  1. Can't share the details about 8.1 until 8.1 releases and I try it. Please wait a few days.
  2. Fixed this. Known issue. Start button should be redone for 8.1 anyway.
  3. Mainly because All Programs button will be 'hanging' in the white space on the half of the menu.ace2, you can unleash your mad skills here now: https://moot.it/startisback
  4. New StartIsBack! StartIsBack has been reborn and you can taste it now! https://moot.it/startisback Yet it won't excite you; it is (should be) exactly like version 2.1. It won't function properly on Windows 8.1 yet. There is no 8.1 yet to start with... This is build just for testing which will evolve into new StartIsBack for Windows 8.1. Not sure how to name it. Try keeping discussion on that forum; not sure if it's good enough.
  5. You have quite an eye I must say. I'm slowing down PCs and painting algorithms to notice that.
  6. That's quite possible since painting is redone in this version. Updated for double-buffering; please retest. And I promise i'll return to different heights issue - eventually. Well, this still looks confusing and skins don't quite allow that. I'll try to think of something.
  7. Updated toy: various minor fixes and improvements. I think I'm done with toy for now. I've completed first integrated StartIsBack.Next alpha build and it rocks - it actually uses less resources than native Windows 8 start menu - less memory, objects, threads, handles, I/O operations. Stay tuned.
  8. OK but how it looks in when you search? All programs button is still visible or what fills the place above search box pane?
  9. I still don't understand how should search (openbox) look when searchbox and logoff haves have different height. Only clipping or holes come to mind. Or you intend to give them same height in their search state? Yep, confirmed this. Top margin for folders pane should be added to userpic height then. That could happen on Windows 7. Don't see this. Don't see this either. Yep.
  10. I've added legacy userpic loading (if domain joined only). The rest of Windows 8 does not pick it though; i guess there should be some new tool for setting picture via .accountpicture-ms.
  11. Is it just height or width too? How does/should search view look with different heights? That's strange because it should. Currently it reads only bottom one. Yes, animations are bit different but they're smoother than native ones. Blending is done in separate thread to improve responsiveness.
  12. Remove your walls of text, ace2. Better test which start menu policies do not work in toy which work in native menu. Updated toy - Removed pane size restrictions - Built-in basic style for high contrast theme (test) - Userpic context menu (Windows 8) - Legacy userpic is loaded if PC is domain joined
  13. Press ctrl-alt-delete, choose Start Task Manager, then File - Run, press Browse, find the downloaded startisback setup exe, press OK.
  14. Sorry for the trouble. Seems like uninstallation did not work correctly. Reinstall StartIsBack (start it via task manager) and uninstall it again.
  15. Good thing you reminded, because i did it not the way Windows 7 does. Please test the prototype on Windows 8 with customized network userpic.
  16. Thank you very much for testing. I wonder where 'All programs' disappeared from the first screenshot. Also search box has different icon. I could remove limitations on not having non-rectangular panes but not sure about the shadow.
  17. Updated: - removed extra slot - fixed shutdown icon Thank you. What about skins?
  18. StartIsBack should support Windows 8.1. You can check out the prototype of the redone Start Menu, which i was working on hard the past few weeks. It's not for Windows 8.1 though. It's for Windows 7. Oh the irony...
  19. NOTE: THIS IS A TEST TOY, NOT A PROGRAM INTENDED FOR DAILY USE NOR REALLY A DEMO OF STARTISBACK FUTURE VERSION FOR TINKERERS / SKINNERS / WINDOWS 7 USERS Let's raise the curtain... So! Given the fact Microsoft did cut Start Menu out of Windows 8.1, it's kind of haunted spirit now. What to do? Resurrect it again! Good that 8.1 leak gave me time to do it. Now I'm giving you one toy - mostly useless for you, useful for me - full standalone start menu prototype. Download: http://tihiy.net/files/StartMenuToy.zip What for: - Test if Start menu reimplementation is good. I'm quite proud of what I've done in two months - 99% of the functionality reimplemented. I think. Far more faithful than Start8 - that's for sure. - Test if custom skins work well. For skinning you can probably test it on Windows 8 too. - Just to have a lot of startmenus on display. Test notes: - Works on Windows 7. Test in on Windows 7. Windows 8 / 8.1 - not really. - Userpic is not displayed. - Start menu is always on top and does not close as you expect. That may seem buggy but you have to think outside of the box. Exit it with Alt-F4 or right-click - EXIT. - Certain settings (like drag&drop, hover, context menu) are hardcoded. This thread is for: - Useful bug reports, explaining chain of your actions and your setup. - Useful screenshots. - NOT for Windows 8.1 discussion. - NOT for any kind of support. Admin: If this thread does not belong to this forum, please move it.
  20. Write me to support email with your license key specified.
  21. Just set the number of recent programs to lesser amount. Yes, orb suck. Unfortunately Microsoft fobid including windows logos with the program, but you can download them from the website.
  22. Try reinstalling app for your user, not all users. Ensure you have latest SIB version.
  23. Since 2.0. Do those apps still work? Does reboot helps? What's the names of the apps?
  24. Did installer ask you for a reboot? Do you have user or all users installation?
  25. Version 2.1 is finally out! http://startisback.com/#download-tab Changes over 2.1RC2: Due to Microsoft request, all start button images containing Windows logo were removed. Download them separately here.
