I can create a tool which skips or disables metro totally or partially for Win8 explorer.exe, without any services. However, it's not interesting without proper Start menu and is totally different story.

If you have Hungarian versions of both Win7 and Win8 and placed explorer.exe.mui to "hu-HU" subfolder you should be fine. If not, you must use "en-US" explorer.exe.mui. You can download MUI for win7 from Microsoft, any language: http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-mui-language-packs-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/ Open downloaded exe with WinRAR and find explorer.exe.mui inside.

That's uhh, not my bug. Copy IE shortcut to desktop and you will notice same thing in context menu, in explorer8 too. I guess some value is missing from win8 registry...

When upgrading, you must first run patchex7 and select "8", then re-logon in order to be able to replace files. After replacing files, run patchex7 and select "7". Note that patchex7.exe changed to utilize 7.reg/8.reg when used. You can examine what changes in registry.

It won't be possible to reinstate Metro in win7 explorer since it doesn't have trusted signature, and circumventing it would require patching kernel. Now i'm busy trying to restore pin list / mfu start menu functionality. It's hard work (CP->RP cut 200KB code off shell32.dll which i need to recreate). Metro bits require circumventing WinRT trust levels and i haven't succeeded yet.

You need to reset tray icon cache to get them working. Re-run patchex7, 7-Y-Y

Worked fine on leaked x64 RTM, no special actions needed. Non-transparent gray taskbar looks not so good though. I'm on vacation now and will resume development in two weeks.

You're not the only one. Win7 one is hard to port, but if you have Win8 DP around, you can try swapping pnidui.dll, van.dll and netshell.dll (and corresponding mui files) from system32 dir.

Unpin original explorer and pin new one. They're different programs and it should be comprehensible, as well as start menu dual nature. I'll add those facts to thread third post.

You mean specifying keyboard shortcuts for start menu items? Works for me. It changes shell in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, it should work that way in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Well MS never liked any tools which are patching system files, didn't they? I hope your technet post won't lead to more features removed from RTM.

I believe (read somewhere?) that MS resticted win8 x64 to 64-bit shell only. But fear not, beta 1 will have 64-bit support. I can't promise ETA now, but it should be soon enough.

Yes, not loading Metro may save dozens MB of RAM. This happens if mui file isn't loaded; ensure you placed explorer.exe.mui file to the proper xx-XX subdir (where xx-XX is same language win8 has or en-US).

All programs shown in explorer7 has the same shortcuts that explorer8 shows on Start Screen. So the changes you do reflect here and there; better backup desktop.lnk from start menu. Explorer Ribbon is still there, it's not explorer.exe related! Using explorer.exe from Windows 8 DP won't give solve many problems, it's shell32 which was cut of start menu features.
