  1. Ahh if it has a Realtek then it's the same as mine. You should get it directly from the Realtek site not some unknown one. Let me see if I can dig it up. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false Auto installation program (Support Win98SE/WinME) v5.708 2008/11/24
  2. I installed the 98SE using SATA to USB adapter. I later migrated it to the SATA port so it's running directly off the Intel Sata Controller now in pure SATA mode. I tried SATA and SATA IDE Compatibility mode and it still booted. For the USB cards I've recently tested the NEC and the VIA ones. You can find more about my tests here on it. I got Mame to run as well as DOSBOX on it. The Ensoniq PCI card I think is encountering some kind of problem either because it is too old being made in the early P1 days and can't handle the multiple streams of audio I am putting it through and it bombs out as if the sound card is stuttering stuck on the same sound. I'm going to try other Sound cards later but I am convinced the Sound card or the drivers or a combination of both just can't handle the Z77's power. That's why I was asking you to test the SB Audigy 1 PCI card to let me know if it worked on the Z97 or the AM4. But your AM4 you can't get to the desktop so far? If you can find out if your Z97 works fine with the SB Audigy 1 PCI then that would be good news since it has EAX. Did you figure out how to underclock your Ryzen to the lowest speed yet? <<The 8111E onboard-lan to be used, for lack of free slots, but, well, since we now have the knowledge how to use the <<NDIS2-driver on those, it's possible. Remind me what you did here and I'll double check if any of my other MBs carry that onboard LAN. I think that's the chipset of the PCIe card I used for the MultiOS setup so it might be a coincidence this chipset might be the best choice to use for 9X/ME LAN card on the PCIe slot. I still think it might be possible in the future to hack the Intel HD Graphics HDMI video and audio out and run some sort of 7950GT 9X/ME video card with Sound Blaster emulation on it. This might end up being more powerful and use less wattage and save you a few internal PCIe and PCI slots on the motherboard for USB cards instead all while staying completely inside 98SE or ME. I don't think most people would use Z77 for 98SE gaming but I don't see why those would go up in price. It's the much older MBs with ISA slots that have you paying out of your nose. I hope to see Z68/Z77/Z87/Z97 to drop like it has been while Z170/Z270 and the AM4 MBs take over. Once I master the Z77 trick it might help me get it to work on AM4. Most have forgotten old school DOS skills to try it on such a modern chipset. I'm just one of the few that uses that method for installing all my OS DOS -> W10. Plus you have to remember before PCIe became in use most people had pretty much switched over to 2000 and XP. WinME purposely hid DOS so that didn't help and most newer motherboards didn't provide 98SE drivers anymore around the late 900 series chipsets so the people who are doing 98SE gaming are using P4 and some socket 775 MBs with AGP slots. If these CPUs could be passively cooled I would go for them. But since my original idea was to do it on the Z77 years ago I just finally had the time to dig into it after I figured out how to get the USB mouse working again which was the main obstacle that stalled the project. (The serial mouse worked but I preferred using an optical mouse).
  3. What are you trying to do? If you just want the minimum FireFox that I recommend for XP-64bit use v43.0.4. It is patched and works for Youtube 1080P and has SHA-256 cert. You can use the 52.0.3ESR but I found it laggier after testing almost each FireFox version recently to find what was broken and still working on multiple websites.
  4. Yeah the Network card seems a bit fishy to me. I have some older DFE's but they are PCI only. I found a Realtek PCIe one that could do 98SE/XP/W7 and I think it worked in W10 also. But I have to test it out for 98SE to verify. It's one of those really short PCIe cards.
  5. If any of those two Jaclaz recommends uses the ISO format I would go with one of those since you could use Daemon Tools for 2000, XP, and up. The VirtualCD used a proprietary format making it only usable with VirtualCD but it was able to save me from putting the original CDs into the tray. It could assign multiple drive letters for each CD in case your program used more than one CD you could set it up so each Drive Letter = Disc Number. The other way is Manually ejecting the VirtualCD then inserting another one in its place to save drive letters but I found that burdensome to do.
  6. I thought the KernelEX4.5.2 was for 9X to run XP software like the Browser? Are you trying to port KernelEx for Windows 2000 from BWC?
