Is it safe to use Windows 9x on the modern web?
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Sorry that seems a bit tin-foil hat-ish to me. For all of the security holes there may be, Windows 9x is basically a house of cards structurally. Security by obscurity first off isn't a strategy in my mind. But running a partially protected mode environment on top of MS-DOS is flimsy. Besides what devices do I no longer have access to in Windows 8? And I'll tell you, Windows 8 runs WAY MORE stable than 9x ever ever did.- 41 replies

I just simply would never use a browser that old for anything mission critical. But then again, I'd say the same for Windows 9x.- 41 replies

See to me, there is ABSOLUTELY NO up to date browser that works on Win9x. By that I mean one that can render HTML5 and do banking. Right there, that should render Win9x as only being appropriate for offline use.

I meant that I would hide the menu and bookmarks bar. I'd prefer: Blank Title Bar - with "V" menu button" Transport buttons (back/forward/refresh/home) and address bar Tab bar In any case, this is a real start.

Whooahooh - seems like it. Except then I would hid the menu and Bookmarks Bar. Holy Crap! Jaclaz. Thanks a lot. Time to give it a second try.

Like over on the Windows 8 Forums, it will be interesting to see (in one week we will know for sure) whether security updates and patches from the initial release of Server 2008 will be able to be manually applied to Windows Vista, on an ongoing monthly basis. This would extend "update support" until January 2020. Now I'm not going to spear-head the Vista initiative, but I still think it should happen, and I will be watching very closely. I would think something like this would be top of mind for Vista users (I'm sure they'd both agree ... har har har ) Any takers?

This "lite" version of Windows 10 sounds interesting. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/2/15506378/microsoft-windows-10-s-os-operating-system-announced-features

The same user (towgers) also uploaded a "Classic Notepad" app the other day. Is this any more legit? https://www.xpforums.com/threads/classicos-typewriter-free-word-processor.933074/ It appears this guy needs to be exposed.
-
He has posted a ClassicOS screenshot, but makes you download an executable to view it? No thanks. I'm not falling for any tricks here. https://www.xpforums.com/threads/classicos-screenshot-for-windows-xp-free-tool.933073/#post-3256499 Sheesh! Like why couldn't he post a screenshot right in the thread?

Just resurrecting this thread as it appears to be the only Vivaldi-related thread. Just wondering if you folks might suggest two things on Vivaldi v1.9: Is there anyway to change the transport buttons on the address bar? (back-forward-refresh-home). I'd love a theme extension or something that could do that. -AND- Can the tab bar be placed under the address bar in ANY way?

Well I think he intends to be "for real". Perhaps he's feeling out the level of interest first.
-
Well I've started to be doubtful. A Facebook Page? And no download link?
-
We'll see if this has any worth to it, or if it's a lot of hot air. I'd be hopeful that an opportunity for an XP-like secure, modern OS could be reality. .https://www.xpforums.com/threads/classicos-announcement.933062/#post-3256367

MSE For Vista Now Shows XP Nag Screens
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
So can the release of MS just before these nags still be used on Vista (similar to v4.4.304 on XP)? -
Also, there seems not yet to be any .NET downloads in the Microsoft Update Catalog, though I understand that there should be some from the announcements.

OK so April 2017's updates have been installed for the most part. I installed the Security Only (KB4015548) and the Flash Update (KB4018483). I've sourced an Internet Explorer 10 update (KB4014661) but it's a cumulative update. Are there no security-only styled monthly updates for Internet Explorer?

I thought this was confirmed:

I think they already install manually just fine. The only thing that doesn't work is Powershell, and some 2008-specific updates. That's what I understood.

SeaMonkey Setting for Icons and Text
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Software Hangout
Although, this only provides text only, text and icons, or icons. Darn I'll have to try a portable SeaMonkey and see what text on the side is. -
SeaMonkey Setting for Icons and Text
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Software Hangout
ooooooh a pref you've listed. I wonder if that works in Pale Moon. I'll try it when I get home from work. Thanks for the tip. -
Hi folks: If anyone is running SeaMonkey, can you check the menus and tell me what is the name of the setting that allows small icons with text displayed on the side (like Opera used to be). I want to see if there's a setting or other method of implementing this on Pale Moon. I'm not getting any response there yet.
