  1. Sorry. If you want to use NVDIA Control Panel , You must copy manually tools and execute regsrv32 dlls. The beta installer has not supported the tools installation yet. Is there a tutorial out there on how to do that?
  2. You mean this?: "9. When you run the latest version of Firefox on Win2k, you MUST disable "Hardware Acceleration" in Tools > Options > Advanced > General. If you don't do this, you will likely see strange graphical glitches on the screen that will cause the browser to not work correctly. This is recommended prior to installing Firefox 13+ on Win2k." Is that in the display options in control panel? If I shut that down will it affect video quality on vids I play in VLC?
  3. On my security thread here: My link I noted that when I got avast finally figured out, I discovered ClamWin was attacking a number of files that had been modified, also I discovered while I could install the latest version of Firefox-for some reason it would later show a black screen when I tried to use it again and I had to switch back to qupzilla, I love the 5.2 concept but I decided to wait until it's finished and the bugs ironed out, since my motherboard (Biostar with LGA 775 processor) has win2k compatible drivers and there's still great utilities around that you can use for win2k, I've got everything I need for now. B)
  4. I'm not spooked about the Extended Kernel-it's actually quite good and I love the increased functionality, however as you saw on my security thread-I kept having problems with antivirus programs attacking various modified files, I'd set one to be excluded only for the other to be attacked. I look forward to 5.2 but I've decided to wait until it's done and properly tested and not keep grabbing the daily versions of UURollup to see what happens next. I have a cranky old xp machine I'm using as a backup and to do more sensitive stuff online, I'm planning to replace that in a few months with a homebuilt system and that's what I'm going to use my 620 for, after my experience with a 9500 card that became disabled due to a fan going out, I wanted a fanless card anyways. Once I get a 8400, I'll be able to do anything I want with my current setup. B)
  5. I recently pulled my 620 card out of my computer for now (plan to use it in a future Win 7 build). Since Deus Ex 1 or Quake 4 will likely be the most powerful game I'll be playing on my 2000 system, I was planning to get a cheap silent (fanless) card in 1gb. I had a 8400 a few years ago in 512 gb which worked quite well so I was thinking of ordering one of the 1gb ones they have on amazon, but I see some Geforce 210's are cheaper at times-which card do you think is the better performer, and does the 210 have drivers that will work with plain (unmodified) Win2k?
  6. Although I love the expanded abilities that the upcoming 5.2 unoffical pack promises to give, after varying glitches involving antivirus programs-I've settled on using 'plain vanilla' Win2k Sp 4 for now, while I find Qupzilla to be a good browser that is up to date and win2k compatible-I was wanting to know if some of the older versions of browsers like Opera and Mozilla 12 might still be useful for normal surfing, checking e-mail etc. While I know the up-to-date browers are supposedly more secure, after seeing how Outpost Firewall and an older version of Comodo Firewall seem to work better than the nearly 100 meg complete and current Zonealarm-I thought I might ask if those 'up to date' features are actually more bloatware than secure features?
  7. Okay, apparently avast wasn't the problem in that case-did a clamwin scan earlier and it quarantined several files which led to the previous results affecting my firewall, was able to go into the Clamwin folder and restore those items and set the filter to exclude them from future scans. It's taken a while but my goal of a usable, secure windows 2000 installation is finally in sight! Edit: Here is a list of files that ClamWin was having problems with for those who are thinking of using it with UURollup, you'll have to enter these on the 'filters' setting. C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\ndis.sys C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\srvany.exe C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\ndis.sys
  8. Here's a little update, I decided after reading some more information on avast to give it another shot-I was able to get the thing registered and updated via downloading an update file from a hi-speed internet source outside my home and installed it, at first everything seemed alright (I was able to set the .sfc dll to be excluded from scans) however avast apparently attacked other files on my system and when I restarted my computer (had to hit the reset switch due to the fact it wouldn't turn off) the Outpost firewall said some ".sys" file wouldn't load and it was disabled. I gritted my teeth and reinstalled everything, this time I did a custom install of avast where I only selected online protection (e-mail, browser, network, etc) and disabled everything else-I then installed Clamwin (which seems to behave more sensibly) for internal scans. So far so good-but I'm going to give it a week or so and see if there's any surprises, if this doesn't work-I'm throwing in the towel.