  7. He linked to two eBay items and in the title you can see the Chipset. The network card I can't find out the chipset.
  8. What purpose will this do for XP?
  9. The best one I used from 9X/ME days was VirtualDrive from Farstone. But I can't remember which was the last version before they went to 2000 and XP. Maybe version 7? It's been so long I can't remember but it was very easy to use.
  10. Just for the sake of this thread (which by the way was not created by me but my messages were consolidated and put into this new thread). Anything above 512MB using 98SE without any commercial Program or commercial Ram patch or modifying the .INIs or any of the Windows system files found in the Windows 98 installation folder. Those are the only requirements. But I've been able to test 8GB now so if any updates on 8GB or higher stable methods with the above requirements are met you can also list those users. I'm focusing on the Z68 and higher chipsets since most 9X/ME users are below this have been proven to work already using DDR2 which is easier to use the 512MB memory chip trick and possibly add an additional 64MB up to 256MB memory chip without stability issues. So all AGP graphics cards aren't going to be possible on these except PCIe and PCI based graphics cards. Stability is the key to ensuring the method is fool proof and not just being able to boot into 98SE as it if crashes then it would be a pointless method. So if you're seeing Windows error pop ups booting into 98SE's desktop that is a sign it failed. So if anyone has any recommended "stability" testing programs or methods I will apply them to see if they pass.
  11. This is what I had to do on the Z77. After a clean install on your X99 did you have to manually add the PCI Bus in order to detect your cards? Have there been any real stubborn devices that you installed that just won't detect no matter what or ones that you nearly gave up but found a way to detect them?
  12. Yes those INF would only provide names to devices that don't require manual driver installation. Just to make it look nice on your Device Manager. Installing XP onto the Z170 you will find a lot of these unknown devices since no XP Chipset file exists but seeing you have one for 98SE it should be possible to port a similar one for XP but this doesn't affect XP from working and just more for aesthetics of having no ugly yellow questions marks and it just makes it harder to navigate which devices really need the drivers but that can easily be solved by examining the Hardware IDs and using Windows 10 to check the same Hardware ID. I just focus on the Video, Audio, USB, and LAN. All else aren't as vital but I did at one point try to find every driver or at least get rid of the ? on a laptop and you end spending a lot of wasted time because some drivers just don't exist for the OS so they will stay with it. That power problem sound scary. I usually keep my systems running 24/7 for burn in test and most while I am awake before allowing it to go non stop. But so far I've been lucky buying fanless power supplies on eBay. It either works or it doesn't and if it runs fine for a week it's usually a good sign but I don't stress it to the max so who knows if there is a problem with it if I ran triple Sli cards on it. I haven't tried XP-64 for a daily OS so I'd be curious how FireFox 64 bit interacts with that OS since it can natively handle over 3.2GB > 128GB max I believe. I am still experiencing the over 1.5GB -> 2.7GB memory usage range sluggishness then to complete stalling to near freezing and needing to end task. If you do get a chance to play around on the XP 64-bit try the FF 43.0.4 64-bit version I left a link in one of the other threads on Browsers that work on XP by Aiko Chan. http://www.msfn.org/board/profile/408069-~♥aiko♥chan♥~/ It should run all websites properly and has SHA-256 cert. so newer site upgrades won't make it obsolete and best of all 1080P Youtube videos work fine instead of stuck at 240P for the moment.
  13. I had tried DDR4 in late 2016 on the Skylake Z170. DOS can boot up on it but certain programs malfunctioned which most of you probably wouldn't have known about or used as I seem to be the first to have used it. However at the time DDR4's lowest RAM capacity was 4GB and I wasn't interested in installing 98SE on it and the MB I was testing had no PCI slots. I had not tested the Z77 chipset to verify it could work with 98SE except the ability to install to the desktop but the USB mouse didn't work properly so I retired the project since it wasn't vital. I might revisit the Z170 after a successful Z77 since I have cracked the 8GB memory limit in my tests then it should work with the 4GB DDR4 I had used for early testing on the Z170. But I'm more curious about AM4 Ryzen but I was planning to hold out until they released their first APU CPU for it. But this could be after the board has shut down unless it can continue for a few more months or these get released soon. Fast forward to the Z77 I just finished installing the 6600 GT and it worked with the modified drivers. But it leaves a shutdown issue where you cannot go straight to pure DOS without rebooting. And yes I've read about the shutdown patch but I will be experimenting later with older driver versions to see what effect using a PCIe card will cause. This is the first time testing any PCIe card with 98SE with the drivers working. Originally my plan years ago was to test it on a Socket 775 MB but now that I'm able to have a completely fanless 98SE system running I'm going to keep pushing this idea to get it done on the Z77 which will be able to run DOS/9X/ME/2K/XP/Vista/W7/W10 and purposely skipping the 8.0/8.1.
