further testing tho, send it out to the people they know will give feedback to let windows update have all the updates needed for release heh

ati's x300 se is avaliable in agp, as is the nvdia 6200 the problem with vista (if the reason you are upgrading is to use the aero interface smoothy, gaming performance does matter as its all in 3D, a friend of mine has a 9600 with 512mb of ram and enabling Aero in that slows it down quite a bit, anyways good luck! and the fx 5200 would more than likely use more power than a x300 or 6200, you would'nt need a new psu to run these cards

any chance it could be the power supply? do you have any non signed drivers installed? on mine the only time its ever bluescreened (since the first public beta) was yeterday when I tried installing newer soundcard drivers, I was actually shocked when i saw the blue screen! vista has been so stable for me. if you turn off the aero graphics does it still randomly crash?

personally i'd go for a x300 card, its got a lot more power than the fx5200, i've been looking up on the best budget card to run vista, and to me it seems like the x300, lots of places have reported the fx5200 to be sluggish when compared to an x300, they are roughly the same price. out of interest what cars are you looking at that require the 250 watts? also if you want to stick with nvidia i'd go for a 6200, which should be able to handle aero easily, its around the same price again!

i have to agree with if it cost less there would be less piracy. ...lets see in my local pc shop i can get windows xp profesional for £90 media edition for £80 home for £60 vista prices from amazon (only place i know of) vista... ultimate £325.00 home premium £224.99 home basic £184.99 does anyone see why people dislike how expensive vista is?

as far as i can see, any NT based os should be able to handle multiple cores, only hyper threading needed special coding for it. the issues i thought were due to licesing, ie windows 200 only handled the processors by the cores it used not physical processors, so if you had a dual quad core computer it wouldn only use 4 cores because its only allowed for use on a computer with 4 processors, not actually sure how many 2000 let you use but you get the point? anyways my point was that i'm sure i read that vista home can handle 2 physical procesors, each with unlimited cores

glad to see other people dislike it as much as me! i'm sure norten used to make usful products before windwos 95... bring back the days of using powequest;s memory manager qemm? to get us out 640kb! pretty sure i didn't dream that one up! i think i shall have to carry a usb drive with norten removal tool incase i ever use a computer willingly with norten on again

off topic a bit, but does anyone else get really frustrated when you use someones comptuer who doesn't really know what theyare on about, who was just bought the newest norten, and defends it to hell and back, using a computer 2 days ago, and i said, when was the last time you reinstalled windows (After waiting 8 minutes to use the desktop i was getting bored) and he replied, never, there is no point, then he was beaming proudly as the norten icon appeared in the systray telling me, i know it slows down the computer, but at least i won't get any virus's now, trying not to laugh at this coment, i suddenly realised that people actually really belive norten is a really good 'internet security suite' and the fact there seemed to be yellow toolbars display various norten stuff everyware was a good thing, has the world gone mad? this version of norten had a nice big button next to the sys tray saying NORTEN in gree with a yellow background, next to the systray icon of norten, then you load up ie a huge toolbar, norten yellow, with big green letters saying FRAUD PROTECTION: ON,i desperatly wanted to turn it off as it was annoying me telling me my computer was beingattacked and it had just stopped another potiential infection, or whatever scare tactics it would randomly pop up (it seems random) to make me fear my own computer, realising i need to subscribe to renew my security each and every passing year. anyways, after waiting 18 minutes for the computer to be come usable (i'm not exagerating, lthough in all fairness there is a lot of junk on there, but it only took 7 minutes to be usable before) i had to use his wifes laptop (which has avast) took under 2 minutes to start, and i asked, how come you don't use avast? and he told me it doesn't do as good a job as norten, I asked how so, and he pointed out he's never had popup's saying its prevented someone from attacking the computer, and the fact he can't notice the laptop is running avast shows that its inferiour as its clearly not doing anything... sorry for my rant, but i'm unemployed for a whole month waiting for a new job to start, have way to much spare time, and been hanging around this forum to much! please feel free to delete this topic! incidently, from what i can tell, since that computer is being protected by norten, the printer scanner, and skype phone have been moved to the laptop the laptop sits infront of the main pc, ... apparently the main pc is to slow to use now, i'm not sure if its just me, but spending £50 on norten is bad enough, installing it, worse, then just discarding the computer completly because it is now to slow is shocking!

