Yeah, I installed it in VMWare this morning... wow... Does it actually work as well as the "big boys" though? Would it be enough for the common user? I've been looking for a good AV for my parent's island laptop that's only got 128MB of RAM, so F-Prot would seem like a good candidate.

Why did you choose the 9250? You can get the 9550 for the same price... albeit a different manufacturer - Sapphire. Link You also get more features out of the 9550. I've heard that it can handle games like Doom3 and HL2 pretty decently. Also, you do realize that with this setup, the ability to upgrade the core components is virtually nil. I'd have to say more bandwidth. 256MB of graphics is a lot of memory for a game, so the extra 256 probably wouldn't do much. Having the memory access near instant on the other hand...

You're saying that you'd like to set up one computer and then clone that computer onto 10 others? I'm not sure of any cheap and easy way of imaging the drives (there are troubles with XP and the HAL and all that...), but you could work on getting a good UA CD/DVD going. That way when a new computer arrives, simply pop in the CD/DVD and you'll have a fully functional computer at your disposal. Have a look here for more info. Hope this helps!

File systems are simply a manner in which the operating system can keep track of the files on the disk. It's a storage algorithm and nothing more. So in short... no.

I said before that I use NOD32, and I still do - it's still the best IMO. But I've been trying out a number of other AV programs... F-prot interested me since I heard that it's super light on resources (only ~5-8MB RAM used). Does it really work as well as another "full-bodied" anti-virus? I was impressed when I installed it in VMWare, that it was so simple, but I'm kinda sketchy on its effectiveness. BitDefender seems like a good alternative as well. It comes with anti-spam and a firewall as well, and I didn't notice any lag doing anything in VMWare. So far so good. As for Kaspersky... it may have the best definitions... but ****! is it ever slow! On-demand scans take just as long as Norton and for general usage it slows things down terribly. Good for a backup, on-demand scanner if you ever run into trouble, but not as a real-time scanner... blech! I also tried Panda... seems too bloat and "pretty" for me. It's trying to be too much like Norton.

hehe... I haven't put my two cents in yet... I've tried a lot of audio ripping software out there... but I've always come back to CDex. Very simple interface, simple CDDB setup, and options galore. Dump the latest L.A.M.E. encoder in the program directory and set it to 128-320kbps VBR and you're golden. Definately can't go wrong there.

I've never played the game, but I can understand that its frusterating when you have people who kill you just for fun. I remember playing a MMORPG called Redmoon during its beta and they had some events where it was a free-for-all - you could kill anyone without any penalty, and the person who was killed didn't loose anything either. There was one guy (level 400 or so... rediculously high for the game) who would always come in to the lower level areas and kill anyone who was trying to have a duel. When you're having fun trying to play with a friend and some jerk comes along and kills both of you it's really annoying... I'm wondering if there is any reason to make a comparison between WoW and FF-XI. I don't know much about the two, but I've haven't heard any horror stories like JasonGW's about FF-XI. Anyone care to jump in here?

Very nice...that's one nice laptop you've got there... I should do the same with mine... it's got a little bit more wear and tear tho... 1 1/2 years will do that to it (and a couple of stupid handling errors... but it's my first laptop...).

There are others who read these threads and made decisions based upon what people write - so I'm just here to help them. And sorry if that offended you. By "fanatic", I meant enthusiast or supporter. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No offense taken - people are just quick to judge these days. For someone like me who uses the browser all the time (it's only closed when I go to sleep...) I think it's worth it to pay the developers a bit of money for a good quality product. In the end, to each his own.

Why do you have MS Java installed? Use the Sun Java installer instead. The MS Java is no longer supported by anyone due to legal rights.

I don't think it's clear that I'm an Opera "fanatic" - it's just that Opera is my favorite because I've never had any problems with the program itself. Did I ever make any sort of fanboi statement like "Opera is teh 1337!!!1111"? People are very quick to judge these days... As for feature lists, Opera provides many more than Avant (I'd know since Avant was the first non-IE browser I ever tried). prathapml has made several such lists... you can search for them if you wish. You admit that you haven't used Opera for some time... so how can you make a statement like the one about Opera improperly rendering pages? The lastest release (8.01) nearly passes the Acid2 test, which means that it's the best at handling poorly written CSS. And it's not the HTML that Opera users blame... it's the sites that purposefully send Opera the wrong page. If you load up the code that is sent to IE/Firefox in Opera for any of these sites, it will render just fine. You can even trick these sites into sending you their IE/Gecko pages to avoid this problem. To play devil's advocate here... what about website developers? If they follow standards, they can - and have - rendering problems in IE based browsers because MS hasn't followed standards when building their rendering engine. When writing a webpage, I do care about proper HTML (which is only the half of it) because that's how I know it will turn out right in a good browser.

Programs will put certain files in the Windows/system32 directory when installed. Also, hotfixes save their uninstallers in the Windows directory. Enable viewing of hidden and system files to see these directories (They're listed as KBXXXXXX...(insert more stuff here)). You can delete them if you wish, it just means that you won't be able to uninstall the hotfixes.

It's not my place or responsibility to do that for them. It's the first time that it's happened, but I'm just surprised that three e-mails all came within the past 10 hours.

I just need to vent.... I'm sure that the mods here can feel my pain. I'm the moderator of the student computers and mailing lists for my department at UBC (Engineering Physics). The mailing lists are meant to be used by the students for discussion regarding department related events. Last night, a student sent out an e-mail regarding a Canada Day weekend frat party. This in itself is not on. What's worse though is that upon recieving the e-mail (I'm guessing, since this is the first time that I've seen these types of e-mails), two other students decide to promote their own events - one was a CD release party, the other was some other thing that I didn't even bother to read. Why do these people think that all of a sudden the rules have changed?!?!?!? I was nice today and sent out a warning e-mail to the entire list (to curb any other people who might think that this is ok), but my "ban" finger is really twitchy... and the next sign of rule-breaking... man... they better watch out! Thanks... I needed to get that out...

Mind providing some links to pages that Opera doesn't render properly? As for Avant Browser, it's still based on IE, so it means that any vulnerability in IE is still a problem for you. At least the Maxthon developers work on patching some of the security holes of IE.

I have to agree with this. The concept of proper memory management is completely lost to Java students, while one of the first things you learn about with C++ is pointers and dynamic memory (those **** seg faults and bus errors... ). Also in Java, the ability to pass by reference is completely lost... something that is very useful in programming. I know a friend of mine had written a program in C that she ultimately had to convert to Java... it went from a nice clean bunch of code to a clunky ugly comglomerate of classes that contained 2 data members and one method...

Opera is my personal favorite. A really great trick is that you can "trick" some sites that don't work properly in Opera (because of poorly written browser checks) to send it their Mozilla code. This is one way of getting around the Hotmail "Junk E-mail" problem. By editing the ua.ini file, you can tell the hotmail site to send you the IE version of the site, and everything will render perfectly. I'm wondering if there's a simliar function in FF... Also... the speed of Opera is just unbeatable...Everything just renders so fast!

I've been using a little addon for extra adblocking ability. http://nontroppo.org/wiki/OperaAdblock It's small and fast and does the trick quite well. The C++ version is probably your best bet (C++ > Python, anything...). As for Java, the JRE is all you need. As long as you got the Opera installer that didn't exclude Java, you should be fine.