  9. I have one Win2k CD that is in good shape for the moment, but I'd like to make a backup just in case-I've tried to copy the thing before but the backup won't install-is there any way to fix that? Also, it's SP4 but for some reason I still have to do a registry hack in order to find and format the remaining space on my 320 Gig WD drive-can I fix that issue as well in the new copy?
  10. Think I've found a solution to my AVG issues here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080511134332AAEl2fO
  11. Just one question I had about the desktop, while the games are looking great-videos I watch with GOM or VLC seem to have a little less image quality than on XP, is there some utility out there I could try to tweak the settings a little since I don't have an Nvidia control panel to go to?
  12. Tried a new Win2k install on my main system today and have everything in place now, for some reason when I begin installing various utilities-Firefox compatibility gets broken but between Qupzilla and Maxthon I'm fine in the browser department for now. The only glitch I'm having at the moment is that AVG 9 once updated seems to be a little jumpy and keeps flagging various files like the uninstall files for 7zip and other utilities that I know for certain are clean, any helpful tips on how to tweak the thing so I don't have to keep hitting 'ignore' while at the same time not compromising on protection?
  13. Just tried installing Wolfenstien 2009 (not supposed to be used with win2k but did it anyway! ), if you can get ahold of xinput1_3.dll and stick it in the SP folder of the game-it works!
  14. Okay I did a reinstall and patch update with win2k on my main system again and just want to say the driver works great so far, I've been playing ST Elite Force 1 on it today and it works fine!
  15. Uninstalled current Zone Alarm, and tried the win2k compatible version of Comodo firewall I downloaded a while back-checked it in pcflank and it seems to be more secure than Zone Alarm (current)! That and Qupzilla seem to make an excellent combo! I may give win2k on my main system another shot!
  16. Here's the new status report, I tried putting on the UURollup on my main machine but when I tried XP compatiblity mode to install Firefox/Seamonkey-they installed but had graphics glitiches (this was after installing all kinds of other software beforehand so I might have broken something). I got weary of the whole thing and put XP on my main machine. Now I recently got my hands on an older compaq minitower off ebay recently as a backup computer in case my main machine failed, at 2.4 gigs P4 and 1 gig ram, but with only pci slots (not even agp to my shock!) I decided to try again with a win2k installation. This time having learned from my mistakes-everything went smoothly, before I installed any other programs I installed the upgrade patches and UURollup first, then went from there and everything went well, I now have a machine that can run the lastest version of Mozilla and Seamonkey. Having had nothing but trouble from avast (I couldn't even get the sucker to register on XP!-I used to love avast but I will NEVER mess with it again!) I ditched it for good and went with my installation of AVG 9 and with some looking at the settings, I was able to update the thing from the files I got from Browncoat so it's virus definitions are up to date! (btw will I have to always manually update or will it update automatically from now on?). I tried an installation of Outpost suite but having had the same inability to register the thing like avast (being on dialup had something to do with it no doubt) I went with Outpost firewall instead. Which brings me to another question, while poking around in Outpost firewall settings, I discovered the name of a website called www.pcflank.com which has tests you can do to see how good your computer protection is. I ran the quick and browser tests and found it gave me bad marks on my browser privacy while everything else was ok (I was using mozilla), I then tried the same tests with Qupzilla (with some privacy stuff tweaked like I did in Firefox) and the results were great! What my question is, is pcflank a legitimate site or just a big ad for Outpost firewall? Because the tests on my xp machine using up to date Zone Alarm (over 100 meg installation file in comparison to Outpost's being under 20 megs) were just plain awful in comparison to my win2k machine!
