  1. I think I'm following your thinking here. I can understand the basis for comparing the track record of programs, but in the end, what we have on the market today is what really matters. If IE6 has been around for several years, but that also means that Microsoft has had several years to patch any security flaws that have come up over the years (See here for an example of a highly critical unpatched vulnerability for IE from 2003). If someone were to decide to use a browser that used to have several flaws, but doesn't anymore because the vendors/developers fixed the flaws, would that really be an issue? I agree with you that a lot of the Firefox hype has been made by the public, and not the Mozilla group. It's also interesting how many of the "new and innovative" features of Firefox have been around in other browsers for quite some time now. [offtopic] As for the security of OSes, I agree with you that Linux is not as bulletproof as some people make it seem. The only difference here is that no hacker would target Linux computers because it simply wouldn't make a big difference to everyday life. [/offtopic]
  2. You can get your programs to install as normally after the windows install. All you need is to omit the switches. I'd suggest using RunOnceEx for this kind of method. It will run through your list of programs and whatever you don't want, simply "Cancel" the installation. Hope this helps!
  3. Yes, the command window defaults to C:\. The instructions on this are found here. *a few minutes later* Yup... changing the command window starting directory to the default fixed the trick. Now I get to play with your program! Maybe a future release could get around this problem? EDIT After some playing around, I may have found a bug... I choose to remove everything except for the Toolkit, but when I install it, I get the Nero Burning ROM, and Nero Xpress, on top of the Toolkit. Any ideas?
  4. So where does that put me? I'm still confused on this, since it's not me trying to make money or sell stuff. The Frog Plague is more of a joke than a trade program, but the Opera affiliate link has the potential to get Opera some revenue... Does that mean the Opera affiliate links have to go? I'm just trying to get clarification to follow the rules. Thanks!
  5. I don't think I would be that incapable of following instructions... Screenshot Or did i screw up...? If I did, I'll feel like a total id***.
  6. That's the one... thanks gamehead200.
  7. It is possible to avoid re-activating your Windows by copying a file from your hard drive to your UACD. I can't remember which file it is, but do a search and you'll find what you want.
  8. Do you want to hide the icons from the desktop? Download TweakUI from Mircosoft and you'll be able to do that.
  9. I'd suggest not replacing the actual NTOSKRNL.EXE file, and using StarDock's BootSkin instead. If anything goes wrong with the BootSkin, you'll still always be able to get into Safe Mode to reapply the default boot screen.
  10. I spent a good 20 minutes at the site you linked, and while digging though the many pages of vulnerabilities, I found that many of them were irrelevant, since they referred to old versions of Opera. It's not very scientific or intelligent to refer to old data. And yes, let's head over to Secunia... and find how many unpatched security flaws? Zero. Yes, there were 5 flaws found (3 moderately critical, 2 Less critical), but all of them have been patched by version 8.01. IE has 30% of it's 82 security advisories unpatched (14% extremely critical), and Firefox 1.x has 32% of its 19 unpatched (0% extremely critical, 14% highly critical). What are you showing by pointing out the flaws in Opera 7? Everyone who bought a licence to Opera 7 got a free upgrade to Opera 8, so the number of users still on Opera 7 is pretty much nil. I don't really like being called a zealot (read more on zealotry), since I actually do take the time to read about security advisories and the problems with operating systems and browsers. I'll agree with you that there are many people who simply say that one is better than the other without giving justification. Also... next time you post a lot of information, it helps the rest of us if you split it up into paragraphs. One big long paragraph makes it look like a rant and most people will just skim over it (I read the whole thing though).
  11. I'm just wondering about the announcement that was posted today by xper regarding affiliates in signatures. I'm guessing that this includes the Opera affiliate program (get 250 unique referrals - get a free license of Opera). Am I right? Does this also mean that we should remove any images linking to software? (For example, the GetFirefox links) I'm just wondering why this decision was made. The Opera affiliate program is a way for me to get a free licence for a great piece of software, and I know that I get a couple of hits per day from the link in my signature. If we cannot have affilitates in our signatures, would it be allowed to start a thread between members to help raise our affiliate counts? Thanks in advance!
  12. Well... if you want our help, you have to explain what you want a little bit more clearly. As for your question, I think what you want is a way to install programs automatically so that if you need to re-install Windows, your programs will be there as well. You don't integrate the installers into the I386 directory of the Windows CD, but instead, follow the guide on the Unattended CD webpage (link at top of the site). There are instructions on how to install programs automatically for you after you're done installing Windows.
  13. Nope... I haven't renamed it or anything... it's just downloaded and awaiting shrinkage.
  14. It seems like it's the right thumb for me all the time. I'm right handed too.
  15. Hehe... I a lot of people like summer the best because of the "view". I guess you've never seen a really pretty girl wearing a tight-fitting ski suit rushing past you on the hill...
  16. Umm... look at the link you provided... The latest date there is 2005-02-13 (more than 4 months ago), and it doesn't affect Opera 8... The next one is dated 2004-11-24, and also doesn't affect Opera 8. The only security issue that I've ever heard of with Opera was a URL spoofing issue that actually affected all browsers, and that problem was fixed in Opera 8.01. So I've "educated" myself a little bit, and haven't put my foot in my mouth... As for the "Firefox & spyware" discussion... if Firefox is "immune" to spyware, then how come SpywareBlaster 3.4 still has updates and entries for Mozilla based browsers?
  17. Well, I finally got a chance to try this app out... but when I try to run it, I get the error (in a bright red, I might add... ) ERROR: Nero Package 1 was not found in this directory. The minimum version is Nero-6.6.0.12.exe or higher. Press any key to continue . . . The Nero-6.6.0.14.exe file is located in that directory. I've edited the .cmd file as instructed, but that shouldn't have anything to do with this (I don't think). I'm running an administrator account, and I've tried running NCAB.exe in compatibility mode for Win95 and Win98. Any ideas?
  18. Umm... other... Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, Lamborghini...

    Nice... very very funny...
  20. You might be able to find the video card for under $50, but the rest of the setup will cost you more, since the technology is newer.
  21. AGP is better than PCI. PCI-E is better than AGP though... but that's probably out of your price range.
  22. You can use nLite to set up the Unattended portion of your XP install. But for a first step and the purpose of knowing what's going on, follow the Unattended guide and make the answer file yourself. It's not that hard and should only take you 20 mins. It seems to me like you're looking for an "easy way out" for Unattended installs... this isn't quite how things work, especially for the first time. There are some people who have been working on their Unattended installs for years and have kept on improving upon them and adding to them. They all started with the basics however...
  23. Yes, what k0spect8 said is correct, but you can automate this task by putting the WPA.dbl file in the $OEM$\$$\System32 folder of your install CD. That will have the file there on first boot, and activation will never bother you again!
  24. Like I said, it's the file path to where the program can be found. You have some options as to where to put the software itself. The most basic option is in a folder such as $OEM$\$1\Installs\(Software name)\. As for where to put the RunOnceEx.cmd file, read here. Actually read it. All the information is there. Creating a UACD for the first time is not an easy task for most people. I'm pretty computer-savvy, but it still took me a couple of tries to get everything working properly. Take your time and read everything carefully. If you get stuck, read it again (we'll now if you haven't ). Then Google to see if your problem has come up before. Then come back here and ask for more help. As for testing your CD, it's best to run the ISO in either VMWare or VirtualPC. That way, you won't be wasting CDRs and you'll know that in the end your CD will work.
  25. DVD Shrink is still a great piece of software... I don't really know what more I would want from it. For burning DVDs with data, Nero does the job well. For backing up my DVDs, DVD Shrink is the way to go.
