  1. Hello, thanks to both of you. Sdfox7, i'm also sorry for the delay in replying. I cannot download the full defs, because in this days i have only a connection too slow for a big download like this. But i just started the download four days ago, and the browswer shows me a total size of 119.074.336 bytes. Now, trying again, it's still unchanged. Yes, you are right. The last reference (that i founded) talked about april 2013. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/162132-good-firewallantivirus-for-win98/#comment-1032019 Three extra years have been a good gift! Perhaps this could be the right time... except new surprises like for the 200 MB trouble
  2. I noticed that the last VPS on my installation is the following: 160331-2. A more recent version seems not avalaible. Has anyone tried an update of the own definitions after this date on a pc with different OS? I cannot establish if it's about an issue and this depends from windows 98 or the support was dropped for all and the 160331-2 was the last definitive definition for Avast 4.8
  3. Well, i searched for old updates (POST UR1) in italian language and i have founded these addresses: All these are avalaible on Wayback Machine. You need only copy and paste the relative address on web.archive.orgI hope this will be useful to someone in the future. A little note... From KB94XXXX i have founded only last five in my list. The strange thing is that all these five are still avalaible from Microsoft (!) and their have been saved by Wayback Machine only 1 time on marzo 10, 2016, i.e. today! What do you think?
  4. Have you ever applied this? Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/239887 Also, take a look here if you have never done Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/238096
  5. The umpteenth image viewer! For the joy of ZortMcGort11 http://suprvillain.deviantart.com/art/CIV-the-Common-Image-Viewer-102359204 CiV - Common Image Viewer, small, simple and nice look. I like to mention it because officially is built for xp, but runs fine also on Windows 98 without kernelex
  6. Hi all. These should be the original links from microsoft for italian SP4: 1) download page: www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/details.aspx?id=4127 2) direct link: download.microsoft.com/download/4/3/9/4399958A-CAE3-48CF-9FC3-2A36DAAB3A5E/w2ksp4_it.exe They are already present into Internet Archive
  7. Sorry, i don't understand. Where are you copying this? I think submix8c is right. In KB892211 i found this: Applies to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86) Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86) Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Microsoft Windows XP Professional Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  8. Perhaps i can suggest you this simple "hardware" solution: set the power button of your pc as a standby button. These are the steps: press right-click on your desktop, then properties -> screen saver -> power -> advanced. Therefore select Standby in "When i press the power button on my computer".
  9. For those interested, Avast update certainly works again! Last december i unistalled Avast, therefore i could not try before today. Now, i reinstalled it and, with the last definitions, proceeded a manual update without problems. Edit: add a screenshot Edit 2: for the record, also the auto-update is ok, as for patclash
  10. This is interesting! I just noticed that the actual VPS is again plenty under the critical (and so bloated) threshold of 200 MB. Now is 105,1 MB!!! https://www.avast.com/download-thank-you.php?product=VPS4&locale=en-ww
  11. I like to do a mention for the old (1992) floppy disk utility HD-Copy by Oliver Fromme. It was released as cardware. http://www.asiawide.or.jp/HD_COPY.htm Only 45,8 KB for a highly customizable and rich set of features. Among these are the expected commons functions: format (various standard and no-standard formats), verify, boot sector rewrite, image management and bla bla bla... But also allows you to shield floppies with a password, and above all has (my opinion) a great feature, named FAT selection, that enable the possibility to create a floppy image copying, instead of the whole disk, only the tracks containing data. Maybe, the only "contraindication" is that protected floppy and image so created can be handled by HD-Copy only, otherwise are unusable.
  12. I believe that Schwups ideas are right. Considering that Flash 9 works, it sounds me like a Kernelex issue. Which Kernelex version are you using? Have you already verified the registry key of Kernelex related to NPSWF32.dll?
  13. Nice service! Thank you. Two similar way (but the images are maintened): http://www.mowser.com http://google.com/gwt/n (google mobilizer) EDIT... A "demerit" note for google mobilizer! :-/ I am just realized that doesn't more work with https pages.
  14. Hello Schwups, try this method. Open the Avast interface and uncheck "enable avast self-defense module" in program settings -> troubleshooting. Therefore, in the Avast5 setup folder, search the file vps_32-11xx.vpx (about 260MB), rename or put it into the recycle bin, then launch the update. Please, let me know your results.
  15. Just an (maybe) illogical idea. I am wondering if it works also in NT or 2000 or XP with FAT32. I cannot try it.
  16. Two questions Have you tried to spoof the user agent? (mask as firefox) Are you able to work with Flash 9 or 8 plugin, therefore without kernelex?
  17. Not only, but also it seems a good puzzle, similar to Tower of Hanoihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Hanoi
  18. Hi Nomen. Have you tried opening the KB articles through Google cache? Even IE6 can do it. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:UJgyr6h-0PMJ:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/323207%2Bhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/323207&hl=it&gbv=1&prmd=ivns&strip=1&vwsrc=0
  19. I take the opportunity for a test with IE7 on xp sp3. IE7 no more works as well as for opera 8.5. At this point, i believe that the sha2 compatibility is no more sufficient to explain the blocks Ah, i also tried old firefox 2 (no tls 1.1 capablity) Well... it loads every page. For example https://www.howsmyssl.com/s/about.html that instead require tls 1.1 protocol! (TLS v1.1 128 bit ARC4 (2048 bit RSA/SHA)) Likewise Opera 9.02 works... but Opera 8.5 doesn't work: Secure connection: fatal error (70). Handshake failed because the server does not want to accept the enabled SSL/TLS protocol versions
  20. I installed opera 8.5 and 9.02 today for some tests. Opera 9.02 still works normally on https sites, but 8.5X branch does not work anymore. 8.5 supports already TLS 1.1 and in some cases it has already the right certificate. For example https://www.wikipedia.orguse now the Global sign root CA (TLS v1.0 128 bit AES (2048 bit DHE_RSA/SHA)). Opera 8.5 supports it natively, but every attempt fails now (Unable to complete secure transaction - fatal error 554). I don't understand it. p.s. Sorry, i forgot... Both (8.5 and 9) seem to have the same certificates included.
  21. Hi. If I may put my simple two cents in, i successfully tested KernelEx on a Pentium III.
  22. Of course it load. My experience was referring to https sites. In fact, Google works properly only with the http version. I am wondering if exists a simple solution for remedy the sha2 issue For example, this topic is interesting, but it doesn't help much to find a solution with our Windows 9x: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/162148-ssl-sha-2-with-ie6sp1/
  23. I can open Google (http version) with IE6 and javascript disabled. But this workaround doesn't work with different sites. Anyway, also Internet explorer 5.5 fail for other sites.
  24. I suggest you ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2.0 SE. Small but already quite complete. http://web.archive.org/web/20010411054644/http://home2.photoisland.com/photosharing/pstudiotrial.html
  25. What detects the bios? Have you attempt to solve the issue rebuilding the current hardware profile? Maybe you can solve in this way (i don't guarantee anything, it's only what I would try) You need: Windows 98 CD Motherboard driver Any other drivers (modem, pci devices...) Then, right-click on my computer -> properties -> device manager - open any items and delete all, one by one - reboot your pc - insert the cd driver when required.