  14. Ensoniq PCI Sound card tested audio works for regular sound effects. There was a MIDI wavetable issue now I have patched it for 2MB, 4MB, and 8MB options. Canyon.Mid and Passport.Mid worked. Testing of 98SE DOS Prompt running DOS Games, DOS BOX Sound Blaster Emulation, and MAME testing next. Result: Dos Prompt running DOS Game works DOS BOX works MAME works Issues: Ensoniq PCI card sometimes flakes out need to test other modern sound cards.
  15. I underclocked my system to the lowest speed possible before installing. Can you test how low you can set Core Ratio to reduce to the lowest MHz possible on the Ryzen? Also see if there is a BIOS option to reduce from 6 cores to 1 core. This will drop the heat down and maybe you can remove or unplug the CPU fan? Try 6600 GT card 256MB instead of the 7600GT. Copy 98SE install CD folder to the SSD and run the 98SE install from the SSD directly. Do you have a SATA to USB adapter? If internal SATA 98 install doesn't work try installing via USB 2 port not USB 3 using SATA to USB adapter. If it can install 98SE then you can try the standard nVidia drivers first for 6600 GT card.
  16. I didn't make this thread so someone put this into one and it looks like enough commenting to assume no one has done it successfully for above 512MB using non commercial memory patching or Windows file patching to do it without stability problems. Okay I tested a new capacity barrier successfully since 4GB DDR4 is looming as the most likely low end memory install size but I have seen a 2GB DDR4 somewhere but probably harder to find and pointless. Getting 98SE installed on a system with 8GB of memory installed without using a commercial RAM patch? Basically a 98SE system with 8GB or more of memory installed and installing Windows 98SE from scratch and completing the setup process. There should be NO tweaking of the Windows .INI files and absolutely NO patching of the Windows VMMs or any other Windows system folder files? I will move on to some gaming and stability tests after video and sound card and properly configured... This may prove interesting for Ryzen for my next future test of migrating my installation method... Ragnargd don't lose hope yet...(Ryze stalled). But nVidia cards 512MB x 6 = 3GB how much 98SE memory would each card consume? Looks like I'm 5GB over the stability mark of theoretical max video card hardware installed. It would be lucky to get 3 Dual slot graphics card into my system and I can barely fit 1 massive one. Two dual slotters would mean no PCI card slots could be used since they overlap my PCI slots.
