Delete specific file on shutdown?
atomizer replied to JonesDK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
if you're trying to delete files that are in use by windows, you can use unlocker. works like a champ. -
wondering if there's a way to enable and disable hardware with a batch script?

Jeremy, UltraVNC looks pretty sweet. thanks for pointing that one out.

i UPX'd all of FF exe's and dll's i can state for a fact that load time has decreased by about 1 second, both cold and warm. warm is now right about 2 seconds with quite a few plugins. this is without windows prefetching. i never checked CPU usage however.

mmmhmmm exactly what a friend of mine said a few years ago when he "lost" a load of data, including all his emails. it's not incredible at all once you understand the motives. now shall we look into "mirror imaging"?
-
gdogg, if you're not already aware of it, this may be of use to you as well... UPX. i started compressing FF and TB exe's/dll's and noticed a significant decrease in load times, plus the space savings. you just have to be careful what switches you use.

may not help, but you could try the Omega drivers

Batch file to automatically launch and close apps.
atomizer replied to Synomenon's topic in Software Hangout
i'm not good at this and someone more knowledgeable may have a better solution, but this should work fine... TASKKILL /F /IM NameOfSetpointExecutable.exe CD "C:\Program Files\your game\NameOfGameExecutable.exe" START NameOfGameExecutable.exe ECHO waiting for game to end... PAUSE CD "C:\path to setpoint\NameOfSetpointExecutable.exe" START NameOfSetpointExecutable.exe EXIT this will leave the CMD shell running in the background. as soon as you're done with the game, hit any key and you're Logitech exe will start again. more info on "TASKKILL": -
i'm thinking "yes" but i don't know where to point you. you could try searching the net, as well as here (outlook hidden backup). to my knowledge, now matter how hard you try and delete things like your browsing history, emails, names of file attachments, etc., all MS OS's keep a well hidden, possibly encrypted back-up of those items. so well hidden that you may very well not be able to find this stuff from within the OS. you may have to use a Linux OS that can access an NTFS (if that's what you have) partition and, even then, it may be difficult. you could start your quest here. although this was written with 9x in mind, i have confirmed that at least some of it holds true for XP -- including the CORP edition.

if that doesn't work, look for scratches on the CD. if they're not real deep, polish with a light abrasive, like toothpaste or a car polish (not wax).

the "nuts and bolts" way: PSPad (great freeware alternitive to UltraEdit) the WYSIWYG + "nuts and bolts" way: NVU (also free)

ran XP on a P3 800 for a few years. ran great, but i'd consider 512 MB of RAM to be a "preformance" minimum, though it will run on 256.

1) remove side panal from case. 2) duct tape case to top of car. 3) enter car wash. 4) let dry 5) fill case with foam insulation to eliminate future dust build-up (make sure to install RAM first) 6) reinstall side panal

sorry to hear about the theft. i can easily sympathize with you... i live in huntsville AL and, a while back, i had a jeep CJ5. my tools were stolen out of it one night and they smashed my neighbors car window (but didn't take anything). tonight, some f**k threw a lit cigarette in my miata. luckily it landed on a t-shirt i had lying on the seat -- no damage done. i confronted them (it was one of two kids in a truck) and they wouldn't admit to it. now i have their license number and that, along with a friend in the police dept., spells major problems for them once i get an address.

yes, i'm saying that the net shouldn't be regulated and agree with you that, in fact, it is. however, the idea of tolorating what it is you hate in any medium, society, etc., still holds true if you want complete freedom. so am i saying i want an unregulated society? no. i'm willing to trade some freedom for piece of mind. it's just that too much freedom is being sacrificed IMO. there's no doubt in my mind that "our" gov controls us, not the other way around. i think that if the fathers of this country were alive today, it wouldn't be long before they'd organize a milita with the intention of overthrowing the government. as far as the net however, some oasises exist, like Freenet, filesharing, six / four, etc. @vando2k there are many who will disagree with you and although i think you're partially wrong (profits come from every sale, not just corp. sales), there's certainly a twist here worth mentioning: i also d/l music, movies and, sometimes, software. the relevant question, to me, is whether or not i would've bought this material if i didn't d/l it and the answer is an absolute NO. for instance, i haven't bought music in the last 10+ years, yet i've only been downloading it for the last few years. in all my life i've bought 1 movie and went to the theater maybe a dozen times, yet i've only been downloading films in the last few months. and as far as software, if i had to pay for the commercial apps i do have, i'd find alternatives (which i'm mostly doing anyway). and then i'll turn it around even more by stating that, in my case, d/l'ing commercial material has actually caused me to consider buying it -- something that would be unlikely otherwise. for instance, i'm becoming sort of an audio freak and it's not easy to d/l CD quality music. so now, when i go shopping for something, i sometimes find myself lingering around the movie and music sections -- something i stopped doing a long time ago, long before i started d/l'ing.

there's another thread that covers this very well. you might find it if you search. to my knowledge, the differences are negligible -- pro has the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) and a few other tools and i think there's some networking differences as well.

the registry in xp is subject to many of the same problems as any other windows OS -- old, usless keys, entries that reference missing files, etc.. much of the time it is poorly written installers that leave behind sometimes hundreds of keys after uninstalling the program.

yes, data can be recovered from a formatted partition. off the top of my head i don't know of any software, but if you do a search for something like: "data recovery" formatted freeware i'll bet you find something. if it's really important to you you can send the drive to a data recovery specialist.

welcome to MS... sure, we'll allow you to spell check in the free OE software... as soon as YOU BUY office there's plenty of other alternatives for spell checking in OE, WITHOUT installing office. i'll be happy to help should you so desire.

no offense at all, but i strongly disagree with that. i think it would be nice if there just ONE medium that were unregulated. freedom of information. to my knowledge, that's what the internet was all about before i even knew of its existence. freedom however has a price and that price is your decision to allow the posting of information like "how to build a bomb", or child pornography, or anything else you disagree with. it you want freedom, then you have to be willing to tolerate what it is you hate most. that's the way it works.

protection... methlabs - peerguardian ah, should also warn that this is NOT bullet-proof protection. like an anti-virus, it can only block what it knows about.

in addition to running memtest, you might want to check with the vendor of your RAM to see what the voltage should be set at, as well as the timings.
-
as far as i know, you can get any MS OS to run on it, but it may take some tweaking/stripping to do it. have you looked at nLite? this can make the job of stripping down WIN 2k/XP a very easy task and you could (depending on how much you remove) end up with an installation that is very small and uses fewer resources.

and whatever you do, NEVER tear the tags off mattresses either!