  17. Okay guys, here's a little status update. This weekend I installed 2000, the first update rollup 1, UR2 then the (now) next to latest daily version of UURollup, everything seemed fine and I decided to stick to Zone alarm as I have had a lot of experience with it, then I had clamwin installed-then I decided to install the free version of avast, I went for a minimal installation (which left the updater off that everyone said causes problems) but when I did-at the first scan it alerted on the uurollup patch (a file it had called sfc.dll) and an installed .dll file in the system32 directory of Windows by the same name (presumably from the patch) I deleted the UURollup patch and tried to get avast to delete the .dll in system32 (avast said it was some kind of trojan "banker" or something like that-however a ClamWin scan never alerted to that same .dll) but I couldn't do it. I then got the bright idea to try going into system32 manually to delete the thing with spybot's secure shredder, when I did avast wen't nuts and I got the blue screen of death. I had to do a fresh install of 2000, and went the route of only using update rollup 1 and ur2, then when I tried avast again (minimal settings again without the updater) when I restarted the whole thing would begin to freeze up and act funny. I'm considering the Outpost suite (I'll have to wait to go by the library to get my hands on it, I'm on dialup at home), but I have to ask is UURollup infected or is that just avast flipping out? If it's just avast's probem, I can install UURollup, but will it be compatible with Outpost? Sorry for all the questions, but it's been a rough weekend!
  18. Blackwingcat's driver works (you have to use the hardware function in control panel to install it), however you must use UURollup to be able to use it-which I've had to drop due to reasons I'll get into in my security thread.
  19. Before I attempt another move back to win2000, I was wanting to know everyone's experiences security wise-I plan to use zone alarm 7 (the last version compatible with win2000), clamwin (set to scan daily-it also seems to catch things even other antiviruses don't at times), spybot/malawarebytes (I run one or the other at least once a week) as well as attempt to use avast free antivirus if it works, if not AVG 9, basically a similar setup to what I have now with win 7 premium/XP installs. I haven't problems with that kind of setup, and since I'm going to use the UURollup patch, I'll be able to use the current versions of Firefox and Seamonkey like I do now. With that kind of setup, do I have any significantly more risk doing normal surfing that I would with my current OS? Right now I mainly do things like check e-mail, check out my favorite gaming sites (no problems there) and perhaps an occasional purchace from ebay/amazon, I'm on dialup so my computer doesn't stay constantly online all the time so do I really have anything to worry about provided I don't go off the beaten track? Just curious?
  20. I have a Geforce GT 620 on my currently built computer at the moment (using windows 7 right now) but I really would like to make it a windows 2000 system, the problem is that the last time I tried it-I couldn't get the thing to install even with Tomaz's XP compatibility mode patch-does anyone know of any drivers for that card that are win2k compatible?
  21. Okay since yesterday I ran into a number of issues-I installed in the order I mentioned before, only to run into a problem when I restarted the computer, it would go to the Win2000 loading screen then the computer would restart as though I hit the restart button! This happened with UUrollupv10e and the current stable version of 10. I thought I was going to have to settle for WinXp again, but I downloaded the current version of UUrollup11 and gave it one last try-for some reason version 11 works! I have a windows 2000 setup with the current version of Firefox and Semonkey on it-YAY!
  22. Turns out it wasn't the CCcleaner, I made 2 failed attempts to install everything before I finally got it working, here it is for those who need it: 1. Install Windows 2000 sp4 2. BEFORE you install or do ANYTHING else (not even install drivers for your motherboard) , install the unoffical 5.1 pack (make sure to reinstall when prompted) 3 Install UR2 pack, reinstall when prompted 4. install UUrollup last That got the job done!
  23. silly me I did that and it worked, only I'm having problems restarting! No big deal I think what happened is that I installed and ran CCcleaner before the final patch and I did a 'fix registry' thing on it-bad move! I'll reinstall and do things properly now.
  24. Okay got the hard drive in today and put the tower together, installed windows 2000, did the manual registry fix/diskmanager thing to format the unused space. Then I installed Update pack 1 then Ur2 then I tried to install UUrollupv10e only to get the error "c:\winnt\system32\shell32.dll is open or is in use by another program". Nothing I seem to do will get it to work?! Can I track down and delete that particular .dll to get the install to work or is there another solution?
  25. Okay I ordered a tower and hard drive yesterday to complete my computer project which I hope to have built and running in a couple of weeks. I assume from the way things are currently developing that UURollup-v10e is the most stable of the daily updates I assume? If I use that how do I apply it since it isn't an .exe file like the stable release?
