  1. Look at this link: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/95-microsoft-software-products/ It will on the same tier as all these subforums listed there. the new "D.O.S. - Disk Operating System" subforum will be at the very bottom of the list under the last subforum listed there labeled: "Other Microsoft Products Microsoft Office 97-2016 Microsoft Beta Discussion Discuss Other Microsoft Products and Betas." Just for a little more clarity: Root Directory-> M.S.P. Parent Directory-> D.O.S. (SubDirectory of M.S.P.) Home -> Microsoft Software Products -> D.O.S. (Disk Operating System)
  2. GTA IV works properly in XP and probably improved performance with extra cores and running the entire game off a Ramdrive. No comparison to running vs 98SE off a AHCI SATA hard drive you have issues with. XP will work on this chipset. https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200144866-PC-System-Requirements-for-GTA-IV Need for Speed Carbon also better suited for XP. https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/Requirements/need-for-speed-carbon/10517?p=r Fallout 3 perfect candidate for XP with Ramdisk install. https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/Requirements/fallout-3/10793?p=a The Witcher 1 also another. https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/the-witcher/10661 You should only choose 9X/ME specific software that can't be run on 2000 or XP for your 9X system use. These four titles are XP compatible ones so you're going to see a vast improvement running them on XP on a quad core or better using a GTX 960 up to a Titan X and the game installed to the Ramdrive. Maybe you know some exclusive 9X titles as these would be better candidates for stability testing. I don't see the point in running them in an older OS where it will perform worse since you will be stuck at 1 core efficiency without a superior GPU from the GTX 900 series if the software already supports XP. An AMD Radeon HD 7450 would perform way better than your card and use less wattage and have no fans to deal with on some models. Save the GPU fan mileage on the hardcore 9X exclusives that don't run on XP. As for 98SE OS as a whole, if it didn't include DOS compatibility or Pure DOS when it was released I don't think many would have used it except for MS Office products sort of like Windows 3.1. 95 was probably the worst in the early days of stability and DOS was always more stable and 98SE was improved.
  3. Did System 2 and 3 fresh install 98SE clean with the 1GB on board or did you have to reduce the memory capacity first and add it back later? Some good hardware choices for the sound cards. I got a few Hercules but they were more ancient pre CGA.
  4. No read what I wrote: How it will look after being added into MSFN. [Microsoft Software Products] Older Windows NT-Family OSes Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 2000/2003/NT4 Windows 9x/ME Windows 9x Member Projects Other Microsoft Products Microsoft Office 97-2016 Microsoft Beta Discussion Discuss Other Microsoft Products and Betas. DOS - Disk Operating System <--- This is the subforum just as "Windows 9x/ME" is the subforum of "[Microsoft Software Products]" Discuss using IBM PC-DOS, MS-DOS and other DOS variants and related DOS software <--- This is the description of the subforum "DOS" or "D.O.S. - Disk Operating System" to be more descriptive (in case someone reading Spanish assumes 2), just as "Discuss Other Microsoft Products and Betas" describes this subforum "Other Microsoft Products Microsoft Office 97-2016 Microsoft Beta Discussion". If someone wanted to create a topic in the subforum "DOS" they can create a title for example called using MS-DOS, using PC-DOS, using DR-DOS, how to use PC-Tools, et cetera as long as it should be related to DOS. Just as currently in the "Windows 9X/ME" subforum anyone can post a topic regarding Windows 95, 98, or ME. As for a CP/M section or an IBM OS/2 subforum you can propose that and see what happens. Neither of these two were as popular as D.O.S. today and seeing there is already resistance to adding a D.O.S. subforum it may be less likely to be approved in comparison. They are also not Microsoft Products so I'm not sure how they would fit on MSFN? The fraction of users using those other two Operating Systems is probably so small. Will we be adding TOS next or Amiga OS? P.S. Operating System 2 like Vista was too ahead of its time as the hardware wasn't powerful enough for it. People cared about boot times back then even I dreaded booting Windows 95A on a 486. I remember trying to install OS/2 on a 386 with multiple floppies and by the time I finished installing it and played around with it for an hour I had enough as there were no OS/2 specific software I had to make use of it and wiped it back to DOS. Today it could be a much different story using a virtual machine and I believe it was much prettier than Windows 3.1 in comparison but maybe today it looks awful.
