  2. That's all good then. I was just playing devil's advocate. btw... You seem pretty new here. I don't think I welcomed you. I like that one...
  3. Nah... he'd probably be coming from Opera 8. With Firefox Ctrl+N created a new page, unless you had an extention. For Opera 9 and Firefox the default keyboard shortcuts are as follows: Ctrl+N - New Window Ctrl+T - New page/tab In Opera 8 the keyboard shortcuts were: Ctrl+N - New page Ctrl+Alt+N - New window But just follow the instructions as ripken204 suggested. If you can't find the keyboard shortcut that you're looking for, use the search function to search for "n". That should narrow it down for you.
  4. If you did Wales, then you'd have to do Scotland as well.
  5. I've got a "quality" case... Antec 2650. Cost me $85 CAD after taxes. It's got a 350W PSU (Antec), and it's very quiet (I sleep with my computer on about 15 ft from my bed). My temps have gone down by about 5C just from switching to that case. You have quality, and then you have high-end.
  6. fair enough, but it still is a rubbish drive (no offence intended), that'll be holding your whole system back a lot to be honest Well... true. I did get a lot more performance when I bought my new hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 200GB 7200RPM), but that still shouldn't have contributed to the problem at hand. Not to mention that this thread is over 6 months old now...
  7. Ok... but you could be working on Office, or SyncToy, or something completely different than the portion of the kernel in NT5/NT6 that deals with the pagefile. Just saying that you work for Microsoft doesn't mean that you know everything about everything Microsoft... Wouldn't that last point be reason enough to use two pagefiles, one on the system partition, one on the second disk? Windows will easily be able to determine which pagefile to use for maximum performance.
  8. Well... if you'd tell me how you got the size down, I could upload it for ya... I've already fixed it.
  9. w00t w00t!!!! Thanks for the update. Now everyone gets to enjoy!
  10. Hmm... I think I may have found the problem. In the original AR705.msi, there are two shortcuts created. One on the desktop, which refers to the Acrobat Reader executable (AcroRd32.exe), and the other created in the startmenu, whose target is ReaderProgramFiles. On a slightly different topic, I've switched that to be the same as the desktop shortcut (which works just fine), and I'm trying to recompress this into a 7-zip installer. No matter what options I try to use with 7-zip 4.29 the 7z file is always 6,484 KB (with StartX.exe), although the original installer is 6,188 KB. The SFX archive is 6,603 KB. And I can't UPX that either. EDIT - Yup... my AR705_mod.exe (6,603 KB) works. It's just a bit bigger...
  11. Thats for the reason that ringfinger has said. Bah... want a real challenge? Try beating CivII on Deity on a large map. I did that when I was 14.
  12. I've downloaded Vid0's installer, but when I go to run the Acrobat Reader for the first time post install, I get Windows installer trying to install something. Then I get an error that "the feature you are trying to use in on a network resource that is unavailable". I've installed this after the .NET Framework and the Java Runtime Environment, so as far as I understand, I shouldn't have the msvcp71.dll problem. Any ideas? EDIT - Nevermind. Well... sorta. The start menu shortcut gives me the error. The desktop icon doesn't.
  13. I'm trying to figure out what I've actually got here. When I open up Lavalys Everset Home Edition and check under Motherboard->Motherboard, it tells me that my Memory Bus has a Real Clock of 311MHz (DDR), which gives an effective clock of 622MHz. I doubt that this is actually the case since this computer is almost 2 years old. When I check under Motherboard->SPD, it tells me that my 1GB RAM chip has a memory speed of PC2700 (166MHz), which means 333MHz by most standards (I know the double clock counting with DDR, so no need to explain that). When I go to Benchmark, it tells me that my memory is PC2100 DDR SDRAM. ....so what the heck am I running? Is it PC2700 RAM that's running at PC2100 speeds? But then how does that explain the first part bout the memory bus? EDIT - Just checked with CPU-Z. Says 133MHz for the memory bus. So I guess I'm stickin with PC2100 speeds... nuts.
  14. That's a bit of a hard question to answer. 7-zip is freeware and a small installer, but to use Ultra Compression, you need at least 512MB of RAM. I compressed the OpenOffice installer last night, and it used 600MB of RAM (I've got 1GB). The more compression you want, the more RAM you'll need (typically).
