  1. OR use the ME explorer interface under Win98se by installing either RPlite5 with Shell update or 98SE2ME with option 3 to install the ME GUI under 98se. The ME Explorer GUI prevents the multiple screen saver icon bug from happening. MDGx's GRPHFLTS.EXE pack will need to be revised again. It still has a faulty INF file but now causes error message "INF Install Failure - Reason: Invalid INF File". I noticed now the GF.INF file is 85Kb which is WAY too big. Shrink it down and separate the info into two INF files. I'll send the revised INF files to MDGx.
  2. hmm, weird. I installed the Win98se SP 2.1a under my Win98 SE computer and I do NOT get this problem. are you trying to create at startup disk from the Format dialog box? Use the Create Startup Disk button from Add/Remove programs Startup Disk tab to make a Win98se Startup disk. Doing that from there creates a bootable Win98 system disk with CD-Rom drivers. or from a DOS prompt inside or outside Win98se, type SYS A: to copy the Win98se startup files onto an existing floppy disk as long as the disk is not full.
  3. hey MDGx. I did test out your 98SE2ME pack yesterday on a Win98se PC. I will say that when I used option 1 to install 98SE2ME (it took a while), the multiple screen saver icon bug occured as mentioned in MS article 280722. However, when I installed 98SE2ME with option 3 to install the WinME Explorer/Shell interface, the multiple screen saver bug was mostly fixed and prevented the bug from getting out of control. With the ME Explorer GUI installed under Win98se and testing out an MS screen saver, it'll now only display ONE screen saver icon and not display multiple screen saver icons when running a screen saver & coming out from it subsequent times. It was just like that in a normal WinME machine. so the problem in MS article 280722 is mitigated by using the ME Explorer GUI under Win98se
  4. nice suggestions, PROBLEMCHYLD. how about adding the True Type Font Properties Extension DLL file into the 98se SP [ttfext.dll]? I added that onto the latest beta of the 98FE SP2.x pack.
  5. interesting enough, winxpi, I installed MDGx's 98SE2ME pack with option 1 on a Win98se PC which installed version 4.90.3001 of the user.exe & user32.dll files and that also caused the multiple screen saver bug. BUT when I installed 98SE2ME again with option 3 to replace the 98se Explorer/Shell interface with the ME Explorer/Shell interface, the bug was "partially" fixed and prevented the bug from getting worse. got same results when installing Tihiy's RPLite5 pack with Shell Update option checked and the problem was mitigated. so replacing the 98se Explorer interface with the ME Explorer may fix the problem, sort of.
  6. that's ok Petr. I was able to get other people's input on it. I installed Tihiy's RPLite pack under Win98se and the multiple screen saver taskbar icon problems were greatly mitigated. seems like the RPLite5 pack mostly fixed the problem.
  7. balderdash. nonsense. does the ghostly screen saver taskbar icons cause crashes, blue screen errors or lockups? you have not been able to prove that. I have installed the latest version of Tihiy's Windows 98 Revolutions pack and it seemed to have mostly fixed the multiple screen saver taskbar icon problem on my old Win98se computer. one good reason to install and use Tihiy's Win98 Revo pack. With the RPLite5 pack installed under Win98se, only one ghost screen saver taskbar icon only appears and would sometimes disappear or wont display multiple ghost icons. Tihiy rules! and shadell's a fool!
  8. nah, changed my mind. I'll use msvcrt.dll version 6.1.9844.0 from win2k sp4 and put it in beta 4 of 98fe sp2 instead. that file worked ok under my winme computer; i'll test it out under all editions of win98. same with msvcp60.dll version 6.2.3104.0 from winxp sp2. i've removed the TTF font files in beta 3.
  9. 2_4Date.exe was released several months after Win98 SE so it still uses the m/d/yy format as default. MS changed the default date format in WinME and WinXP to display 4 digits for the year. not sure about Win2000. so Petr, what is your take about the "screen saver" icon taskbar problem in win98se mentioned at this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610 on my Win98se PC that has that problem, I just clicked on the screen saver icons on the taskbar and win98se will resume normally as if nothing bad happened at all. it's more of a minor display problem and is harmless. plus I dont use any screen savers.
  10. also that ol' win95 explorer interface is SO 1995 and anemic in file management. I use xplorer2 lite edition which is a nice alternative (and perhaps a nice replacement for any version of) Windows Explorer: http://www.zabkat.com/alldown.htm even the shareware based Total Commander tool has wonderful file management features that make Windows Explorer look lame.
  11. oops. not so. Attribute Changer (latest versions) does NOT work under windows 95. the "Change Attributes" menu command does not show up when right-clicking on a file, folder or drive as I had tested myself (whether IE Desktop Update is installed or not). Change Attributes option will appear in win98/me/2000/nt4/xp but not win95. I didnt realize this but Zabkat's xplorer2 lite/pro tool (a Windows Explorer replacement) has the option to change attributes, including Created and Modified dates. xplorer2 lite or professional edition can be downloaded here: http://www.zabkat.com/alldown.htm
  12. if you need other Win2k patches, see Axcel216 / MDGx Win2000 page and get them there: http://www.mdgx.com/w2ktoy.htm
  13. reaction from some other people from this forum about the screen saver taskbar problem: obviously, shadell, you have NOT really convinced us that the screen saver taskbar problem causes major problems (besides, where have you been this time, shadell? you have not been here for 5 months since your previous post, geez). does it cause blue screen errors, crashes or freezes on the Win98se PCs? NO! On my Win98se computer I've tested, the screen saver icon taskbar problem is practically harmless; I just click on those screen saver icons and they go away and Win98se continues on as if nothing bad happened. so adding the option to not install the user files in 98se SP is NOT necessary. end of story
  14. other memory "tweaks" found here: http://www.thpc.info/ram/vcache98.html http://www.thpc.info/ram/ramother.html Win95 users MUST use Vcache values, especially when using 512 Mb of RAM or more: http://www.thpc.info/ram/vcache95.html
  15. patching user.exe & user32.dll files in 891711? yup. like the idea. better than using kb891711.exe/q891711.dll files. I did remember Tihiy patching the user32.dll file for 98se making it 4.10.2232. he didnt patch the user.exe file and made another DLL file, ti891711.dll. Tihiy's version of 891711 was for win98se only.
