  1. Stretching image in a image editor is a workaround, not a fix. I tried creating folders with the same name, but Win95 after a reboot then renamed the folders to System.da1 and User.da1, and created .da0 all over again, how lovely Autoruns (oldest version I could find) wouldn't work. However, I do have a view of the whole registry (via regedit export), and there's nothing about backup anywhere. WallpaperStyle was one of the first things I've tried, it doesn't work. I've tried running msconfig.exe from 98SE, but didn't work.
  2. 1. How to prevent creating the registry backup at startup? (system.da0 and user.da0) 2. How to stretch the wallpaper without using Plus 95? I've tried common tricks, but nothing worked...
  3. Some of us don't earn much...nor have good exchange rates... Maybe make it free in the next 5 years?
  4. Just like XP is still to this day...the King is dead, long live the King!
  5. Whoever installs extra drivers for their printers (that is, anything else than the *.inf) is making their computer miserable. The only time you might want such thing, is to check the toner/ink level...not much else... I have a HP Deskjet F2290, that has builtin drivers in Win7, and a Brother HL-1112E, which I only install the *.inf file, works flawlessly. So in you case, try to find the folder with the *.inf file, and install it manually via Device Manager.
  6. I confirm that this wonderful piece of software can playback 1080p .mp4 with AVC & AAC audio (with SOUND!) on my new and shiny Lenovo IdeaPad Z510 all from pure DOS, running from my pendrive!
  7. Do you have TCP/IP installed? (note it only works in Windows for Workgroups 3.11) If not, grab it here: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/clients/wfw/TCP32B.EXE
  8. I think TweakUI simply copies the values from your user's registry to HKEY_USERS/.Default, but I MIGHT be wrong, so you know
  9. You need proper color palettes, this site might help you: http://users.telenet.be/Robvdb/how_to_change_bootscreen_XP.htm
  10. Shouldn't .DOS files should work with no problems, seeing as they are present in NET7.CAB setup cabinet?
  11. Umm...doesn't Tweak UI 2.10 under this menu does that same thing?
  12. ACPI causes some problems based on my experience, mostly on newer computer never made to run Win98SE at all, it causes the setup to crash at the PnP detection section, when installing it on a pendrive. (not from, but on, that's a huge difference) The system on APM operates/shuts down/boots up just as well as with the ACPI.
  13. No, absolutely no. Look at this mobo for example: http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/p4i65g/ (my personal favorite for 98SE IMO) In it's manual, which you can read here: ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/P4i65G.pdf on page 23 it says: Hyper Threading Technology To enable this feature, it requires a computer system with an Intel Pentium®4 processor that supports Hyper-Threading technology and an operating system that includes optimization for this technology, such as Microsoft®Windows®XP. So, you better take care of the L2 cache, and the MHz's, instead of HT. They'll help much better.
  14. About the drivers: - Onboard Audio is impossible, as it's HD Audio. - LAN - try the NDIS2 driver here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false - GPU - VBEMP - http://www.navozhdeniye.narod.ru/vbe9x.htm - universal GPU driver for all GPU's that has only basic support, however brakes DOS window sessions, it's up to you if you want 32 bit colors, or DOS windows.
  15. Altering ESDI isn't really a full solution, more like a workaround. Now you have slow 16bit realtime drivers (try copying big files) You can check that by going into the "Performance" tab in the System properties, you should see errors about MS-DOS compatibility, which is a bunch of lies, you just don't have ESDI running. I don't know why you need that stuff though, as Win98 should just work out of the box with the setup you told. Maybe it's just the FE that causes trouble? I never used FE in my life, only SE.
  16. I don't know if this will help, but maybe install the Win98 without ACPI? Use "setup /p i" for that. And look in your BIOS for SATA compatibility stuff, try switching stuff there. And you tried deleting ESDI? Maybe reverting to 16-bit realtime drivers (which are used in SAfe Mode) will help, though this fix is mainly for SATA drives ;/
  17. Do you have 98 installed on a SATA drive? Try to remove/change name of ESDI_506.pdr in Windows/System/Iosubsys.
  18. I think this is impossible. First, I tried without 98lite, using the clean install - same errors. Then, I tried jumper's suggestion, the Device Manager showed an yellow exclamation mark, as if the driver wasn't loaded at all, so the 2008 *.sys file does NOT work. The 2014 one, and the NDIS driver DOES, but with the ASD error as explained in my previous post.
  19. Sadly, it still doesn't work It hangs on the boot screen the restart after the driver installs. If i reboot again, I got the same error in ASD.EXE (the windows in the middle) as with the NDIS driver before. I've used the jumper's inf, as well as the one I shortened myself earlier, still the same thing. This is really strange, as everything seems to be fine, but things like WINIPCFG.EXE gives an error the the IP configuration is not ready. Obviously no sign of connection whatsoever. Maybe the 98lite I'm using is the culprit? Maybe use the .SYS file from the 2008 version? Maybe the fact that I'm running this 98SE from my SanDisk Cruiser Blade 16GB pendrive. If installing to my real HDD would help? (I really don't want to screw with it, only as a last resort) Maybe it's because I've installed it with the /p i switch (to force APM instead of ACPI) to install it on a pendrive? Any log files worth sharing?
  20. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/154725-minf-minimize-an-inf-file/ actually a jumper's program, how nifty. Even without doing anything to the INF, it dropped from 2kb to about 655kb. WIth the stuff I've removed, I narrowed it down to about 25kb. Will test it when I have time.
  21. Well...the file that is supossedly used by 98 section the inf is the Rtenic.sys. But the same file is mentioned in the 2000 section as well. XP uses different Rtenicxp.sys. I'll try your suggestions.
  22. I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z510 laptop with an Intel i3-4000M, and 8GB of RAM. It has a Realtek 8106E Fast Ethernet chip, and one of its compatible Hardware ID is this: PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&REV_07 The drivers for this are here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=7&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false This ID is present in the Win 2000/XP driver inside the .inf. But, this very .inf is very similar to the Win98SE .inf, (it has all the stuff from the .inf from the Win98SE driver: strings, hardware ids, file destinations, driver options, etc.) but it's not recognized by Win98SE. Here's the Win 2000/XP to look at: http://wklej.org/id/1498595/ In the .inf for the Win98SE driver, there's no ID for my chip, but it's recognized by Win98SE. There's the Win98SE inf: http://wklej.org/id/1498598/ So anyone can help me to get the Win2000/XP .inf to get recognized? And no, the NDIS driver didn't work as an alternative, it is automatically disabled in the ASD.EXE, it says there's a conflict between the NDIS driver and the TCP/IP protocol.
  23. I disagree, 98 works fine with 1GB of RAM. Even on my 2013 Core i3 laptop If it doesn't work for some reason (GPU drivers?), he simply takes out the RAM modules, and he's fine.
  24. You can also delete the ESDI_506.PDR file in Windows/System/IOSUBSYS directory in Command Prompt in F8 menu after you install Windows. Either way, you'll revert back to 16bit realtime drivers (normally used in Safe Mode) which are slow. OR, switch the SATA mode to RAID, then you'll not need to do anything! It will not use the ESDI_506.pdr, and you'll simply have a unknown RAID controller in the Device Manager, and no IDE stuff. Still realtime drivers
  25. Download the drivers from the ASRock site, and burn them to a CD. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G/?cat=Download&os=98
