  1. If it's x86 and not ARM, it will work, including popular Asus EEE PC's and other netbooks with x86 Intel Atoms. 98SE does not care about anything other than x86 architecture. (And so does MS-DOS which which is a part of 98SE)
  2. RLoew's USB Mass Storage Driver is simpler, and doesn't modify any system files. Also no unnecessary (IMO) HOTPLUG.EXE. And it's language independent. GeForce 7950GT 256MB AGP (or PCI-E) with the unofficial 82.69 drivers is the best GPU for 98SE. 1GB RAM is the maximum for 98SE without paid patches from RLoew. SATA Patch from RLoew is a must for proper SATA speeds/compatibility. CPU doesn't matter, any x86-64 CPU works with 98SE, go for the best. MoBo - look for a Socket 775 one with Award BIOS, no AMI, it causes problems.
  3. MaxPhysPage=20000 is all you need for get rid of this message, no need to destroy the OS.
  4. Do you have a USB flashdrive? Can you check if MoBo support USB booting? You could run the installation from USB, rather than from CD.
  5. Try using older versions of the driver/utility.
  6. I have some problems like: (can only think of these at the moment) 1. Shutdown to MS-DOS from Shutdown menu not working. 2. DX-Ball has no text at all Both are fixed when using 7x.xx drivers.
  7. I wonder if the 7xxx series would work on 77.72 drivers. I generally have some problems with using 8x.xx drivers with my 6600GT AGP 128MB card, but maybe you'll be luckier! It all depends on the card itself.
  8. MSI Bioses are crap, my nForce 550 MoBo was a MSI one, barebones as it gets, there wasn't even a switch to turn SATA to legacy! I guess this applies also to 98SE compatible MSI MoBo's.
  9. Mostly to Nomen: Looking at how I can run 98SE on my Lenovo IdeaPad Z510 with a i3-4000M CPU, and on a nForce 550, it all comes down to these things: 1. Chipset drivers are useless if they do not have any registry entires, or dedicated .sys files (like GART). You mostly won't need them! 2. I was able to fully shutdown/restart with no problems on Z510, and on a nForce 550. "setup /p i" is your friend. 3. USB is handled fully by NUSB, no matter how new the computer is. No need for special USB drivers from manufacturer. 4. VBEMP is your friend when no GPU drivers are available. You can even run UT99 (and DX-Ball ) with VBEMP, I did that! I didn't need any bridge drivers, it just worked with my PCI-E GPU's (Radeon HD5670 and GT 220) 5. Try to use the Win2K or NDIS2 driver for onboard Ethernet if possible, they might work. (if no Win98 drivers available of course) 6. Remove ESDI_506.pdr to use the 16-bit file transfer mode in not-safe mode. This is if you don't want to buy the SATA patch, and are willing to have slow file transfers, and overall slower experience. 7. Yellow marks are useless, just ignore them! (or disable as many onboard devices in the BIOS to get rid of some of them) 8. All(?) ASRock MoBo's of this era, uses an AMI BIOS, which is not great. I have an ASRock K8Upgrade-NF3 MoBo in my 98SE setup, and I'm not fully satisfied by it. I wish I've picked up something different. I'm now growing more dislike towards ASRock, though I liked them just like you.
  10. While trying to answer Nomen's question, I've accidentally found this site: http://www.simplynet.pl/cennik/2/594.htm Might be useful, or not.
  11. A reputable 400W/450W PSU is enough for a maxed out system on this board, depending on the GPU you want to use. No need for a 600W one.
  12. Some games do infact run too fast when run on a fast CPU. But there's no rule which ones, it depends how they were programmed. Is there a way to limit CPU frequency/limit FPS of a game under 98SE?
  13. What? VMware fully supports drag and drop in 98SE. I've used it personally. Just install the VMware Tools. VMware and VPC 2007 SP1 are the only reasonable virtualization software for guest 98SE.
  14. Wrong, i915 has 98SE/ME drivers. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i915P-SATA2/ This is the motherboard you might consider. Just have a USB2.0 addon-card to use with it (not a simple bracket), since the onboard USB is limited to 1.1 on 9x.
  15. One of the best motherboards I've looked online is this one: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i915P-SATA2/ Win98SE will benefit from PCI-E/SATA2/DDR2 memory support. Though this MoBo requires an additional USB 2.0 card, since manual states on this chipset, the inbox USB 2.0 don't work on 98SE :/ There is also this one, but only AGP/DDR1/SATA1, though you can put a Q6600 on it because why not? Win98SE mostly will benefit from increased L2 Cache, though 2MB is enough. I have 256KB in my 98SE rig, and it already feels snappy. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G%20R3.0/ You can put up to 3GB of RAM, with the commercial RAM patch. GPU choice is either GeForce 6800 series, or Radeon X850 series. And before anyone tells me that GeForce 7000 series (don't know which exactly) can also work, tell me if there's an actual difference between 6800 and 7000's cards in 3D performance, like Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005), or GTA: SA, or The Sims 2. I don't really care about synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark anymore. The rest is mostly integrated in motherboard.
  16. Does this monitor actually have "drivers" available for it? (probably won't do anything, but worth mentioning) Also, Radeon + 98SE always meant trouble.
  17. What's the DEV and VID of that AC'97 Audio? You can see it by using HWINFO.EXE /UI in Run box, and settings it up to see devices with errors. To install NDIS2 drivers, just use the Add New Hardware wizard, after it scans, just use the Have Disk thingy. I tried them on my Lenovo Z510 laptop, but they failed.
  18. I actually have a question, what does: do in USBSTOR.inf? On other USB Mass Storage drivers for 98SE, this registry key is missing. The flashdrives work correctly with and without this registry, so why it is there?
  19. Do you run FDISK from flash drive? Is the laptop's hard drive detected as the second hard drive (the first being USB flashdrive), or there is only one drive listed? I'm curious about this since I use FDISK to install 98SE from a USB flashdrive. Is the partition you try to install set to active?
  20. Boot hang up when USB flash drive is plugged is in 98SE as well. There are no drivers for video, use VBEMP. Audio is HD Audio, there are no drivers, you would have to buy a USB Audio Card. Ethernet is either Intel or Broadcom, try using DOS NDIS2 drivers corresponding to what Ethernet chip you have.
  21. What is your harddrive model and size? Does FDISK detects the harddrive?
  22. Does safe mode work? Install with "setup /p i", limit the RAM if more than 1152MB, do you install on IDE or SATA? If SATA, set it to Compatible if possible. Try also deleting ESDI_506.pdr from Windows/System/Iosubsys from pure DOS. I've succesfully ran Win98SE on a nForce 550 motherboard, on a SATA drive with these tips.
  23. Phew! I've finally made it work! I basically did an clean install without 98lite, and just installing all the needed drivers/programs/addons. I made it work even with the latest version! Now I'll have to make it work with 98lite somehow...
  24. I've took a look at the 249973usa8.exe. Inside, there are two more exe's of interest: ver153.exe and ver1200.exe Inside them are normal standard inf and files like in any other update exe. The files that they update are riched32.dll, riched20.dll (renamed: riched20.153 or riched20.120), and usp10.dll. Looks like these are two different versions of the same three files...why? I don't know. I guess one is for FE and other for SE? It's not clear at all. There's not hint as to what version to install.
  25. I'm not interested in running older Flash version than 9, I want at least 10 or 11. Though I've tried your YouTube spoof, it does work, but I can't select anything better than 240p, and the player stays at previous video, when I click a link to another one. There's no resize to big window mode. I'm running Windows 98 SE.
