Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
pangoomis replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I use XMPlay: http://www.un4seen.com/ It's still supported and developed, can play FLAC with the free plugin on the site, it works without KernelEx. \ I highly recommend it! i use it even on my main Win7 PC. Although it won't work if you change/mess up the msvcrt.dll file. -
Would be nice if you could provide the exact EXE file. Try using Windows ME's bootdisk for OFORMAT.COM. Setver never helped in anything for me A nice question to add while on this topic, is why IO.SYS forces loading SETVER.EXE while starting 9x? What is it used for?

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
pangoomis replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I bought the AHCI driver, however, it doesn't really work. I didn't have the time recently to troubleshoot it further with rloew on email, everyone will know if it finally works And it's Kaby Lake, not Skylake, the chipset in motherboard is Skylake (H110), the CPU is a Kaby Lake Pentium G4560. -
Not all (un)official patches are available for Polish version of ME currently. I could transplant ME files myself, but what about newer files than on the CD? Wayback Machine can only help so much. People focused on the English version (which I understand), so that's why I'm slightly irritated about that. Besides, totally off-topic, I do not really like MDGx's writing style about anything, extremely convoluted! As for the main topic, in the span of just three(!) years, M$ released 5 OS's! (98FE, 98SE, 2000, ME, XP) No wonder one of them could have failed, they were busy back in the day, there was only so much time for quality assurance, not to mention consulting with the PC component manufacturers and suppliers at the same time, it was crazy, I'd imagine.

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
pangoomis replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
That's an untranslated string from the original Japanese version, saying that using this program may ban you while playing online multiplayer games. Other things are translated to English. There is a version where this string is translated, but it doesn't work well on 98SE. It's a really nice utility for those games that work under 98SE that do not have windowed mode built-in. -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Nice app you've found, @jumper! I can't find a way to sort processes by clicking on the columns, but one thing I've noticed, that it shows files used by a process in real time, this is cool especially in games like in this example: https://imgur.com/a/EaHzc I think Process Explorer/AIDA64 can't do that. -
98SE2ME would be great, if it supported other languages of 98SE, not just English.

AIDA64 shows memory usage, CPU usage and programs in memory. For a true task manager, use Process Explorer 11.11 (latest for 9x) As for VCache settings, try http://www.thpc.info/dload/swp160up.zip or http://www.thpc.info/dload/cacheman.zip -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

The never versions of CPU-Z for Win98 do include the VXD driver. It's extracted from the "cpuz.exe" as a hidden file called "cpuz.vxd" when the program starts, and is deleted after the program is closed normally. More interesting thing is that, the VXD driver in both 1.57, and the newest 1.78.1 versions are identical! The 1.78.1 version only works for me on my ThinkPad T40. It has failed on all previous machines I've tested. (K8Upgrade-NF3 s754 rig, ASUS X75VB, Lenovo IdeaPad Z510, my main PC). I think 1.57 did work on all of them, but obviously, it didn't know what those newer processors were on the newer machines. Sadly, on the 1.78.1 version, the core clock is missing. I'll stick to the good old AIDA64 which is still actively supported for 98SE without KernelEx (minus the installer, use the portable ZIP version). -
Disable ACPI in registry, it should be enough. I would better reinstall 98SE from scratch, setting the system up is half the fun after all Did you have compatibility mode issues before you've enabled ACPI?

(failed) Ryzen and Fall of the Roman Empire... sort of...
pangoomis replied to ragnargd's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I do not use Optical Drives, so that's not important for me. I am truly interested, considering the testing I've done with you on e-mail. -
Use HIMEMX, it can make system more stable above 512MB. Never install 98SE using ACPI. There's a reason IBM officially(!) says to install 98SE on my ThinkPad T40 in APM mode and not ACPI. Do you have DMA enabled? Do drivers work in 32bit protected mode (no errors in the last tab in System properties about compatibility mode?) Can you try different graphic drivers? I use Omega Drivers too, but you can try official T40 ones: https://www.techspot.com/drivers/downloadnow/3415/?evp=248e71de1f89703e55b98a0dba7e16bc&file=1 Try removing modules from laptop one by one (wifi card, modem, bluetooth, what can you) and see what removal makes system snappier. Try changing every BIOS option you can, especially disabling all modules you can (serial, parallel, infrared, wifi, ethernet, among others).

I wish I could test it. -
3C2000-T PCI Gigabit NIC Win98 driver, exist or not?
pangoomis replied to ruthan's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well, that's weird, the INF file you posted, should have worked. Try these drivers: 3Com940.zip These DO have the same exact hardware ID as you've posted. Can you try WinME? Do you install via Add New Hardware, or Device Manager? You should install via Device Manager pointing to a Ethernet Controller with a yellow question mark. If nothing works still, I can try editing the INF to remove any useless information, however this should not be necessary, as 98SE ignores the useless data in INF file regardless. -

Well, we need the Hardware ID of your card that is installed in the system. -
@Drugwash - forgot about the IE6 bug? http://oldcomputer.info/log/index.php?id=20161224041259-windows-98---fixing-file-operation-delays I prefer IE 5.5 SP2, RP9 works fine with it.

That's a workaround, not a solution, if I didn't want to use WMP9, I would not use it And besides, is there a Toothy skin for GOM Player? EDIT: Besides, with RP9 this problem has been fixed more or less. I still wonder why certain WMP9 skins eat more resources.
-
I guess this problem will eventually lead to the problem of: should we focus on 98SE+ compatibility with more features, or keep 95 compatibility with some limitations, or perhaps make two versions, or maybe I'm just dumb thinking,

This is a Win32 application, It can't work under Win3.11, Win32s is the only (rather poor) hope.

On my ThinkPad T40 98SE machine (which is beautiful, by the way), whenever I open WMP9 (even without any file to play), the System/GDI resources drop significantly. The worst part is when you try to choose/select a skin, the resources drop to below 20%. I've tried 98MP10, but it only got slightly worse, now it drops to 0%. Any tips for that? No other app does that. I want to enjoy my Toothy skin without any problems. EDIT: Installing KernelEx and Revolutions Pack 9 did help somewhat, but depending on the skin, it can drop to 70% (Toothy) or to 35% (Compact/WMP11 skin). Maybe obtaining rpXbeta1.zip would help, I can't find it anywhere. Is it even necessary when you have the latest version of Revolutions Pack? EDIT2: I've been reading about the whole GDI thing in 98SE, the best bet is to simply install latest Revolutions Pack and be done with it? And just to live with 70% as there is no better option? Anything changed since Tihiy left 98SE scene?

File is linked to missing export WMVCore.dll:WMCreateReader [Solved]
pangoomis replied to JaKSLaP's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Which WMP version you've installed? As jumper said, you probably need to install the latest version, which is WMP9, download it right here: (M$ still hasn't removed it!) http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/b/c/1bc0b1a3-c839-4b36-8f3c-19847ba09299/MPSetup.exe -
My new ThinkPad T40 98SE laptop is eagerly waiting for a new browser, good luck to you, rn10950! I'm tired of Opera too!

For MX440, I recommend the 45.23 driver. It should work fine.

KeyX sounds fine, there is too much software starting with Win at the beginning The program looks like a good foundation for a much more advanced hotkey utility, like replacing the existing ones/making new ones by user/making screenshots on the fly/other hooks to make hotkeys off like shutdown/register DLL with a hotkey? I'm just giving ideas, I don't know what you want to do with this software in the future Also, totally offtopic: Can you re-upload the Odyssey Client installer by you? The original link has expired.
