how can I automaticly download the latest version of a program
Zxian replied to sjaak23's topic in Application Installs
Go to the website of the program and download it. Then check out the Technology News section for updates. -
@Historic - Thanks for clearing that up... the original guide made it seem like you could do everything at once...

the best reason for Vista, is simply because its up-to-date
Zxian replied to ps24eva's topic in Windows XP
We don't need to wait, the current betas give us a preview of what we're going to see. Albeit with many speed problems (it is beta people) and many features missing.MS privately released a beta last week that has the majority of the cosmetic features enabled again (ex: the Vista Sidebar) and I can't wait to see this new version. Visually, it's going to be the closet to the final look of Vista. Of course expect a ton of 'under the hood' improvements, and Microsoft hasn't even begun their optimization phase where they get rid of all the bottle necks. Anyone who's written code compiled for easy debugging knows this part as well... For example, I've got a program here that has a debug-compiled size of 6,638K, and a "regular" compile size of 400kb. Go figure. I can't wait for Beta 2... B) -

Bloody Norton getting it's hands into everything... -
@xper - You said the favicon is fixed... is it supposed to be like this? That's what I see here this morning... P.S. Didn't know if this should be here or in the "report bugs here" thread. Sorry if it's in the wrong place...

Other way around!!! Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries suffer from the "memory effect" where the performance of the battery degrades if you don't fully discharge the battery. Lithium batteries don't suffer from this effect. Most laptops and electronics today (cell phones, MP3 players, etc) have lithium batteries.

When is winntbbu.dll run during install
Zxian replied to Halfwalker's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
The Winntbbu.dll file is not "run" per se. It's loaded when you see the screen that tells you what's going on during the installation. As for being at the 4th option right away, that's how it's been for me every time that I've installed XP. No problems or strangeness there. As for replacing the boot screen, it's a bit more complicated. I suggest leaving the boot screen alone and using Boot Skin from Stardock instead. It's the one app that I simply would not consider applying UA since there's a lot of potential to end up with an unbootable system. -
That's the indexing service... probably a useless service for most people. To disable it: Start->Run->type in services.msc->Double-click Indexing Service->Set Startup type to Disabled->Click Stop That should do the trick.

Congratulations xper!!! Grattis på fødelsedagen!!!

Well... sorta. A trickle charge is meant for a very low current used to charge the batteries. Since most people want their computers charged right now, the charger will fill up the battery as quickly as possible. If you want to charge your battery faster, buy a higher wattage power supply.

Yeah... it's a pain in the butt... Also goes to show you that I don't use the RunOnceEx creator, like I probably should...

A simple search for "disable XP tour" in the Google box at the top of the forums found this. Search harder next time. 99% of the stuff you want is already on the boards.

I've been messing around with those little 94x15 px images that people use in their sigs and for their websites n stuff...The Sygate pic needs a little bit of work... I don't really like the way the image turned out. Feel free to grab these and use them for yourself! B)

When in doubt, run the big three of AS: Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MS AntiSpyware. To help prevent spyware from returning, use the immunize feature in Spybot as well as SpywareBlaster. Also, check your IE pop-up blocker settings. Tools->Internet Options->Privacy->Pop-up blocker Settings It should be set to Medium by default. If it was at Low without you having set it there, then you've got something malicious on your computer. Set that to high and see if you still have problems.

Ubuntu is a great distro to try out for new users. Installing programs is as easy as apt-get install <package>. Highly recommended for people who want to try things out but aren't quite ready for the full transition yet.

My choices so far: harunaksoy - Link Jay_Stealth - Link Hopefully I'll get some time next week to play with my desktop. My laptop screenshot isn't a big enough change to warrant entering it again. I'll definately be in by the end of the month though...

For XP itself and something that is purely XP's fault, the only thing I can think of is with a friend of mine. On his laptop, any media file that he right-clicks on gives him an explorer crash. His system is completely virus/malware free and he stays on top of Windows Updates. He ended up restoring from the IBM image...

Could we start with step 1? It says 1. Copy the office 2003 to the hard disk (referred from now on as X:\office2003). Does that mean that you simply overwrite any duplicate entries from one CD to the next, so that you have one folder that contains all the files from the 5 CDs? Or do you do each CD one at a time, and then use the standard AIO methods? It's kinda unclear from the original guide. That much I can understand... just making the final product a little fancier. This sounds like customization outside of the guide. I might have a look at this once I get the basics working. If you don't set the cabinet compression to max (i.e. leave the , will the 5CDs optimize? You said that you got everything into 701MB and then 679MB at first (with the second using Project Client). @tCP - Thanks! That makes things a little easier for cleaning up.