  17. Good info LoneCrusader. Those X Prefix Intel Chipsets you listed are all the enthusiast level consumer motherboard so it's sort of the server class level for gaming usually. I have the last Intel X79 spare but never tried X99. X99 could be hacked to do XP using that motherboard. Any OS plans aside from 98SE for it? What's the top end benchmark game you have tested with your GeForce 7950GT? The Z77 didn't all come with integrated GPUs it depends on which CPU as some are just like the X79/X99. There are some Xeons that work on the Z77 that have no iGPU. Also I did some testing and the Intel iGPU can crack the 512MB graphics memory issue without a problem. I'll have to do some extra tests with benchmarks to see how it performs compared to the discrete graphics card. << The Z87 or Z97 (not sure which) somewhere but I think it had a power problem What kind of power problem? Did it shut down but leave you on that it is safe to shut down screen? The Audio paired with the Video would be minimal gaming proof of concept. I can already be certain just installing 98SE on modern hardware is possible but without further testing of video and audio drivers at the minimum it could be a dud. The LAN is just a bonus if you want to get on the internet but from what I've heard now 98SE browsing is pretty much gimped so LAN now is just for network sharing or visiting older sites to download files. I also have a Realtek LAN card that should work on 98SE but will have to test it out to confirm. I was able to get the Ensoniq PCI audio card to get audio output. I was dreading this wouldn't work. I always liked that 98 Intro tune. The last time I heard it was on the Sound Blaster ISA. Some error about the MIDI Waveset driver issue I have to troubleshoot as it's causing some sort of problem. Then move on to test other Creative Lab models if I have time. The USB 3 ports don't work at all even in no driver mode once inside 98SE so you can find out if it is true on your X99. The USB 2 ports are still good for USB keyboard in my test but didn't work for the USB mouse. I tried testing a USB 2 card and the USB mouse works in it but so far no USB storage devices are working. I'm not using any Windows file patching so far and I tried both SATA and SATA IDE Compatibility Mode and 98SE didn't care either way so far 8GB no issue installed. Will push to 32GB later just for proof of stability. Now for the system stability test. I was planning on testing it with the 3DMark03 but on the XP system it seems to say it's missing a lot of necessary hardware to work which was confusing since it should work on 98, 2000, XP but I will try it on the 98SE system to see if I get the same issues. Did you have any particular stability test software you used to confirm the system was stable in your eyes?
  18. PS/2 Keyboard Port - working PS/2 Keyboard USB Keyboard works on USB 2 rear ports no drivers. USB Mouse control failure on USB 2 rear ports no drivers. VIA USB 2 card functional drivers - USB mouse working, USB keyboard working, USB storage not working NEC USB 2 card functional drivers - USB mouse working, USB keyboard working, USB storage not working USB mouse can't operate on USB 3 ports. USB keyboard can't operate on USB 3 ports.
  19. Acknowledged. Probably the jumping around between the two forums I use the most. I sometimes forget which I am in with over 200 tabs open at times at the top the browser tabs don't have a separate logo for a different forum. It usually requires going to very top or looking at the very bottom of the page and I'm usually in the middle of the thread reading at times or left at that position when moving to another tab. I noticed there is a dark blue bar separating each message and also one at the top and bottom. Could the Subject of the forum be embedded into that dark blue area somehow or as an example while in the 9X/ME forum a Microsoft Windows Logo of 95/98/ME OS be stamped in that blue bar area ? Also when starting a reply/post the grey bar area between "Notify me of replies" and "Submit Reply" this forum title, topic, and OS logo could be added there as well.
  20. 98SE works with over 512MB installed without modifying Windows system files or memory patching. Tried using a Blu-ray SATA drive can copy files but strange behavior when a disc is left in tray when loading into Windows.
  21. This is the 9X neutral zone. We must maintain peace at all costs in order to save MSFN. All is related to that main mutual goal of getting 98SE to work on his motherboard. MrMateczko is using a 100 series motherboard which I have a Z170 and probably the only member active or inactive with one. Unless you have a 100/200 Series or Z170/Z270 to assist aside from the X99? Otherwise shields down and decloak and disarm disruptors on the Warbird. It is not a good day to die at least not till 25 days from now which hopefully can be avoided. Do not engage the self-destruct sequence. Now you got me to geek out. Must resist. There is... "One" Liight!!!! err Month...
  22. This is the easier method if HDMI audio can be used. DOSBOX takes care of Sound Blaster emulation so a crisper sound experience and less cable clutter using HDMI video. I will have to test USB ports later. The on board USB2 ones may work but USB3 will probably be a big problem on newer chipsets so HDMI audio option would be required. No more PCI slots on some newer motherboards unless there is a PCIe sound card with Windows 98 driver that exists (Preferably a PCIex1 short card). Also running out of internal slot space so I must remove the network card to test that option. Hmmm on board might be Realtek Audio so maybe another option?
  23. This capture worked for 3.9: (Not corrupted zip) http://web.archive.org/web/20060303084650/http://paullee.ru/download/regv389.zip I will hunt for the newer ones later. Only one more requirement for portable 98SE gaming now. DOSBOX working. No more Memory patching requirement. Intel HD Graphics Hdmi Audio port to 98SE sound device = HDMI audio to TV instead of traditional 3.5mm analog sound quality.
