That was especially good news. I'm getting a new machine to eventually transfer my Windows 8 license to. Makes me wonder if I want to put my Vista Ultimate x64 installation back on, and run it, until I get my new PC.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
Posted the good news on the DM Vista Forum. Let's see if this brings that forum out of the doldrums. There were some naysayers regarding the ability to continue updating Vista. -
Only KB4014577 did not install (likely because I don't have that .NET revision installed.) However, for the fifteenth month, we have lift off. Yay! Windows 8 updated for May 2017.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
Woohoo! At least we have all of the Security updates. Sounds great! Hmmmm! Maybe I should go back to Vista - just for a short while ...lol -
April showers bring May .... updates. It took awhile for KB4019214 (Security Only for 2012) to appear, but it's now on the Update Catalog. So are the IE 10 update (KB4018271), the Adobe Flash update (KB4020821), and the .NET updates (KB4014577, KB4014589, KB4014586, and KB4014597) for each version. I guess I'll just run the one I need for v4. Ahoy Mateys! Let's install and boot!

Has anyone attempted this today? Just curious. -
Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
So see? Isn't that just as "condescending" to someone who does engage in modern-day social media? But I don't see that statement as trolling. I wholeheartedly disagree with it, but Nomen should have the right to say it. This is precisely what I'm getting at. So why is it any different when I've expressed my views? I think it's an important point to make.- 41 replies

Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
OK so Lone Crusader. Let's be friendly about it then shall we? That are many who are legit experts in the IT field that would not see calling Windows 9x being a "threat" to others online, an arrogant theory. IT experts would fired en masse if they ever recommended it in the business world. How is that arrogant? Just because you don't agree with it? And further more, I did use Windows 98 SE and ME extensively for many years, so I do indeed have authority to speak on it. The system does have its limitations. It's not a stable protected mode memory model. Those aren't lies Lone Crusader. Those are facts. If I really, genuinely thought something was a poor decision to do (as in running Win9x online), why can't that be expressed? If someone new came along and read this thread, I wouldn't want them to just read all good things about Windows 9x in 2017. People should have a fair and balanced view of all sides, including those who disagree with the bulk of the views here. Besides, many of you balk at Windows NT 6x systems. There's one fellow who calls Windows 10 the "terrorist edition". Really? I loathe Windows 10, and even I think that's ridiculous. So come on, everything should be fair game. Strong opinions are not equivalent to trolling. If you're just wanting everything to be all nicey-nicey to Windows 98 users, isn't that equally biased? There's no hate or anger being expressed on my part. Just strong opinion, and that never hurt anyone.- 41 replies

See Guys? I'm not the only one. I was never trolling. If you want to use Win9x to run older local software, go for it. I even use XP as a media jukebox. But I never put it online. And there was never anything wrong with saying so.- 41 replies

Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
That's not being fascist. That's what I (and many others who are WAY MORE informed than me believe). Hey, at any time, we all smoked around each other care free and drove without seat belts. We don't do that anymore. Why? Because we know better and it can affect others. So if I want to belittle Windows 9x because I truly think it's obsolete and dangerous to run online, you won't stop me from saying so. This is a Windows forum for everyone; it's not your private club, so you shouldn't be able to say, "I won't have any of that around here". You don't censor this forum. Good AND Bad should be allowed on this forum when it comes to Windows 9x. Besides, plenty of commentary deriding Windows NT 6x class stuff here, so I'll go right ahead with my opinions about Win9x. Thank you. And now, I will leave it at that.- 41 replies

No it doesn't. Have you actually left your XP cave long enough to try Windows 8 Dibya? It's been flawless and I've ran it for a year and a half now. Stable as anything.- 41 replies

Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I'm not bashing. We're having a discussion, and we're allowed to disagree. My Win9x was very stable thank you very much, but even Windows NT 4x and Windows 200o were WORLD'S BETTER. I see anyone as spouting Win9x as being current and usable (by a 2017 definition) to not be truthful or honest. There are people (like me now) that think no one should run 9x on the Internet because it can be a threat to all of us. So what, I have to keep quiet about that? I don't think so. I will leave it at that though because you're signature graphic says "Windows 9x Diehard", so there's no room to enlighten- 41 replies

Gamepad support was removed from recent builds of Pale Moon. This was decided after a survey which cited the featured was less desired. Could that be the issue? https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15075&p=111545&hilit=survey#p111545

She could have easily clicked on a similar link and infected herself in a Win9x system. Come on now, I remember people infecting their systems all the time in the late 90s and early half of the 2000s.- 41 replies

Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Sorry that seems a bit tin-foil hat-ish to me. For all of the security holes there may be, Windows 9x is basically a house of cards structurally. Security by obscurity first off isn't a strategy in my mind. But running a partially protected mode environment on top of MS-DOS is flimsy. Besides what devices do I no longer have access to in Windows 8? And I'll tell you, Windows 8 runs WAY MORE stable than 9x ever ever did.- 41 replies

I just simply would never use a browser that old for anything mission critical. But then again, I'd say the same for Windows 9x.- 41 replies

See to me, there is ABSOLUTELY NO up to date browser that works on Win9x. By that I mean one that can render HTML5 and do banking. Right there, that should render Win9x as only being appropriate for offline use.

I meant that I would hide the menu and bookmarks bar. I'd prefer: Blank Title Bar - with "V" menu button" Transport buttons (back/forward/refresh/home) and address bar Tab bar In any case, this is a real start.
-
Whooahooh - seems like it. Except then I would hid the menu and Bookmarks Bar. Holy Crap! Jaclaz. Thanks a lot. Time to give it a second try.

Like over on the Windows 8 Forums, it will be interesting to see (in one week we will know for sure) whether security updates and patches from the initial release of Server 2008 will be able to be manually applied to Windows Vista, on an ongoing monthly basis. This would extend "update support" until January 2020. Now I'm not going to spear-head the Vista initiative, but I still think it should happen, and I will be watching very closely. I would think something like this would be top of mind for Vista users (I'm sure they'd both agree ... har har har ) Any takers?

This "lite" version of Windows 10 sounds interesting. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/2/15506378/microsoft-windows-10-s-os-operating-system-announced-features

The same user (towgers) also uploaded a "Classic Notepad" app the other day. Is this any more legit? https://www.xpforums.com/threads/classicos-typewriter-free-word-processor.933074/ It appears this guy needs to be exposed.
-
He has posted a ClassicOS screenshot, but makes you download an executable to view it? No thanks. I'm not falling for any tricks here. https://www.xpforums.com/threads/classicos-screenshot-for-windows-xp-free-tool.933073/#post-3256499 Sheesh! Like why couldn't he post a screenshot right in the thread?