  15. @prathapml - I think he was meaning that ZA isn't a "low resource" program. Regarding the level of control - that's the case with most "good" security software. I haven't used ZA in ages, but with Sygate, it's got a decent level of protection off the bat, and you can lock it down really, really tight. Same goes for Kerio. The thing that I really like about Sygate is the fact that it's a no-frills UI. No fancy graphics - no HTML bloat interfaces. Just the menus and buttons that you need to configure everything. With products like Norton and McAfee, you need to dig through 7 layers of menus and options to find some options... People simply assume that a pretty interface means better...
  16. What exactly do you mean that your network "dies"? Just a note... you probably don't want to be ending any task named "svchost", unless it's using 99% of your CPU (in which case it's most likely a virus).

    MicrowinX Poll

I'd say patches for more software support. I know that for what you do, it works, but what if I want to install something else that you don't use? I'm not exactly sure what programs you currently have in MicrowinX, but here are some examples of what I can see as necessary: - Office type program (Open Office maybe?) - E-mail client (Thunderbird probably, since it can be set up to run as standalone) - Basic image editing (GIMP perhaps) - mIRC I'm guessing that a lot of the other software I'm thinking about has a standalone equivalent... Maybe something for MSN Messenger, or Trillian?
  18. You can try looking in the Tips n Tweaks section on how to repair a scratched disc. That might be able to allow to you read the data off the disc, if the corruption comes from a scratch.
  19. Simple answer: No. There is no be-all-and-end-all program that will fix all your programs for you. Do you have any idea how hard that would be to write?!?!? You seem like the kind of guy who likes to mess around with settings a lot (From reading in the Tips n Tweaks section). Use Acronis True image to keep a working copy of your hard drive, and if anything goes wrong, simply restore the image.
  20. It's used for programs to be able to parse and write to XML files. I think that MSXML 3.0 is included in WinXP, but some newer programs need MSXML 4.0 installed (For me, MathCad installs it). Recommendation: If you installed it with a game, leave it.
  21. Really now?? Go and look at the Mersenne Prime Benchmarks and then say that again. If you compare a P4 3.0GHz (to an Athlon64 3000+ (those two are supposed to be "equal" by AMD's standards), the P4 is faster than the 3000+. If you read up on the Intel vs. AMD dual core standoff at Tom's Hardware Guide, it showed that the AMD system had problems shutting down after having been on for a long period of time. I really want a system that I couldn't restart remotely... And how about this article? - Intel's 955X Dual-Core Chipset Better For Business Users Than NVidia's nForce4 Sorry... but people need to get off their bandwagons. I've heard people try to convince me that OpenOffice is just as good and powerful as Microsoft Office, but that's simply not true. There are features in MS Office that simply cannot be replicated in OO. Sure, OO has nice features over MS Office (built in save to PDF, etc), but in the end, for a business product, it just doesn't cut the cheese. Same story goes for AMD living up to Intel. My friend works for a redundant data storage company (we're talking 1.6PB here (1600 TB)- hasn't had any downtime in 5 years), and ALL of their servers are running Intel CPUs. All of them that serve 1.6PB worldwide. Doesn't anyone stop to think about why that might be? (Don't give me the crap about corporate agreements or contracts... It doesn't apply here.)
  22. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, check the transfer mode of your IDE devices in Device Manager under IDE controllers. It should not be PIO mode.
  23. Well... go to the website of the manufacturer of your video card (ATI or nVidia), and download the latest drivers. Then go to Add/Remove Programs. You should have an option there to remove the ATI/nVidia drivers. Uninstall. Reboot. When you've come back to your desktop, check to see if the problem is still there with the default drivers (ignore any options to automatically detect new hardware). If it is present, then it's not your video drivers. Then install the new drivers from wherever you saved the file. Reboot.
  24. You've probably got your keyboard layout set to UK English, or something other than US English (which is what it should be judging from your location). Go to Start->Control Panel (Classic View)->Keyboard->Languages->Details->Default input language Set that to English (United States) - US. Hope that helps!
  25. Have you checked your video drivers? That'd be my first guess.