  16. hmm, looks like the author of 918547 will need to patch the 98fe GDI files. the_guy, what is your input of the person at this thread suggesting to add an option to NOT install updated user.exe/user32.dll files from the 98se SP: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610 unfortunately he's experiencing the screen saver taskbar problem in 98se. seems to be mostly fixed in WinME since I only get one screen saver icon taskbar and not multiple screen saver taskbar icons in ME.
  17. ME Webvw.dll from 900725 should NOT be 5.50.3900.7069. Change it to 5.50.4134.7069 because original WEBVW.DLL from WinME is version 5.50.4134.100! I happen to have newer FPX32.FLT file than one found in the GRPHFLTS pack; it was from MS Works 6.0 [2001]. also, need your take on what shadell said in his posts here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610
  18. Another reason why I don't use antivirus software anymore (I upload suspicious files to online multiscanners like virusscan.jotti.org or inspect them manually). It's not even a virus by definition, as virii are supposed to infect other files. or worse, reformat the HD and lose everything on the HD or cause crashes
  19. AFAIK this is necessary in Windows 95 and Windows 98 Standard Edition only, the default short date format in Windows 98 Second Edition should be M/D/YYYY. Petr It is not, Petr. it's still M/D/YY when doing a CLEAN install of Win98 SE. In WinME M/D/YYYY is the default. BTW - I want to get your opinion of whether or not an option to not install updated user.exe & user32.dll files should be included in the 98se SP as mentioned by shadell here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610 have you encountered the screen saver taskbar problem in win98se Petr?
  20. try it, randiroo76073. run SMARTDRV and then do DELTREE. makes deleting files a lot faster, especially on really slow hard drives that delete data slowly without using Smartdrv.
  21. an option to not install the updated user files in the next release of the 98se SP is out of the question, shadell. sorry. we're still not sure if we can add that option (unless you can actually help us implement that option but it seems like you're too busy to help us or dont come here often enough). besides, I use third party screen savers on a Win98se PC which do NOT cause those ghost taskbar problems. either use 3rd party screen savers or disable using ANY screen savers from the Display control panel app. period! DONT use ANY Microsoft screen savers which cause the problems in the first place and Microsoft didnt bother to patch the "screen saver" icon bug in 98 SE. besides, you can NOT "pick and choose" which updated 98se files to install from the 98se SP anyway. so why bother. AND if you use the original USER.EXE and USER32.DLL v4.10.2222 files BUT install KB891711 or U891711 patch, you will have the "screen saver" icon problem again. But if you do NOT install KB891711 or U891711 the screen saver taskbar problem goes away BUT you will leave yourself vulnerable to the security problems in MS security bulletin MS05-002. so you're pretty much stuck, shadell. long term solution is to either disable using screen savers or use 3rd party screen savers. at least this problem has been "mostly" fixed in WinME since I only get one screen saver taskbar icon in ME and not multiple screen saver icons. next time the screen saver taskbar icon either stays or goes away in ME. I'll ask the rest of the people here and see what they think.
  22. not going to happen. besides, it'll make windows explorer just like win98/2k/me/xp i have no probs with installing IE Active Desktop Shell update which updates BOTH explorer.exe & shell32.dll to version 4.72.3612.1700 on my old Win95 osr2.5 PC. I have plenty of RAM installed on there. besides, that Spider Solitaire game included in ME doesnt work with shell32.dll version 4.00 and only works with shell32.dll 4.72 & above.
  23. Version 4.00.1116 of Win95 ESDI_506.PDR file fixes these problems mentioned in SEVEN Microsoft KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153471/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154435/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154436/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154976/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/160800/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/161642/EN-US/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171353/EN-US/ If Win95 users are using less than 4.00.1116 of esdi_506.pdr, please update to 4.00.1116 or higher to resolve these problems. It's important to note that the 48bit LBA edition of esdi_506.pdr v4.00.1111 does NOT fix these problems. The problems were already in existence (before LLXX created the 48bit LBA driver for Win95) and MS fixed them starting with v4.00.1116 of the PDR file.
  24. add it. I'll add the 98fe version of the 48bit LBA esdi_506.pdr fix onto the next beta of 98fe SP.
  25. Maybe my new code is just more efficient... REMOVE V4.00.1111 OF ESDI_506.PDR file, IMMEDIATELY! IT is FLAWED with power management bugs, UDMA bugs and other problems that are fixed with version 4.00.1116 of esdi_506.pdr from Q273468 & remideup.exe. Please patch ESDI_506.PDR files versions 4.00.1116 from Q273468 and 4.00.1118 from amdk6upd.exe and REMOVE 4.00.1111 of patched esdi_506.pdr OFF THIS SITE RIGHT AWAY. <I will delete this post when ESDI_506.PDR 4.00.1111 48Bit LBA driver for Win95 OSR2 has been removed from this thread>
