if it did happen, i would guess that it wouldn't be worth removing the ads. it may so limited in functionality that it wouldn't be worth it.

anyone know of something similar to 'folderbox' that enables explorer to display either dual panes or, better yet, tabs for different folders? i'm not looking for a shell replacement, just a tweak or extension.

[Question] - Windows XP -- PWS (personal web server)
atomizer replied to hekevin's topic in Windows XP
for a full featured package: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html for a dirt simple test server: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/sswww.htm -
in theory, the lower the latency the better. in practice, don't get fooled by response times. it is my understanding that the response times as posted by the manufacturer are typically optimistic and, sometimes, blatant lies. also, they are measured by the amount of time it takes to switch from black to white, which is typically fast. however, changes from other shades of colors can take much longer. in short, an 8ms panel doesn't mean there won't be ghosting. a good source of info is tomshardware and whatever user reviews you can find. reference: http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/05/26/vie...overdrive_lcds/

[Help] - Problem when converting NTFS to FAT32 - [Resolved]
atomizer replied to pauluk83's topic in Windows XP
i don't know what flavor of linux you're using (and it may not matter), but Suse can read (not write) to NTFS partitions. others do as well. -
first of all, your comments are partially directed at me and i didn't write it. however this came as no surprise. what is it that you've torn apart? disproved? you haven't provided any technical details or sources of information whatsoever, even regarding the use of the pagefile. and the pagefile issue, as well as other items you chose to comment on, have little to do with the core of the article, which is where the author (again, not me) feels MS is heading and he's packed quite a bit of evidence to back up his point of view. did you visit and study any of the references? also, don't forget that i'm running XP, however i'm not about to allow that to cloud my judgment. i have heard meaningful evidence from 2 law enforcement officers (1 personal relationship and the other through phone calls and email), one being in computer forensics, about the severe invasion of privacy that is going on behind our backs as far MS OS's storing and hiding information. when asked if this information could be accessed by MS without my knowledge, that's where they seemed to draw the line and didn't really want to comment any further. then i run into the article i linked to, and the papers/articles/websites the author linked to, and gets down right overwhelming... the fact that the article is nearly 3 years old is largely irrelevant, unless changes have been made that would affect its accuracy. have changes been made to MS policy? if so, where?

I've just come accross the most informative, disturbing and well written article that I have ever read reguarding Microsoft and their products. If you use MS products, as I do, you need to check this out... http://www.futurepower.net/microsoft.htm

why not use nLite? http://www.nliteos.com/

the only thing i can suggest is checking out the tools on the 'sysinternals' site and see if anything there can help you. http://www.sysinternals.com/

@LLXX although i like XP, i do miss the raw simplicity of 98 sometimes and agree with much of what you had to say regarding "Reasons to run 98se" (though i've never run SE, just 98). most of your reasons for not liking XP can be easily overcome however... size: one word: nLite - you can cut the size WAY down and still have every bit of functionality you require. a typical installation size for me is about 1/2 of the default and i'm not exactly a 'minimalist' (others cut far more out). complex: no argument there - services, hidden services, component services, group policy editor, etc., etc.. slow: not as slow if you lighten it up, though a P133 is certainly an extreme. i ran XP on a P3 800 however and it seemed to be more responsive than 98 with very little tweaking. inefficient: not so with minor tweaking (turning off themes, disabling unneeded services, uninstalling typical windows junk, etc.). difficulty of maintenance: if the NTFS filesystem is easily corrupted, i have yet to experience any problem and i've been using NTFS and XP for several years (over 3). on the other hand, 98 produced filesystem errors on a regular basis. this point is moot anyway since you can format FAT if you want to. insecure: more insecure then 98? maybe so, but this is easily overcome. 98, XP, whatever; you should be running a F/W (which is included in XP) and AV regardless. XP can be hardened pretty well because of the configuration tools it provides. anyway, i'm not trying to disuade anyone from using whatever OS they want, just pointing out possible flaws in your argument

try uninstalling 'norton' and see what happens. if that works, please post back.

what about 'safe mode' and choose 'last known good'?

for now, and only for a short time yet. nLite has come a long way and using it, at least for me, is pure joy. WPA can easily be disabled a variety of ways. IF the product key is ever transmitted, and i'd like to see any evidence you have to that effect, i seriously doubt it's transmitted unencrypted. the whole "activation" scheme is a flaky joke right from the beginning and i agree that MS has it's head up its behind in this regard. however, like anything else, there's ways around this crap.

@joll99 i meant for you to type a url in windows explorer, not internet explorer (yes, you can access a network from windows explorer) just to see what happens. and the firefox extension i linked to was to try another method to test IE since it uses the IE engine. other than that, i doubt i can be of much help, other then to suggest maybe disabling all start-up programs and see what happens. there's a link to "autoruns" in my sig that may assist you.

this is just a stab in the dark (and i don't use IE), but is IE set to use a proxy possibly? what happens if you open a Windows Explorer (not IE) and type a url? and just for the hell of it, try this... http://ietab.mozdev.org/

you'll find some utils here that may help you as well... http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndTh...sUtilities.html especially: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/CpuMon.html

Hi all! Just wanted to mention a game that i've found to be incredibly fun: CUBE CUBE is a free, open source, multi-platform (OpenGL), multi-player First Person Shooter that may look familiar to you Quake people. It is actively developed and has a good community of followers/supporters and dev's, the head-honcho being 'Wouter van Oortmerssen'. Compared with cutting-edge games that run on the new Unreal and Source engines, CUBE is step backward in time in many ways. However, what sets it apart from the more advanced engines is that it's just plain all-out fast, furious and FUN! Someone once defined CUBE as "You kill stuff. The end". It's a refreshing relief from the clutter and complicity of many commercial titles. Another trait worthy of mention is its in-game level editing capabilities. Level editing takes on a whole new dimension and is incredibly simple. http://www.cubeengine.com/
