  1. There's no ERD in WinXP, only Win2k. There's no ASR in WinXP HE, only XP Pro. Most people don't bother with ASR, but use an image for quick recovery. ASR saves something to a floppy but you need to run ntbackup first. You can still try the Use Last Good Config before doing anything else. EDIT: for typos.
  2. Windows Update and MU might have changed since the guide was last written. You can search Windows Update Catalog under Use administrator options.
  3. OK, looking at ref.chm again, repartition can be used in CD (under [unattended]) and RIS (when it's under [RemoteInstall]). When Repartition is used, then Autopartition is redundant, I think. When both are included, you never know for sure if both are actually applied or one is ignored. The only way to find out is to use a systematic approach, use one at a time and then both and see.
  4. winnt.sif Or: 0411:E0010411 for Japanese Input System: MS-IME 2002
  5. There's been a certain amount of confusion in the use of these two words. People have used them interchangeably sometimes. You can argue about the semantics but at the end of the day MS has not always been the most consistent or the most accurate in the use of language. Both SPs and hotfixes have the /integrate switch and no /slipstream switch. The issue of using /integrate in svcpack has been discussed in another thread. To add to the confusion, or perhaps it clarifies it, MS uses slipstream when talking about hotfixes and integration when talking about SPs, as in KB290074.
  6. That's a bit odd: I also have UnattendSwitch=Yes but didn't have Owner created. Have a look at your nLite settings. If nLite is not to blame, you can try putting net user Owner /delete in the useraccounts.cmd.
  7. You need to reinstall the HP specific drivers. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...ng=en&cc=us
  8. Re-download the set of drivers from Intel: http://www.intel.com/support/network/adapt...ex.htm#PRO/1000
  9. Your BT driver could be the culprit.
  10. The d/l page comes up as the first item when I use Google search with this filename.
  11. Thanks for the info. I don't quite understand this bit: the "IN" is not needed? For myself, I have in mind running a 2nd CD or DVD from my 2nd DVD drive since I have two DVD drives.
  12. Maybe I miss something. The message you posted clearly stated: You can still try running it from the Recovery Console with the proper switches.
  13. You've mentioned two things: files/folder permissions and software restrictions policy. They're not the same in Windows. For file/folder permissions - NTFS and sharing, any good MCSE book will have plenty of info. For software restrictions policy, read this first.
  14. You said you had Windows in the 1st partition, Data on the 2nd partition before you started. I'm not clear what the current situation is, whether you did in fact install Windows on the Data partition too. Anyway, you can use PM or Acronis Partition Manager to hide the second partition.
  15. Your data partition has not been physically moved, just it's drive letter has changed. That's easy to change later. Leaving aside what causes this, a workaround is to hide the data partition first. Then during install XP Setup won't see it and won't assign it C. In addition you can delete the XP partition first; then you'll have an unformatted space to go ahead.
  16. Save the webpage with that gif on your local HD and open it with your browser and see.
  17. UnattendSwitch is correct, NOT: UnattendedSwitch I know it's confusing and you'd think unattendedswitch is correct. I put it down to Americanism. Repartition is only applicable in network and RIS installs. You can leave it but it's just irrelevant. AutoLogon = Yes It's autologon not autologin, as least so it says in my ref.chm. You cannot use autologon with encrypted pw.
  18. It's never occurred to me. How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows But I won't recommend it unless you're confident in editing the registry. It'd be best to reinstall in the correct partition. I'm unclear what happened. During installation, the first partition available in the HD usually appears first on top of the partition list, it doesn't matter what drive letter it has. It's also possible to install XP in primary and extended partitions so I doubt if that is the cause of your problem. It's just conceivable that your MBR or partition table has some errors. But then as I understand, the PT doesn't need to list the partitions in exact order.
  19. Post your BSOD message. It usually means some hardware error.
  20. I repeat, many files are compressed and have entirely obscure names in the CD. Mine doesn't have dvdplay.exe either. These files are copied and extracted during installation. So your problem appears to be reading the CD or copying error. There's nothing wrong the the hologram CD. Try another CDROM drive to install.
  21. You don't need to use the manufacturer's util if: 1. BIOS supports large disk. My over four year old BIOS supports it so it's very unlikely any new BIOS doesn't. If your BIOS doesn't and can't be upgraded then it's no good. 2. Windows XP has SP1 at least. You can only format >32GB partitions using NTFS in WinXP. Provided the above conditions are true, you can partition and format the HD during XP installation.
  22. There's a webpage to check if the product key is genuine but it won't tell you about what hardware is tied up with. For factory PCs and laptops, there're usually the COA stickers to show you about the keys. For genuine retail versions, the keys are not tied to any machine so there shouldn't be problems with reactivation.
  23. You have to say whether the CD is original MS hologram CD or one you burned, because files can't be missing in the hologram CD and burned CDs can pose probems. Also, files are compressed in the CD so they might not have the same names. File copying errors can also occur when RAM is insufficient/faulty or CDROM read problem.
  24. 1. You can't encrypt a blank Admin password. 2. UnattendSwitch = "Yes" 3. Repartition=Yes is not needed for CD install.
