  1. found it here: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RemoteRecover.html however it's not free. they also have another similar product, except it works over a serial (null modem) cable. google around and see what else you can find.
  2. try this search. hope it helps.
  3. yes, there is! i'm not sure where i saw the s/w, but try http://www.sysinternals.com/
  4. Of course. I have a little 3d graphics demo - 5 minutes of software-rendered animated scenes - which runs on any computer from a 286 @12MHz and up, with only VGA graphics, but very good graphics. Most surprising is the fact that this demo is not some multi-megabyte set of files; it's a single 4096 bytes file. look at HL2 for instance; i don't know what the install size is, but i know my HL directories have measured up to several GB in the past. currently at just over 5 GB. then look at CUBE. installation size: ~30 MB. from a graphics standpoint, CUBE isn't exactly state-of-the-art, but it's really not bad. from an efficiency standpoint, there is no comparison - CUBE loads lightening fast, it's small and everything works! it runs on multiple platforms and isn't dependent on screwy windows components, Steam, or any other such crap. it uses the OpenGL standard and, to top it off, it's free and open source and has won several awards. from a 'fun' standpoint, well, i've probably had as much fun with CUBE as any game.
  5. i've done it both ways and never had any problems that i noticed, but i know that a complete format is recommended by a lot of websites. sometimes, if i'm in a hurry or just testing an installation, i'll do a quick format.
  6. hmmm... can you get into safe mode? if so, you should be able to install from there. if not, you could do a repair or parallel install. or you could wait until someone more knowledgeable replies
  7. well, that was good for a quick laugh
  8. i would guess that the drive is going to fail. i had the same thing happen and i read up on it; the 'clicking' is the heads banging off the case.
  9. you could use a partition manager, but why not just insert the 98 installation disk and install the OS? the 98 disk should have the partition tools and it will automate the process for you. i'd also suggest doing the complete format (overwrite everything on the drive with 0's) rather than the quick format. post back if you need more help.
  10. MP3Tag is a great app! but there is nothing that i'm aware of that simply auto-tags. everything i've come across uses a database and requires some manual input.
  11. that's correct i believe. i have the same option in my BIOS, though my case doesn't support it. yours probably does.
  12. if you need to recover the data from the hard disk, there are a lot of resources for doing that, both professional and DIY. just search around.
  13. you might run into a brick wall trying to access BIOS with a USB, wireless keyboard.
  14. one of the problems with WYSIWYG editors is that they write sloppy code and it's really easy to make it worse and worse once a mistake is made. i don't know how to write much HTML/JS or any language either, so i try to be very careful how i edit. the KISS (keep it simple stupid) rule is good advise. my advise would be to look at your source code and try to find the problems. if you keep the pages simple, everything should work fine regardless of the resolution. although i haven't built any projects with it yet, i started playing with NVU and it seems OK. maybe these can be of use also: http://www.aeiwi.com/webmaster.html http://www.tips-tricks.com/index.asp http://validator.w3.org/detailed.html
  15. i hate to see someone try to make the switch and end up frustrated. i did the same thing when i first tried FF - i went right back to IE. then i got tired of security updates and the hidden cache directories that can't be easily deleted and having to run 2 or 3 third-party apps to control adware/spyware/scripts/activeX, etc., etc., etc.. i'll take a stab at trying to help you out... IE loads fast only because components are preloaded in memory during windows boot. if you want, you can do the same with FF a couple of ways. the harder way is to create a RAM disk. the easy way is to install Firefox Preloader. yet another way is to install a custom build. these are optimized, 3rd party builds. the moox builds are very popular, though this website is down for the time being. i'm not sure what you mean by being able to see a webpage being constructed as it loads. perhaps this was due to a bandwidth problem between you and the server. FF renders pages fast and if you want to tweak it further all the options are there, like pipelining, max requests, etc., etc.. a lot of options can be accessed by typing "about:config" in the address bar. there's also an extension that sets a lot of options via a simple GUI. it's Fasterfox. (note to all that use this extension: Fasterfox sets 'nglayout.initialpaint.delay' (Initial Paint Dely in the GUI) to '0' and i don't agree with that. should be set to 250+ depending on bandwidth). changing the menu/tool bars is a snap! configurability is where FF really, really shines! just like in IE, R-click a toolbar > customize. you can drag and drop almost anything, anywhere. here's a screenshot of some of FF's capabilities. by default, FF is pretty slim and doesn't offer many 'toys'. this is one of the reasons i like it so much - you build it to fit YOU. there are a ton of excellent extensions that add functionality to FF. see the following for a taste: https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/ here's some extensions i would highly recommend to new FF users: Adblock Filterset.G Updater Adblock Plus All-In-One Sidebar Googlebar Lite NoScript Permit Cookies Tab Mix Plus
  16. this sounds like a software problem. sounds like the software is loading its own display driver, especially sine you mention that the display goes black for a short time. this sounds fishy to me and i would suspect that application may be sub-par. you may want to find something else and if you need any input on good free or non-free graphics editing applications, say so.
  17. sorry fellas. link fixed.
  18. UPDATE: link fixed: MSWindowsServices_v0.4.zip i'm attempting to come up with a very comprehensive, newbie friendly windows services guide. the guide is primarily a conglomerate of bits and pieces of information extracted from a lot of other guides, with my own descriptions and experiences/knowledge thrown in. if anyone wants to help work on it, i would be very grateful for the assistance. full credit will be given. this started off as a compilation of info that will be used in nLite. the purpose is to provide meaningful descriptions and 'layered presets' to help nLite users get through the services section in record time. the colored columns that you will see are the presets, of which multiple items can be selected. however, i plan to submit this guide to other places rather than just limiting it to nLite. the guide is in spread sheet form. i use OpenOffice, but the archive contains both XLS and ODS formats (for MS office and OO, respectively). version history, credits, references and other info is at the bottom of the sheet. if you have any issues with formatting, let me know. note also that there are 3 sheets (3 tabs at the bottom of the sheet); 2K, 2K SVR and XP. i'm primarily interested in the XP part. the link is: MSWindowsServices_v0.4.zip if you want to be informed of new versions, send me an email address.
  19. @No6 - that time is pretty much here, don't ya think? the template has been laid with ad supported shareware, demo's, etc.. i'd like to think that people won't tolerate ads in software they pay for, but i'm already wrong there. for the most part however i think that advertising will continue to be prevalent in share/demo-ware as it is now and paid for apps will remain ad-free for some time to come. then there's the open source people, who i admire so much, and who aren't motivated by the almighty $$$.
  20. more useful extensions in my sig...

ello2U2 chop the size of XP... hmmm... how about nLite (http://www.nliteos.com) and be sure to read the forum too... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=89 also of interest... http://ryanvm.msfn.org/
  22. problem is, i doubt that an extension can provide that, though i may be wrong. i may be looking at a shell replecement and, so far, i haven't found any i really like.
  23. welcome! there's a lot of talented people that hang around here. unfortunately, i'm not one of them
