Shows Russians are smarter than Americans!

I've heard of linix for years but know nothing of it. I recently came across this OS online: http://zorin-os.com/ How well does this perform? Is it compatible with a wide variety of hardware (like my dell 330)? Also, what security programs are available for it (firewall, antivirus etc). While I'm perfectly happy with my win2k machine, I was thinking of experimenting with a new OS for my other xp machine. Just thought I'd ask if any of you guys have any experience with this?

Well said, it reminds me of an interview I saw a while back of some of the actors in the Terminator series, one of them was an older gentlemen (I believe he was the one who played a police shrink) who mentioned he didn't have any internet connection at all and always tried to use cash or checks when buying things or paying bills because he was so spooked by the idea of what intrusive technology could do. I used to have DSL back in the old apartment I lived in years ago and have enjoyed a couple of bouts of cable internet where I live now the last few years, the rest of the time it's been dialup due to the fact that any highspeed option in my area is just plain expensive. I'm finally getting some stuff paid off soon, so I had been planning to go back to cable-but recently the more information I see here and the more I think about it-I have to ask myself, do I REALLY need to have the extra speed just to watch youtube in my spare time and play around with a bunch of stuff I don't need to waste time with. Back in the old days, when you wanted a PC game-you could just buy the disk, install it and you were ready to go-you didn't need an internet connection to do so, if it needed a patch, you could look it up yourself. Now most of the stuff out there is wired into Steam-which requires a high speed connection (not to sound too paranoid, but it makes you wonder if Steam couldn't be used to get into your system as well). Anyways, these kind of discussions make me reconsider how and why I use the internet in the first place and the fact that there is so much snooping out there nowadays makes me want to take a minimalist approach, e-mail, a few news/history/theological websites that I know from years of experience that aren't malware havens. As silly as it sounds, there are times I wish we could go back to the pre-internet days-but MSFN at least is always worth checking out. B) Edit: I just had another thought-a wise person once said-don't post anything online you wouldn't want to see on the first page of the New York Times!

That's the course of action I'm taking, I plan on sticking with XP/2000 for now. BTW, some of you who are programming experts might consider assisting tomaz win2000 sp 5.2 project http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156521-unofficial-sp-52-for-microsoft-windows-2000/page-32 Windows 2000 is activation free and if it can be remixed to allow use of modern browsers and security tools, it would give us a viable option to resist win10.

Unofficial SP 5.2 for Microsoft Windows 2000 (WIP)
OldSchool38 replied to tomasz86's topic in Hotstream
I was wondering, as you update UURollup-is there anyway to fix the issue where comodo firewall version 2.4.18.184 isn't disabled when you install it. That's a problem I've had in the past, and while other firewalls like Outpost 2009 seem to work fine-testing websites I've used to check it out seem to indicate Comodo the more secure of the two. -
I've used LibreOffice 3.6 for the past few years on and off again for word processing type activities and have had no trouble with it at all. As for being a 'Microsoft enabler', I find that rather funny since I'm typing this on the desktop I have that has vanilla Win2k sp4 on it. LibreOffice looks a lot better than what little I've seen of Win8/10 metro so far.

If you need an office program, you might try Libre Office 3.6, it works on Win2k, XP and 7 from my experience. B)

Spyware Blaster issue with SeaMonkey browser
OldSchool38 replied to OldSchool38's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Just wanted to let you guys know what's happened, I tried fiddling around with the settings and nothing seemed to work-so I just made sure to run Spyware Blaster before I started using my browser to fix the issue before going surfing. However after recently installing the new 5.2 version of Spyware Blaster, it seems the problem has been fixed! -
Impossible Rocket Drive Works - Could Get to Moon in Four Hours
OldSchool38 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
If this thing works it would be a great boost for space flight, as for speed issues-maybe they could go incrementally faster than current rockets to keep the thing controllable, at least until the technology improves. Now all we need is some shielding for radiation issues and a little artificial gravity! -
Love it! I cant stop laughing! Btw, forgive my ignorance, but is Microsoft trying to slip in Win 10 to Vista users as well-or is it just Win 7/8 only?
-
I've always preferred Seamonkey myself, that along with AdBlock + NoScript.
-
I tried again, this time on my old laptop that has wi-fi instead of my desktop that's stuck on 56k, it's working now-thanks!

