Mstask.dll belongs to Task Scheduler, presumably something to do with McAfee too.

"Won't boot" is a bit vague. Where did it stop booting? And how did you do SR?
-
Do a chkdsk first before rushing out to buy Windows. Does your PC not come with a restore CD or partition? McUpdate belongs to McAfee Internet Security. Is McAfee working? If not can you reinstall it? Don't know about AOL file as I can't see the long filename. Desk.cpl is the CP applet for desktop properties. I don't know what the three have in common.

"Pre Ban Hotfixes" from your XPUa CD
Takeshi replied to SilverBulletUK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Thanks. Yep, they're log files. As far as I can tell, KB905474 (WGA Notification) does not create an uninstall folder, nor a log, just an entry in Add/Remove Prog (registry). -
The poster's iso was >2GB so we can assume it's a DVD image. If Nero refuses to burn a CD iso to DVD, what would be your workaround?

[help] How to shut down system from dos with countdown
Takeshi replied to Nepali's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Would you or anyone else care to explain what does ~tmp.exe do? -
The original question is too vague. A non-bootable system may be due to a simple error that can easily be fixed by the RC, or a bootable system may have serious errors that are hard to fix. ERD Commander is a variant of WinPE. He's really asking what apps to put inside a BartPE, UBCD or the likes. I'm not aware of any apps that will do "auto-registry repairs, and crash/file-dump analyzing". But one BartPE that I've seen includes (not exhaustive list): ERD Commander 7 tools Partition Manager McAfee AV McAfee Stinger Ghost 8 Disk Commander Easy Recovery Pro Final Data

The BGInfo webpage says you can put it in your Startup folder. Since you've now asked the same qu in that forum hopefully someone there will know.

I suspect you applied the autologon reg tweak and then changed your pw without updating the registry entry. So logically, you should check the relevant registry entries. Or go to control userpasswords2 (this is the preferred method since it doesn't involve editing the reg manually and it doesn't write the pw to that key anymore).
-
I notice: there should be a line separating the two: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] and "software" is normally in caps. I don't know about the syntax of BGInfo. Just make sure the reg file format is absolutely correct first.

This thread gives you some idea what a manufacturer specific OEM CD is all about. And have a look at other old posts on DELL, OEM etc.

Is there some monitoring application that removes startup registry entries automatically, or some Group Policy (if the PC is joined to a domain) that restricts startup entries? And does it work if you put it in HKCU registry hive instead?
-
Perhaps some monitoring app or GP in action?

It looks like the Repair option you chose launched the Recovery Console. This would not do a repair installation. This is a common mistake. In a normal MS Setup CD, the option to reinstall Windows is found after you go to Setup and accepted the EULA. There, you have a choice of deleting the existing Windows installation or install on top of it. I don't know if the same is true for your recovery CD. But if you have a spare partition to install Windows to, then it seems the safest option. The other option is to connect your HD to another PC as slave and access your data from there. EDIT: It's never a good idea to put your data in the same partition as Windows and it's always good idea to have regular backups.

With due respect, everyone's requirements are not necessarily identical. Your scenario of running a video server and streaming video is not necessarily the same as that of the original poster or myself, who records TV only occasionally. All we can do is make an informed choice. The poster has captured analogue video (presumably of lowish resolution) to mepg already, and only 2.5GB, not a large uncompressed AVI, so re-encoding down to 700MB would save 1.7GB. Yes it's a saving in HD space but I wouldn't do it myself for all it's worth. I don't download ripped DVDs so I can't comment on their qualities after re-encoding.

The difference in frames is well known and can be dealt with in all conversion programs. In commercial films in which the source is 24fps, converting to PAL and NTSC DVDs both would involve adding extra frames. PAL films often end up slightly longer (or is it shorter, fitting 24 frames to 25) in duration than NTSC.

"Pre Ban Hotfixes" from your XPUa CD
Takeshi replied to SilverBulletUK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I have a few queries if you don't mind please. 1. In the ini: We put KB123456, not KB123456.exe, right? 2. I see you're creating pseudo entries in the registry and making dummy files & folders to fool WU. Is the registry entry enough? 3. Does it work for WGA Notification? -
I'm not familiar with the newer codecs and formats but the correct approach would be to decide on the codec and format first, then decide on the program. The prog is just a tool to do a particular job. It's like when you want to make a text document, you decide which format first, be it txt, doc or pdf, then on which program: Notepad, Word or Acrobat. Video encoding is a huge subject and we're spoilt with too many choices. My own view on TV or VHS capture is, you already spend time doing real time capturing the video on HD. Avoid re-encoding if possible. HDs are cheap nowadays.

Wifi connected but no internet..(TCP/IP Prob)
Takeshi replied to uk_flipside's topic in Networks and the Internet
The way I see it is, if hardwiring works, then there's nothing innately wrong with the TCP/IP in Windows. I'm inclined to think it's hardware (not necessarily the card, but MoBo/PC slot etc) related. -
And did you include product key in sysprep.inf?

It should still have warranty. PS. The forum likes a more meaningful title than:

Which Registry change controls the 'All Programs' list?
Takeshi replied to GLO's topic in Windows XP
If I read it correctly, it's not an unattended install, but you want to make the changes manually afterwards? It'd make things easier if you list the ones you know and those you don't. -
Yep, think I get it now. Thanks Home movie → UVS9 → 8.5GB → DVD Shrink burn directly Verbatim DVD DL out of stock today...
