  1. Good thing you reminded, because i did it not the way Windows 7 does. Please test the prototype on Windows 8 with customized network userpic.
  2. Thank you very much for testing. I wonder where 'All programs' disappeared from the first screenshot. Also search box has different icon. I could remove limitations on not having non-rectangular panes but not sure about the shadow.
  3. Updated: - removed extra slot - fixed shutdown icon Thank you. What about skins?
  4. StartIsBack should support Windows 8.1. You can check out the prototype of the redone Start Menu, which i was working on hard the past few weeks. It's not for Windows 8.1 though. It's for Windows 7. Oh the irony...
  5. NOTE: THIS IS A TEST TOY, NOT A PROGRAM INTENDED FOR DAILY USE NOR REALLY A DEMO OF STARTISBACK FUTURE VERSION FOR TINKERERS / SKINNERS / WINDOWS 7 USERS Let's raise the curtain... So! Given the fact Microsoft did cut Start Menu out of Windows 8.1, it's kind of haunted spirit now. What to do? Resurrect it again! Good that 8.1 leak gave me time to do it. Now I'm giving you one toy - mostly useless for you, useful for me - full standalone start menu prototype. Download: http://tihiy.net/files/StartMenuToy.zip What for: - Test if Start menu reimplementation is good. I'm quite proud of what I've done in two months - 99% of the functionality reimplemented. I think. Far more faithful than Start8 - that's for sure. - Test if custom skins work well. For skinning you can probably test it on Windows 8 too. - Just to have a lot of startmenus on display. Test notes: - Works on Windows 7. Test in on Windows 7. Windows 8 / 8.1 - not really. - Userpic is not displayed. - Start menu is always on top and does not close as you expect. That may seem buggy but you have to think outside of the box. Exit it with Alt-F4 or right-click - EXIT. - Certain settings (like drag&drop, hover, context menu) are hardcoded. This thread is for: - Useful bug reports, explaining chain of your actions and your setup. - Useful screenshots. - NOT for Windows 8.1 discussion. - NOT for any kind of support. Admin: If this thread does not belong to this forum, please move it.
  6. Write me to support email with your license key specified.
  7. Just set the number of recent programs to lesser amount. Yes, orb suck. Unfortunately Microsoft fobid including windows logos with the program, but you can download them from the website.
  8. Try reinstalling app for your user, not all users. Ensure you have latest SIB version.
  9. Since 2.0. Do those apps still work? Does reboot helps? What's the names of the apps?
  10. Did installer ask you for a reboot? Do you have user or all users installation?
  11. Version 2.1 is finally out! http://startisback.com/#download-tab Changes over 2.1RC2: Due to Microsoft request, all start button images containing Windows logo were removed. Download them separately here.
  12. 2.1 is ready to go except the orb. If anyone wants to see a good orb in StartIsBack, please write me. Start buttons from deviantArt should do if they don't contain copyrighted images and author approves use of his work. If you can create good orb (Start button picture), please contact me via e-mail, the reward is implied.
  13. Version 2.1RC2 http://www.startisback.com/StartIsBack_setupRC.exe - Fixes for taskbar on Start Screen Since 2.1RC1 brought new features and changed installation methods for the first time since 1.0, lets test 2.1 more. Please test trial installs, if you have problems, please post details about your Windows type / install type, etc. If anyone has a good start button / logo idea, share it with me by mail.
  14. You should write me to e-mail. This can happen if time moved backwards.
  15. So do I. Turn on the disable taskbar translucency checkbox. It's off by default since 2.0. You need to add following value to registry \SOFTWARE\StartIsBack key EnableInSafeMode = 1 (DWORD value)
  16. Found and fixed another bug: start menu goes behind taskbar if taskbar is placed on screen side and returning from start screen by Windows key.
  17. You should check 'Disable taskbar translucency' in SIB properties.
  18. Nope. Note that right end on the taskbar brings to desktop (and peeks on it), as well as right-click -> Show Desktop.
  19. I'll provide it later since it will be very requested. Please let's not make a gazillion of posts about where to get it.
  20. Version 2.1RC1 http://www.startisback.com/StartIsBack_setupRC.exe New: - Option to show taskbar on the Start Screen. When enabled, taskbar is available on the Start Screen. It's also recolored to match Metro color. Supports auto-hide and secondary taskbars. Hot corners which are overlapped by taskbar on Start Screen behave like configured to behave on desktop. - "Pin to Start menu" is available in all programs shell context menus, not just in File Explorer - Excluded shortcuts for system shortcuts which are available on the right start menu pane (Run, Control Panel, etc) from start menu MFU program list - Multiple activations of the same license key is possible on same Windows installation but different hardware (to handle VMWare Fusion / Parallels Desktop) If you want to downgrade from this release, please uninstall it first. IMPORTANT I've received a request from Microsoft to remove start button orbs which contain Windows logo. This means Version 2.1 release must have all different orbs. I'm looking for a good designer to create a good-looking replacement start button picture.
  21. If Windows 8.1 comes with start menu, I would be glad. Too bad it won't happen, even if there is a huge motion for it inside Microsoft. One member of Windows team told me - "I think your app serves a need that we’re not serving right now." Let's wait for 8.1 release and I hope it won't feel so rushed, despite very short development time. Let's hope we will have StartIsBack.Next by then. 2.1RC1 should come next week with some new UI goodie and I hope some would like it.
  22. I'm sorry, but i don't understand your issue. Can you describe your scenario so someone could try to reproduce it? It could be some software conflict. Which satisfying answer do you expect?
  23. I read all posts and consider any feedback. No timeline for those features though.
  24. That's because they are. Furthermore, for example, unchecking 'Store recently opened programs' in Jump List properties window also deletes Run and Open/Save dialogs history. That does not make much sense, but that's how its done in Windows 7/8. It's better not to touch those options and just set '0' to to recent program count in SIB options.
  25. Go to Advanced - check off Store and display recently opened programs. Recently used program list is not just-used program list, it's the list sorted by internal usage rating which Windows calculates, which includes last launch time, lauch count, switching to the program count, etc.