Hi blackwingcat, I was trying to download your latest extended kernel and one of the nvidia drivers from your site, but I appear to be unable to, all I get are errors when I try-is there an alternate download location for those files?

After some dabbling with win 7, I'm using XP sp3 right now as my main system OS. I don't plan to mess with the POS updates after doing some prior experimentation and gettng strange responses from avast, as long as I can get a current firewall/antivirus program to work on my system, I don't feel poorly defended. I don't bother with any version of internet explorer, just SeaMonkey with adblock/no script.

Best antivirus/firewall for windows XP sp 3?
OldSchool38 replied to OldSchool38's topic in Windows XP
Thanks for the info, btw I just found out today that Comodo 3.14.130099.587 will also work on Windows 2003 server standard Sp2! I was reinstalling it on another computer of mine (a dell 330) and it works great! -
I currently have win xp installed on my main computer at the moment with the usual setup, however I noticed on a program I've recently started using called spywareblaster says that '234 items have protection disabled' on my SeaMonkey browser (2.33.1 version). I enable all protection, but it's not long before I get the same error again-what is going on? I recently reinstalled and have plenty of security (comodo firewall, avast, malwarebytes etc) I've scanned with all the different programs and my system is clean.

I've returned to XP recently to avoid any 'surprises' a Win 7 update might have in store-but if I had power over Microsoft, I would get rid of online activation! I don't like being forced to ask their permission to use a legit copy of their OS that I paid good money for!

Best antivirus/firewall for windows XP sp 3?
OldSchool38 replied to OldSchool38's topic in Windows XP
Just tried the version of Comodo suggested-great stuff! Checked it out on the 'Shields Up' website and it appears to offer the same level of protection that the newest version does at 1/4 the size! Thanks! -
I avoided Vista/Win 8 in the past, but I've been reading about Win 10 to see if Microsoft had changed it's ways-it obviously hasn't! Now I'm considering going back to Win XP for my main system now!

I have a couple of desktop towers right now (a homebuilt with 7 and an old dell with win2k). However I'm working on fixing another old dell tower I was planning to put win XP sp3 on and I was wondering, I run the current version of avast on my win 7 system and avast version 7 on the 2000 tower, both of which work great-before I go installing the latest avast version on XP-is there a specific version that works best for the XP OS? Also the last version of Comodo firewall that works for 2000 always seemed to work fine for me (I tried outpost firewall 2009-but the 'Sheilds up' site kept telling me it was leaving ports open while the old Comodo firewall didn't), the current version of Comodo firewall I have on my windows 7 system is a 200 meg monster. Is all that really necessary or is it just bloatware? In other words does the old version of Comodo work just fine for regular web surfing, e-mail etc? I want good protection, but don't see the need for unecessary bloat.

Windows 2003 performance and security?
OldSchool38 replied to OldSchool38's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Well, it's been a busy last couple of days-I had ordered a new dell reinstallation disk from ebay with win 2003 on it, thought I had a great deal-but it didn't come with an activation key! However I got the chance to observe 2003 on another computer and noticed a few things. 1. It's FAST!-I LOVE the speed! 2. Many security programs like spybot, malware bytes 1.75, and clamwin will work-but some firewalls like Outpost pro wont. 3. The lastest version of Foxit PDF acts funny (also on XP sp3) but Sumatra PDF is good. -
Windows 2003 performance and security?
OldSchool38 replied to OldSchool38's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Thanks guys, as for using google to get answers there's three issues. 1. I'm on dialup so it takes a while to search for info. 2. If you go to 10 different sites-well you tend to get 10 different answers. 3. Running around looking up stuff on a bunch of new sites you aren't familiar with increases your chances of running into some nasty virus/malaware. So instead I ask on MSFN, where I know the guys here know what they're talking about! Thanks for the information, I just wanted to make sure I understood what 2003 was capable of before I got it and went through a big effort to install.