  5. I always thought it was strange there wasn't one on MSFN. I examined the Forums. Here is where it should be added at the very bottom of the "[Microsoft Software Products]" list below "Other Microsoft Products". Added as "DOS - Disk Operating System". Since it is an official Microsoft Product it does belong to this board. Actually you could also say without DOS there wouldn't be Windows. If you need someone to super moderate that group on the side so you're not constantly moderating it maybe I can help you out. I'm a heavy DOS user most of my life so it's not going to be to hard to filter out what doesn't belong there. Also some Windows 3.X, and 9X users probably would make use of that forum so it wouldn't necessarily be a dead zone seeing 9X/ME is still pretty active here. How it will look after being added into MSFN. 6. 2K Pro was my favorite OS over 98SE (Multitasking Browser tabs in the hundreds with Internet Explorer before it became a dangerous browser) and uptime stability ran up to a month at times which was amazing and a relatively small OS non bloat size even compared to XP then gave it a special place in my heart. XP ran like a snail back in those days. The only shame was (at the time) no true DOS command prompt access (not the Command Prompt) or it would have been the best OS. If MS had not stopped supporting or forced XP to dominate I think I would still be using it today and be right there with you Tommy. But now processors are so fast and space isn't an issue XP is still the next best thing and they are trying their best to eliminate it even though 2014 is over 3 years ago. XP is still kicking on the newest Intel chipsets so far which at one point we thought Haswell was the coffin for it... @Tommy Are you still using Windows 2000 because of the Windows Activation factor that XP added or is there some other reason?
  7. This is just a quick voting poll on: Which Multiple Operating Systems and Memory Installed are you using on your single computer? (Optional) You may elaborate on your computer system here and your uses for it.

  14. I got a Microsoft Lifecam HD-6000 but it detects but no driver in 98SE. In XP any Webcam can be hooked up and you can display the video without needing any software through My Computer. Was there any 9X/ME generic webcam driver or software to use any USB webcam on it?
  15. I have a few of these. Let's see what you can do. These might be a good 98SE PCIe network card. Very affordable on eBay. I've been messing with the 98SE/ME drivers and either they were not added for this card or simply can't work with it. But the NDIS2-driver method we can give this a try. Not sure if ragnargd ever got his replacement card so this might be helpful later. 16. Looks like the AsRock Z270 is still going strong with Serial Com Port headers. 9 of their 12 Motherboards still carry it (75%). 17. Once the 98SE install is done and on the desktop and after the internal Intel USB drivers are loaded or the NUSB you can plug the USB mouse onto it. I would still leave the USB Keyboard -> PS/2 adapter hooked to the PS/2 port. Once you exit to real DOS you lose access to it if you plugged it to one of the Intel USB 2.0 ports. If you're just sticking inside 98SE and never planning to exit to real DOS then you could use the USB mouse -> PS/2 adapter to PS/2 port and hook the USB keyboard to any USB 2.0 port instead. Hooking a USB mouse to these ports before a proper USB driver or NUSB is added the USB mouse is uncontrollable moving all over the place and totally unusable at least on the Z77. Older chipsets could have a more positive result and behave. Been awhile since I tested 95 but I've always used a serial mouse on that OS. Whether it works or boots with or without it would be strange that 98SE can do it but not 95? I can't recall ever having a serial mouse not plugged in so maybe I haven't seen this error that it won't boot into 95 without one. Does this apply to 95A, 95B, and 95C? What about 98FE and ME? I'm trying to think back but Windows 3.1 might have worked without a mouse but being the DOS days I've always used a mouse or had it connected and an external modem on the other port. A lot of tabbing and arrows and enter keys to get around as those serial mouse often got dirty and tracking was frustrating. The modern motherboards I've seen with the Com port headers are Asrock. There might be a few Asus with these as well. But I've only inspected the Intel MBs which seem to carry over more of the legacy stuff than the AMD ones. Even the Z170 has it. If you dig around their site look for the "Specifications" and under "Connector" will be listed 1 x COM Port Header
  18. Anyone here successful using USB Webcams and using Webcam software in Windows 9X / ME? Intel USB 2.0 and NUSB drivers don't appear to have a proper driver to add USB Webcams.
  19. NUSB test Rear and Internal Intel USB 3.0 header ports - does not work with anything. Disabled USB 3.0 controller via BIOS to avoid pop up detection in the Device Manager. 2 Dead Intel USB 2.0 ports - works for USB Keyboard, but not USB Mouse. - Was due to an IRQ conflict but can be reactivated. It might be worth sacrificing the two ports for a free IRQ. 6 Total USB 2.0 ports are available and working: 2 Rear Intel USB 2.0 ports - works with NUSB - works with USB mouse and USB keyboard. USB hard drive readable. 4 Internal Intel USB 2.0 header ports with NUSB - works with USB mouse and USB keyboard. USB hard drive readable. Restart in MS-DOS mode issues: Could be up to a 30 second delay before the Command Prompt appears. Loss of PS/2 Keyboard functionality if plugged into a USB Port. Recommend keeping the PS/2 Keyboard plugged into the PS/2 Port in all situations.
  20. I haven't found any PS/2 splitter cable that worked to provide both PS/2 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse working. If you have only one PS/2 Port (Combo). Use it for the PS/2 Keyboard. Some of the modern motherboards still have a serial Com port header if you must use a serial mouse during the setup by getting a one of those brackets and use it temporarily or install it permanently. The 98SE install can be completed with the PS/2 Keyboard all the way to the end without the need of a mouse. You can later swap the PS/2 Keyboard with USB mouse > PS/2 adapter and hook the USB keyboard to the onboard USB 2 ports (no drivers necessary).
