CPUs in 2060 Smarter Than Every Human Brain

How do you program imagination...? -
Time for an upgrade, no? I'm surprised the system is running on 250W in the first place. I would put that system at 400W at least (with 2 HD and 2 optical drives).

Strange rendering problem - Firefox only
Zxian replied to Zxian's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
Ok... never mind... it works now... EDIT Wait a minute... it works because I changed the z-index of the three images. If I set something with z-index:-1, does that put it behind the background? -
I've got a minor problem with my site that I can't seem to figure out. Link - WIP When opened in IE or Opera, three images appear in the bottom right corner regarding Notepad++, CSS validation, and XHTML validation. The three images are displayed as follows in the .html file: <p class="standards"> <a href="http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm" target="_blank"><img src="npp.logo4.png" alt="Made with Notepad++" border="0" height="31" width="88" /></a> <a href="http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http://www.phas.ubc.ca/~nkjg/main2.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/images/vcss" alt="Valid CSS!" border="0" height="31" width="88" /></a> <a href="http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=referer" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.w3.org/Icons/valid-xhtml10" alt="Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional" border="0" height="31" width="88" /></a> </p> "standards" is defined as follows. .standards { /*text-align:right;*/ position:absolute; right:0px; bottom:0px; z-index:-1; } Any ideas? I'm new to all this, so I'm not sure what I should look out for.

Did you remember to search? The PowerDVD problem has been addressed before. I'm not sure about WMP, but it could be the same fix.

Nope... this is crap. There is no VLK for Windows XP Home Edition. Period. Volume Licence Keys are meant for large corporations who need to install Windows on hundreds of computers. When the VLK is used, that copy of Windows does not need to be activated (something that would take hours to do on that many computers). When dealing with that many computers, the extra features of XP Professional are almost necessary for system administrators to do their job. The company will typically save more money by purchasing a VLK for their computers than having the Admin set up all the XP Home computers with equivalent software.

Yes, they are useful sometimes, but for the most part, they just sit there unused. I never said that you were stupid, but most consumers are. They buy things because sales reps tell them that they "need" it, or it's "better". I know a woman that bought a Dell XPS because the sales rep told her that it was faster... and she needed something for the internet and word processing.... absolutely rediculous. I could have built her something that would have done everything she could ever want for 1/3 of the price.

Does it have this problem when printing to other printers? For example the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer that should have been installed when you installed Office? Try printing that as well and if it has the same effect, post it here. If the image "prints" fine, then I would suggest re-installing your printer drivers.

@Godzilla - Wow... that's handy! Thanks.

I suggest that you contact Linksys and ask them how to resolve the problem. If it doesn't work with either the mainstream firmware or the modified firmware then the unit is defective (a rare case - trust me), and you should RMA it. The so-called Super-G routers only work with their corresponding wireless card counterparts. i.e. if you've got a Centrino laptop (which has an Intel wi-fi card by definition), then you won't get any speed boost with a Super-G router over a standard 802.11g router.As for the original question, I would recommend Linksys. As WhatBackHand said, Dlink routers don't work that well with non-Dlink cards. I had a D-link router a while back, and even with the firmware that was supposed to allow Centrino cased laptops to connect, I would get kicked from the network every 5 minutes. My friend has a D-link wireless card, and now, all of a sudden, the drivers are giving her BSODs... go figure. Netgear - I've heard mixed reviews. Some people love them, others hate them. It's up to you. I've had my Linksys WRT54G for about a year now, and it's been absolutely rock solid (touch wood). The administration interface is simple and straightforward, yet it gives you control of many features. If you aren't going to be doing a lot of large file transfers over wireless, you may want to look into an 802.11b router. I also have a Linksys BEFW11S4, which is also rock solid. For a plain router with wireless, it does the job just fine. Not to mention Linksys is having a promotion on their 802.11b products - Link.

Umm... I'm guessing it's the other way around. At work, I have absolutely no need for a SD card (or any other media card) reader built into my computer. At home, that's a different story, since that's where I would transfer pictures from my digital camera. Business PCs are usually the barebones systems that the employees need. Bells and whistles are selling points to lure in stupid customers.

Other... Notepad++. It may not have the instant update of what the page looks like, but it's a much more hands on approach to writing the webpage. Not to mention that it does syntax highlighting...makes it really easy to see those simple mistakes that might be more difficult to see in other programs.

So... it's black then? Mind posting a screenie or the bmp itself?

Very interesting... It'll definately bring out a little more realism to the situation if you were to play a scary game like D3... some big monster jumps out at you and you get scared... raise your arms in shock, the person in the game gets "shocked" as well. I'll definately be checking this out in stores when it comes out. Nintendo may have something here.

Man... you're all about the polls, aren't you? As for your question, that all depends. How much music do you have? Would you use the iPod (nano or otherwise) for data storage? How long are you going to be away from a power outlet? Simply asking others "what should I get" without explaining what it is that you want isn't going to get you the best product. For me, I've got 22GB of music... so neither of those would suit me very well. In the end, you have to decide for yourself.

Is this the battery status icon in the system tray? Is it meant to be like the Longhorn battery instead of the default blue one? Thanks for the update XPero!
-
@Phyridean - Do you have a link or guide on how to configure this? I'm very curious to see how it stands up to a third-party firewall.
-
I've never used it, and after reading this, I probably never will. There are many better ways of protecting yourself from spyware... first off - common sense.
-
Like bmn... how is the memory usage? Has the memory leak been fixed (i.e. leave it running for a good few hours... what's the mem usage at)?
-
Yes, but I don't think that Microsoft would really crack down on modifying files that make people like their software even more (the uxtheme.dll patch for example) if no one is profiting from it. They will crack down on people not paying for their products by using illegal methods, such as VLKs. Like xper said... =============== <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My interpretation... the discussion of piracy itself is allowed... how to go about performing it or doing something illegal isn't. To give an extreme example, we could talk about why people steal cars, but the moment that someone starts writing about how to circumvent security systems and hot-wire a car, the thread would most likely be closed.

You need to set the SSID of your wireless network on your router. At a computer that has a wired connection to the router, access the administration page and change the SSID to something unique (not the default setting). This is usually found under the wireless options page. When you set up the network in Windows, you need to match this SSID when it prompts you for it. Can you take a screenshot of what you're seeing?

CPUs in 2060 Smarter Than Every Human Brain
Zxian replied to ringfinger's topic in General Discussion
<--- That's all I have to say. This here point to consider is the fact that Moore's Law will break down in the next 10-15 years by all guesses and estimates. By the time we hit 2060, chances are our computers will not be based upon silicon. There are many more reasons why silicon is turning out to be a poor choice for the material used in core components (resistance for one -> heat -> bad), but the fact that by the time we hit 30-40 nm cores, the people who make these things start having to deal with quantum effects between the different electrons, which is a very difficult thing to do (do some quantum mechanics if you want to understand this a little better... it's a 4th year physics course at most universities... ). -
Everyone will see your post regardless of capitalizations. Personally I will be much more willing to read a topic titled: [Help] Windows XP - Event log ID 1703 or Firefox - Can't add extensions Chances are... I won't even bother looking at a post with a title of: HELP!!!! FIREFOX NOT WORKING!!!!111!!!!! And this should probably be in the Site & Forum Issues section... not General Discussion. At least you read the rules... that's a good thing. Thank you.

Post in the Monthly screenshots section... not to mention that I can't click to make it bigger...
