  1. I don't think StyleXP can be a '30 day trial' cause it is basically a hack of the msstyles DLL file. The Stylebuilder program is the trial. It is the app TGTSoft has created to allow you to make your own themes. There will be plenty of 'cr*cks out there once it is out of beta - I am sure of that. hehehehe LS
  2. XPerties -- I am running a beta of their new wizard based app. This one is a bit rough around the edges - but I should have an update soon. I will post a link (or make avaiable somehow) as soon as I get the update and you can try it yourself. LS
  3. Speaking of loud -- add a couple of scsi hard drives to the mix. Those suckers can wake the dead sometimes. LS
  4. next time -- you should know that there is a file caled boot.ini that contain all the 'stuff' especially for dual boot systems. always keep a backup on that file - call it boot.bck or something. Anyway - if you had a backup of that file -after re-isntalling w98 - you could have just copied that file and been done. LS
  5. the new XP Nero RULES!!!!!!!!!!!! LS
  6. Do you happen to have a particular application that was tagged during your xp install (upgrade) that was called out as not xp ready? Just curious - as I have never seen a compatibility update message in several months of running XP. Maybe a particular app is triggering the notice??????????? LS
  7. .... a very moving link. Thank you XPerties....I was reminded of my absolute favorite Priest - Father John - because he has an uncanny ability to frame his message the way I can understand it (takes a very good framer - if you know what I mean). This hits very close to the heart - an I plan on sharing with all my 'loved' ones. Thanks again ----- Lance
  8. TomB --- just go straight to the alcatel site -- I am looking at it now ( http://www.alcatel.com/consumer/dsl/supuser.htm ) and they have upgrade drivers for XP. That might be all you need. Driver or firmware or both. Don't see anything for firmware, but I would try the driver right away. LS
  9. First suggestion to both posts -- make sure your Cable/DSL modems are running with the absolute latest firmware. I started experiencing similar problems (had to reset the cable modem every day or so) in order to reestablish service. Something wrong with the dynamic IP address leasing service in the modem under XP. After upgrading firmware though - haven't had to reset the modem in a month! Also - a curiousity question for TomB... how do you know the connection is active (and working) unless you do try to "scroll to a new page" or something? If you are relying on the little green lights on the DSL modem - don't. Under these circumstances they lie! They are getting a ping response - but the IP address assigned internally to your network are the problems. LS
  10. I have been using media player to 'burn' audio cds from my mp3 files with no problem. To make a new playlist, just click on the Media Library button. A new selection will appear toward the top of the player to make New Playlist. Click that and then you can drag and drop or browse for files. Then select that playlist and click Copy to CD or Device. Make sure all fits and click Copy button. Piece o cake. Seems to do the real-time conversion to audio CD format faster than roxio ever did also. LS
  11. actually ------ neowin AND themexp both have Logon Screens --- just to keep the record straight. LS
  12. I agree with AaronXP - I have had 3 computers on my home network on 24/7 (except for needed reboots for updates or Windows 'issues') ever since I got high-speed internet access 3 years ago. The OSes have included Win98SE, Win2K, and now XP. I will add that XP seems to require the fewest reboots due to resource issues, but still should be given a breath of fresh air now and then. LS
  13. Hermit - try these searches: http://xp.modrica.com/forum/showthread.php...t=less+or+equal http://xp.modrica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1386 these should help
  14. Go here for tutorials and downloads of tools: http://www.digital-digest.com Also - like this sight for general info and downloads + reviews: http://www.afterdawn.com/ Keep us posted on your progress. I have just tried a couple of times with mixed results. You be the guinnea pig and recommend the best tools you find!!!! heheheh Lance
  15. XPerties - I do not think that renaming them works. They are still huge bitmap files rather than the more compact jpg or gif format. I tried renaming when I ran into this problem a while ago - they are still viewable but not compressed. The only way I could handle 'renaming/converting' was to actually use an image software to do the "save as" --- Let me know if I have missed something that does actually convert the bitmap to a jpg etc. Lance
  16. Try these http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...onymous|5241632 Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format if Username:Password Is Part of the URL (Q260650) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q250747 Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension (Q250747) good luck....
  17. drew - try creating this boot.ini in the root of the C: drive. I have the same setup win98 on c: and winxp on d: -- if it doesn't work, you can alsways boot to a dos disk and delete the created file and re-boot. boot.ini content follow here: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINNT [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:="Microsoft Windows"
  18. never mind - have you been here: h*tp://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpd09005.html LS
  19. is it a USB printer?
  20. I think the 'copy protection' being referred to here is the OS you get from computer oem's. They all use the standard Microsoft EULA but are shipping bios locked OS cd's for the most part. That is the copy protection the eula is referring to. In reality - the actual OS setup files are usually buried somewhere on the CD so the bios locking or copy protection only goes so far. Lance
  21. have you checked to make sure your scsi is terminated?
  22. ...... for evaluation purposes only - of course
  23. Well.....you can install XP on as many systems as you want with the right iso file - can't you?
  24. I suppose I will be the first to ask for the obvious information. Have you checked Sony web site for updated drivers, etc? Is Sony offering an XP Upgrade program that covers your particular machine? Is this the 'cam' that is built into some of the VAIO's? Gotta give more info to get a meaningful answer. Lance
  25. It sounds as if you are talking about seperate physical drives: Drive 0 = C & D and Drive 1 = E. If that is the case, I can probably help, as that is the same setup I have (at home). Let me know, and I will email the contents of boot.ini to you. You should then be able to copy that into your boot.ini and be good to go.... Lance