is it possible to crete new aero style themes? ie with the 3d?

my worst thing (that i'll admit to) i was sorting out my sisters old pc, decided instead of installing sp2 i'll just make a quick nlited cd with everything slipstreamd, figured it would be quicker, now i thought, it would be so much easier to keep the files and settings using ms's files and settings transfer wizard, so i thought, why not, its easy, its xp, i'm putting xp back on, what sthe problem? so anyways several hours later with my nlited xp2 cd, installed it all up, felt quicker than ever! and then i simply run the files and settings wizard to restore files and, oh, what, files were saved using an earlier version of windows? what? was xp, now xp? what?!?! to my shock pre sp2 settings and files are not compatable with sp2 wizard, ... tried looking on the net, found the tools to extract the files from the archive thing it makes, none worked! not even the ms ones, luckily the other month when i tried vista, vista's migration wizard let me restore the files! although it warned me that the files and settings were from a 'very old' version of windows, and would only let me extract the files and not restore settings (which was fine by me!) for 8 months i had this 1.3 gig recovery file which i couldn't open! sister wasn't to impressed...ah well, all back now, thank god for vista hehe

just thought i'd add, these ati drivers made 3dmark go from 4450 (default drivers) to 5344, i'm assuming thats good! wonder what the next drivers will be like...assuming the retail vista will be better performing! well hopefully with a x1600xt 256mb

lol i voted No and I hate smokers i don't really hate smokers, but i hate the idea of smoking i think its up to anyone who wants to smoke if they wnt to, but i find it highly annoying when a smoke complains to me about his or her rights to smoke, and i think, what the hell, this is the ONLY non smoking bar in this area, there are 12 bars with 200 metres of this place, ALL of them allow smoking, so why go to the *ONLY* non smoking bar to complain about the fact you can't smoke, i get quite touchy because as much as it is their right to sit next to me and smoke, its as much my write to not want someon to blow smoke into my face, however i don't purposly go into places that people smoke heavily to complain about it, i accept that its my choice to go to these places. Strangly enough a lot of bar owners were said they were against banning smoking becuse it would drive away customers, this non smoking place is the only place which is always full, and always has people waiting to get in outside, doesn't that say something? anyways ya, smoke if you want to, jsut don't smoke purely to get touchy about how its your right to smoke. also a friend of mine she is a nurse, well she smokes, but she finds it disgusting when people smoke when pregnant, she delivered her first baby 2 weeks ago, the mother refused to give up smoking, she told me when it was delivered you could smell the smoke on the baby, it was less than a minute old and already smoke stained. I find that disgusting. anyways soz! but i've just had enough of 'its my right to smoke' talk, I love polite smokers, i used to know a girl who whenever she wanted a cigerate she would go outside and smoke not to bother anyone, we didn't even mind her smoking around because she was so nice about it!

so if you install home, it will simply remove the ultimate features?

hrmm i thought nvida had opengl support for ages in their drivers? was expecting the new ati ones to have it although saying that, these drivers are much better, games seem to run a lot smoother, well, i've only tried halo but i can finally run it with the same settings i did in xp and now its smooth before i had to turn down the resolution

you find vista is slower? games run slower i've noticed, well i've only tried a couple, but definatly slower, but using windows feels a lot faster, its more more responsive than xp! saying that i haven't tried the 32bit vista, but i'm assuming its the same type of thing the only thing i hate about vista is the fact i have to press f8 to disable driver signing to get the wireless to work although i tend to just use sleep in vista i found vista was usuable until i put an extra bit of memory in tho! i don't think my computer is that good, was a few years ago, budget processor, budget ram budget, ish video card!

I was just wondering, since when vista comes out and the beta expires and i'm forced to buy since i've now gotten addicted to it and find xp feels slow in comparasion..... ...if i were to buy my home premium vista experiance, would i be able to'upgrade' from my ultimate beta to my shiny home retail box? i'm not saying i would do this, infact i'm certain i will do a clean install, but after looking around i can't find a clear answer, i know you can upgrade from home to ultimate, but to me from ultimate to home would be a downgrade and i can't see anyware that says you can? just curious i get the impression a lot of people will just want to upgrade to the retail when it comes out, just wondering if its possible, or is it in huge writing on the ms site and i just missed it?
